Be upfront about it and say "Look, you're a great friend. (Even though they may not be. xD) But, I'm not really interested in you. I'm flattered however I don't think that it would really work out."
May be a bit awkward to say but it will get your message out. That should be the most important thing. :D

I don't like you. Sounds harsh, but not as harsh as a person you just confessed to avoid you. Scenario: You liked someone and finally gathered the courage to confess. After your confession the person runs away from you every time they see you or has an expression that tells them they're no longer wanted or that they are an idiot for confessing at all.

I'm not even clear on what kind of "like" you mean. You mean a friend of a friend that thinks you're a friend too?
The annoying person at work that keeps trying to talk to you even though you're clearly not interested.
The person pursuing you romantically, that you may even like as a person, but not romantically?
I have no idea what your problem even is, and an answer is impossible with this amount of info.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing. It really depends on the person/situation. Perhaps the OP could provide some general details? You have to ask the right question with more detail provided to get more meaningful opinions.

Plain and simple you say im sorry but I really do not like you.
If your not good in that situation I agree that you should just avoid them, they are bound to take the hint and leave you alone.

I guess the OP must have solved the problem by now. Perhaps someones advice did help, but we never really knew what kind of like the person meant?

It depends on whether they told you straight out that they like you. If they have, then you can try easing them in like saying that, "You know, you're a great person and all. But, I don't think that things will work out between us. It's not that I don't like you or anything, we can still be friends." Then, there might be some awkward silence from then on. OR if they haven't told you that they like you, just pretend that you never knew.

You don't. Just avoid them, don't flirt, don't laugh at their jokes, and they'll eventually get the picture. Don't be too obvious about it; don't be rude, just boring. But there are always people that just won't give up. As a last resort, you could ask a friend to tell them for you. Have them just hint at it. DON'T have them say "hey, samantha, fred told me to tell you that he doesn't like you." And pick someone that is good friends with the person; someone that the person trusts. Another thing you could do is make up an excuse. My excuse that I use often is "I don't date younger girls", which is partly true. Another thing you can do is talk constantly about other girls (or guys) when she's (or he's) around you. Just be like "Wow, that girl (or guy) over there is hot" or "I miss (either your ex or your crush's name goes here)"

If its a (old) friend yeah the only thing you CAN do for them to get the hint and you usually never want to talk to them again is to avoid them completely. Make sure things are noticable and they will get the idea. But if its like a relationship kinda thing. I personally have learned that the other person is the one that has to change, so you have to do and say things to make them not like you. I always try to make people my friend first now before i go into the whole relationship kinda deal, because if things dont work out at least we can be friends and still talk, at least we still "like" each other. But sadly even for me, a boy, occasionally i get the girl whos just straight up OBSESSED with me before they even know who i am, and i HATE IT. It makes things sooooooo hard, i cant think about anything other than, "why are they looking at me, what are they thinking, oh god what do i do" in that case i rarely say anything to them, dont make eye contact, kinda just lean them away. Yeah it is "mean" but its alot better than just straight up ignoring. I hope this helped even a little. And goodluck.
Another thing, people just dont get it. Its like, oh yeah i think that persons hot, they think im hot, okay now they do it. Thats just jumping to the end of the relationship in all honesty, so if you feel like being used just keep on doing your skipping steps instead of just regularly talking to them. Have a slight ego comon now people, quit being so easy and out there im sick and tired of it.... and im only 19. Its pathetic...

i dont think you should tell them just stop hanging around them so much they will figure it out sooner or later

Depending on what situation is whether it is friendly or an annoying co-worker or some STALKER! most the time if you tell them go away YOU avoid HAVING TO GO TO COURT!
