its all about advertising! not that i've ever sold avon,
but if i did, i'd put lots of effort into advertising and
networking...

you should print up business cards. some sites offer
them for free, or you could buy your labels and make
them yourself. tons of restaurants, coffee shops, and
grocery stores have cork boards in their foyers (just
glance around next time you're in one) ... and they're
open to the public to pin up flyers &business cards.

get your family involved. round up mom, grandma,
the aunts and have them tell their friends and hand
out your business cards too.

think about it -- if you scattered about 100 of them
around town, what are the chances of someone
getting in touch? i'd say they're pretty good

How much are the start up fees?  I saw and ad the other day and thought of doing it for a brief second depending on the fees.  What are you doing to get customers?  A month is not a long time to try anything.  A lot of businesses don't see a profit for a year or more and it's only one month and just because you thought you'd be raking in the dough you want to give up?   If you want to be successful in a business you can't have the attitude you have.

I am in the same boat! I have been selling Avon for 5 months now and it is costing me more than I make. I have been following the rule of three, passing out brochires and samples, etc. So far the only sales I have gotten were from my mother! I even have some people that asked my advice, took books and samples, then ordered from another rep....that really hurt since they have been long time friends of mine and ordered from the lady at the gas station! I think the economy has had a major impact on avon and like industries. I am going to wait it out through the holiday season, if it does not pick up I am finished, I cannot afford to keep paying out my hard earned money and wasting my time. I wish you all the luck and sucess!

Actually make up sales do well in a bad economy.  It's fairly cheap and people want to feel better about themselves in bad times.  It's called the lipstick index. (http://www.newsweek.com/id/194906)

I think you should keep at it, through the hoildays, Avon usually has unique one
of a kind of items that are great gifts.  I use to sell Avon, and has been thinking
about getting back in it.  I made a lot of new friends and enjoy meeting new people.
Sales can be hard, if you put to much pressure on the money part.  If people
see you are enjoying what you are doing, they will buy from you.   Sales is a
numbers game, 20 people for 1 yes.

Yes, I would agree that sales would be suffering because of this poor economy.  Thanks for providing the link to the article.  I liked reading it.  Actually, the end of the "lipstick index" article says entirely the opposite, that make up sales are NOT doing well in the current economy.  The bad economy is making things like lipstick more of a luxury item.  People are just spending less and less on "Avon" type personal care and gift/home decor items these days.

To the OP: A month is really not that long to give it a shot and you may not want to give up too easily.  But then on the other hand, I am not sure how how hard you are working or actually spending to make your Avon business grow, but sooner or later you just have to cut your losses and move on.  It is hard to say without more details.  There is a lot  of competition for these types of products and not even just with Avon.  Good luck.  If this does not work, something else will!

The bottom line is do you like it for yourself? If you are just doing it to make money, get out. My wife does Stampin' Up as a demonstrator because she loves doing it and wanted to support her habit. Now she makes enough to attend convention every year and pay for all her own stuff. I built here a workroom in the basement where she has all her workshops and it makes her happy. That's a good business, even if it doesn't make money.

I am hardly a sales person, but try to drop off some catalogs at offices with break rooms.  Every office I ever worked in had an Avon lady.  It was contagious, once one person bought everyone seemed to decide they needed something too.  On the day it was delivered everyone loved to compare purchases.

I have never looked at Avon's pay plan, but usually you need to get some referrals to make any money...then if everyone does a little bit, everyone makes money.,  The hard thing is to find serious people out there

And I agree, a few months isn't enough time.

I say keep trying.  You just need better advertising.  Try fliers and posting on websites.

Don't give up!! Have you ever tried to take the little books to gas stations? The lady I buy Avon through leaves them at local gas stations. She also has told me she leaves some on benches at Wal-Mart, Walgreens and other local shopping locations throughout our town. She does little specials of her own. Gives out lots of samples to those who buy from her. And she even delivers products to those who cannot come pick them up.
Also I know with the Mark line Avon has that targets mostly younger adults. I would take some of those to a local College if you have one.
Have your friends, husband and family members take some books to their work place. Its really all about getting your name out there with the Avon books.
GOOD LUCK!!!

It's very hard to sell stuff now a days. Use the internet if you can as apposed to selling face to face. Most people shop online now a days. It is possible to make money being an avon lady but it's not easy.

avon is a good way to make extra money only if you have good customers. i used to sell avon but gave up on it because i was putting more money into it than i was making. it gets tough espacially when people order alot from you and then when the order comes to you they decide they dont want the order. then you have to ship everything back and pay the shipping cost on it plus you lose the money you just made on the orders. also on your first 4 campaigns you make 50% of every order but after your 4th campaign you are on commision and in order to make 50% then you have to sell over 1500 dollars a campaign. you can look at that on your avon website. thats why i gave up on it. it just wasnt worth the time of doing it plus i didnt have all the money to put into it everytime someone cancelled or ordering books when no customers is around to place orders.

I used to sell Avon [probably going to get back in to it soon]. Here's a couple of ideas :

Use your online Avon site. It's free for a bit, then a few bucks a month but it will help a lot.

Promote your website in your emails by putting the link in your signature.

Many areas have local free classifieds online. Find a popular one for your area and make an ad stating that you sell Avon. Include your phone number if they want books and your website link if they'd rather shop online.

Write your name and number on the back of Avon books. Take a few to local hot spots that will allow you to leave them on the counter. I had gained approximately 20 customers who ordered out of each new book from just leaving them at a library. Not including other places.

If you let me know what product you are looking for, I would be glad to look at my website to see if it is available for you. Every now and again products are backlogged and are temporarily removed form the brochures until current orders can be fulfilled. . I could then assist you in how you could go about purchasing it. Sometimes all products are not available in all areas, but we can burn that bridge if we get there.

I've been selling for 4+ month and i've made steady income. It's all about being ambitious and going the extra mile to earn the money you deserve. It's all about investing the right amount in brochures and spending extra time to inform people about your business. It does not happen over night. Also do you know others that would like to sell? Have you asked your sales manager about the leadership program? Do you have the proper tools? Business cards? Are you enrolled as an Erep?

I know what your going thru with Avon.  I only buy from Avon for the majority of my makeup.  I love it and some of the clothes I buy.  But my lady is having a hard time making it and keeping her website up.  She has done this for over 20 years but I do buy less and less now since times are rough.

It is not easy, many say the money comes from the referals, cuz it is hard to sell,. my grandmother sold back in the day, and she lived off of it, but that is when most women stayed at home, and spent their husbands money, now adays, women will drive and get what they want.

If there was some way that FC members could make contact through email then she could email you her Avon website address and you all could order from her there.

What about the Facebook?? She could list her Avon website there and you or anyone could contact her there.

My wife has been selling Avon for over four years.  She doesn't have a lot of customers but she has steady customers.
If you're expecting to make a lot of money from Avon within a short period of time , that simply will not happen.  As with any business online or off, if you want to grow it, you need time and patience, and effort, a lot of effort.
Now, if you're  looking to make some decent pocket change on a daily basis that you can grow and perhaps use to invest in your Avon business, that can be done too without ever spending a dime.

I like for women to wear lipstick and makeup when I get to see them! Good economy or not.
