Title: What about gaining weight?
Post by: dreamyxo on August 09, 2016, 08:40:16 pm
Everyone talks about the struggle of losing weight but for some of us the struggle is gaining weight.  I've been thin all my life.  Even as I get older they say your metabolism is supposed to slow down well I'm still waiting and it hasn't happened yet.  Anyone else feel my pain?

No.  I only could dream of such pain :)
I would think you could just eat ice-cream & drink shakes and the weight would just come on.  Not  healthy way to gain, but a delicious one.

I know that having your problem CAN be just as bad as having too much weight and not being able to lose it. But a lot more people have the latter problem than the former, so I bet it's hard for you to share your discomfort with others like you. I myself have the opposite problem like so many others.

I have dealt with weight gain on behalf of my daughter while she was going through adolescents.  She developed anorexia.  The process of her gaining weight was physically, emotionally and even spiritually hard for her.  It was hard for me to watch...but she had to go through an intense program to kick the eating disorders butt.  I pray she keep control of ED (eating disorder) and it doesn't control her through the rest of her life.  She's 18 now.  Out of my hands so to speak.

My personal opinion is "all genetics". Love your body: Fat or thin. Then, start working from there. And, improve your overall health.

As an analyst and underwriter, in the grand old world of finance, I am always looking for greater efficiencies. One area that most people overlook, including myself, is the extreme cost linked to being overweight. Health costs go up as the need to visit the doctor increases. Missing work tends to increase with poor health and sickness. Food costs are generally higher. People tend to buy more junk in order to compensate for what they have or don't have. For instance, buying new clothes to cloak the extra weight. Drink more because they are not happy with their weight. Less depression seems to shroud those who are exercising more frequently. I am aiming for working out at least thirty minutes a day for the next thirty days and minimizing my food intake.

I had a friend so skinny, FYI = you can have high cholesterol when skinny too, so be careful on how to keep up your weight

I personally don't know the struggle but I know people that do. I usually see it more with older people that need to gain weight. Have you tried drinking your calories with supplements like protein shake and Boost?

My sister has a naturally fast metabolism and was very underweight (about 20-25 pounds so). Her doctors put her on something called Remeron. It increases your appetite. She got to being just at a healthy weight but then lost a little more due to stress. Stick with pasta, French bread, protein shakes and ice cream. To gain, you have to commit to eating about every 2 or 3 hours, and eat before bed. You can do it!  I had to gain when I got out of the hospital this year (89 pounds at my lowest) and it took 8 months, but I was able to get at least close to a good weight for my height. Good luck! I don't know about you, but I felt weaker and more sluggish being so thin. Now that I'm eating quite a bit, I'm able to do much more.   :star:

I tried those drinks a few times but not regularly they have way to much sugar and too many ingredients for my liking.

Gaining weight is hard for me since my metabolism is pretty high. Sometimes I think I got a good metabolism and then when it stops or slows down I will become overweight. The only concern is my cholesterol, which I got better from the cardio bike.

I'm trying to bulk up so I can turn it to muscle mass.. Having toothpick arms is unsightly and recently I am showing good results with all the weight lifting

I am sorry to laugh, I know it is a real problem, I just wish I could have for a while.  It is funny but to gain or to lose weight you need to eat several small meals a day, just different caloric intake.

Can I have your metabolism? I'd gladly trade.  :)

I was 135 lb. from high school and all my adult life until I turned 50. Then I gained 15 lb. due to my disability.  In the last 2 weeks alone, I gained another 2 lb. (I hope the doc's scale was off on that one!)

Growing up I was quite small. Enough so that my mother worried about my growth and kept worrying as I became a teenager. I graduated high school at about 98 lbs. The most I've weighed in my adult life was 135. Now at 41, metabolism slowed, stress eating has become a real thing and I weigh 170. I'm 5'10" so I'm not over weight imo, but would like to lose the small gut that I have somehow gotten during the past year. So to some extent I've been on both sides of the scale. Wanting to gain weight but wanting lean muscle rather than just pounds and now wanting to lose some fat but gain some muscle. Some are just born with the inability to look the way they would like. A lot of it is genetics and putting forth the effort. No matter how you want to lean on the scale towards more or lower, the real goal should be to reach a healthy status then worry about the physical asthetics. My personal focus is on cardio. I think this will help lose weight in the problem areas and then I can focus on strength training in addition to the cardio.

Sometimes I wish I could "feel your pain".  Sadly my pain is just the opposite especially now that I've gotten "older" - it's become twice as hard to lose even 5 lbs.!!

Had that problem when I had my kids and I was breastfeeding them... was loosing way too much (scary!)

Are you eating correctly? Try to eat enough red meat, past, bread... and potatoes!

But as long as you are healthy, don't worry too much about it!

Yeah, it seems like a misconception is that skinny people can eat whatever, whenever they want but I know that sometimes they have different issues to deal with.

My very skinny friend is able to eat a lot an not gain weight; however, she has migraines that I'd never want to deal with.

I have extra weight but, for the most part - I am fairly healthy.
