Really sad that so many ppl take that route. I know and have known many unfortunately and some have died from it(alcohol,cigarettes,needles...) and they are all so hard to help because they either don't want it or won't help themselves. Life is good but nobody says it's all perfect but you have to do what's right and put in the effort or well you better pray that death is better. Can't imagine anything that is basically suicide as having a good afterwards for those who do it and don't need to do it,those who cause their own problems or don't fight the best they can.

Yes I have a friend who is an alchoholic. Actually, I was a friend of his for many years until I couldn't stand to watch him go into decline any more and I dissolved the friendship. His wife threatens to leave him like every two seconds, one of his kids has also become an abuser and has been arrested for it at a very young age, and his whole life seems to have gone downhill in general.

We had a friend who was an alcoholic but he didn't die from cirrhosis like some do. He died from lung cancer.
My son went through the marijuana drugs back when he was a young teen (started at 13 through 20) but weaned himself off as a young adult and no longer uses. I'm so glad about that and so proud of him. He turned into a good father and husband. I'm so glad he never went onto anything stronger.
But my only granddaughter was addicted to the hard drugs until she was arrested. The courts put her in a program and apparently, she was doing well. i haven't seen her since she was arrested. Last I knew, she was celebrating 6 months clean. (I really don't know here. Her mom broke it off with my other son when she was 6 months old.) I have another ex-step-granddaughter who had a major illness when she was a young teen and didn't expect her to live. They put her on pain killers, opioids and morphine for a year (6 months hospitalized) and turned to other drugs and alcohol when she could no longer get pain killers. She was arrested twice for DUI and for drug "paraphernalia," but since she is now my ex-step granddaughter, I have no idea how she is doing.

I have a sister, three years younger than me, who chose to take alarming amounts of pain killers prescribed/obtained illegally from several sources. These would put her into a heavy sleep for over twenty hours a day and she did this for thirteen years of her daughter's life. Her husband, an absolute gem, enabled her to do continue this route as he worked 16 hours a day/seven days a week, took their daughter to and from school, made all of the meals, helped their daughter study-while mom slept. Real doctors said there was nothing wrong with her. When I intervened and cut off all prescription sources she turned to alcohol abuse for two years until one night she passed out, hit her head on a table and had to takke a flight for life helicopter to save her. She suffered brain damage from this incident and now minimizes her substance intake.

Not to sure about that. I have seen too many with the opiod overdoses going on.

Yes I know a couple people that are alcoholics. No matter how much people have talked to them about it they won't listen and even try to stop or even slow down.

I know one guy that drinks a lot. He really hit the bottle 10 years ago when his wife died and has just gone downhill every since. He does not remember a thing after his binges.

I have had so many in my family that were addicts. It really is sad because they aren't just hurting themselves, it's almost worse on the family than the addict.

I completely agree with your thoughts and concerns. But I have known a lot more people who died from their diet than those who died from substance abuse. Granted the substances do effect their health and I don't want to diminish that, but I think it takes attention away from the rest of peoples diet that is killing them.

Self destructives - definitely, there are so many people with that personality. Substance abusers, only a few. It is when the two combine that you really have a problem.

I do not know anyone personally. But I have seen people who used substance abuse on local TV news.

yeah...my mother was addicted to the hard stuff..kept her in trouble a lot spent some time in jail...a brother who is an alcoholic,another brother who uses drugs...my grandmother was an alcoholic..seems a lot of them on mothers side were alcoholics...a brother in law who is a preacher got addicted to hard drugs..me i stay away from it all..i have seen what it can do..and i want no part of it..

Yeah, had a friend who abused alcohol. Luckily he has been doing better since he got help

Sure I've known people who abuse alcohol and drugs and sex. It's useless to try and help them because they can't help themselves.
They have to see the light and do it themselves because there's no way else to stop them. :dontknow: What a pity.

A friend of mine was into heroin back in the mid 90's he gave himself a hot dose less than a decade later. America's drug epidemic isn't new and he was from a good family lived in a nice house(bit cold temp wise) but I saw no reason why he should have been doing that. Shame his family had to find him like that. Shame he didn't want help " It's my life".

I know one that is not a friend anymore due to abuse and one current one which is still a friend but ........ Yeah you know like that right now and its really messing with other people around him, Wanna help him but he refuse help and laughs it off.

I have a best friend who’s husband was an alcoholic for years, he would go into rehab come out sober for a few months and it would start again. Sadly he finally died, he was drunk, missed the top step and fell down the basement steps and broke his neck. I have a niece who is into sex, most anyone anytime. That breaks our heart watching her, but no matter what we say or do, she comes back with “shut up, I’m 24 can do what the fxxk I want”. I know she will probably end up killed or getting AIDS but we still worry and love her.

Fortunately I have not know of any of my friends becoming self destructive. Suicide is a sin and I pray that none of my friends ever consider it. :angel11:

There is so much to say on this. I did my time in a bottle. And am clean for 8 years. I only drank but see what opioids do when I go to meetings. It took 20 years to get to where it was affecting my life. Opioid users get to that point in days. Anyone who prescribes Opioids and know their patient is abusing it should have there money taken away to put into rehab facilities. It takes years to get them off of them.

I have a brother and sister in law that are alcoholics. It really is a shame because both are talented people. My brother is great with small engines and could probably have his own business. My sister in law is a talented artist. Sad to see that talent wasted. :(

Most of the kids I went to school with wound up on drugs and destroyed their lives. A lot of the people who I knew after I was out did the same and now I know someone who self destructs in other ways. It just seems like they are the only people who I have ever been around. :BangHead: ??? ???

I knew a woman that did that(used the money to buy cigarettes and wasn't in good shape because of smoking for years.Saw her late in the summer 2017 and an ambulance was taking her away because she was having breathing issues. The paramedics knew her and her son by first names,so it's obvious she's a frequent guest of hospitals in my area.Last I saw her she was in a wheelchair outside of a Quik Chek doing the same bs begging for cigarette money. I have no sympathy for her or her type.

I guess myself, I smoke and drink. push the limits of abuse at times I guess. But I am ok with it.

I do and I am happy to say they no long use drugs with the help of the Lord. Now I just need them to quit smoking cigarette in the name of the Lord, QUIT!

I knew an old woman who was down and out but would spend hours every single day outside Quik Chek and other stores on the avenue begging foe money and she used it to buy cigarettes. Late summer I saw her being taken away in an ambulance because she has hardcore breathing issues due to years of smoking,when she got out she was in a wheelchair doing the same thing. You don't need "the Lord "to help you but you need to help yourself and "God helps those who help themselves". No sane person wants cancer or to die from suffocating yet ppl smoke and those are 2 of the big possibilities.

Every one does. They may not know the person is using drugs. The problem is worse than most any one wants to admit.

I knew someone and it is very sad to see. No one can help them unless they want to get help themselves. Substance abuse does not just affect the individual, but family and friends as well.

My mom has been an alcoholic since I was very young. She's had dry periods that range in duration from days to even 4 years once. It's funny I'm seeing this thread now, because it was just today that we discovered she had stolen a few dollars from my sister, and that she was concealing her alcohol in a liquid coffee creamer bottle. Crazy stuff. I've seen her spiral down FAR pretty much my entire life. She's been in jail numerous times, been to the psychiatric ward, been to rehab, been homeless---none of it has seemed to be her "rock bottom." It's really, really hard to see, but unfortunately you do have to come to a point where you kind of extract yourself emotionally from the person. I wouldn't wish having a loved one with an addiction on anyone... It's far too heartbreaking. :(

People are afraid to admit it but it's happening a lot in every family, they don't want to be labeled as abusers, they think its only for people who legally or illegally abuse someone, but there are all types of abusers, your bodies aren't suppose to be abused like that, it has a long term effect. Our bodies are God's temple, we are to respect it, keep it Holy, don't misuse or abuse it.
