This weekend I am going to do an update to our kitchen. It has 70's gold formica counter tops. I've been watching "How To" videos and plan to paint them!
YIKES!
I am a bit nervous but I am also confident that I can transform the counter tops into a nice looking "modern" look.
Has anyone else painted their counter tops?

No! I would like grantie counter tops
-
No we live in a rented house, so no that won't happen.

I would not do that. I have a friend who was a specialist in the cabinet department at Lowe's for a long time. I was going to do the same thing with the paint especially for painting countertops. He told me not to waste my time. He said it will scratch when you scoot stuff across the counter. And you can sometimes see if you don't get it even.
Some people say it works great though. After talking to him I decided to just live with the not so great color that they were when I bought the house. lol

I would think it would scratch off very easily, even if you primed them all. Good luck tho!

Good luck on your project I hope it all turns out great for you let us know after you're done how it looks maybe you can post a pic

No, I haven't tried it, but I saw a video about doing it while I was waiting for some paint at the hardware store. I think it would be worth the time to try it. Not sure I'll try it soon because I've got so many projects going right now.
Let us know how it turns out if you do it. Maybe post a pic.

I agree. I'd like to know how that comes out. I would probably not try it.

I never did it, I had my kitchen remodeled last year and got granit countertops. I’m not sure it will work, I would be concerned about scratch marks. Do they make paint especially for that?
-
I have seen similar videos. Good luck! DIY projects can be fun!

I had a counter in my house that was painted...….it was a side counter so it didn't get used too much...it did scratch but we painted it a light color that wasn't as noticeable. :)
-
I haven't but a fried of mine did, they held up very nice for a while, then they got scratched up some. They still look great though, she said she is going to redo them soon.

Good Luck on your project. I would like to have Marble Counter Tops in my Kitchen. I agree, your Counter Tops may scratch over time. Ask a Professional at Home Depot or where ever you get your Paint how likely it is to scratch. :)

I think it would be better to use a laminate than paint.
-
I didn't know that you could paint the counter tops. Guess I will have to google to see a how to video. Sounds pretty interesting.

I would not recommend it. Paint is not formulated for that, it won't hold up to any kind of heat of hot pans from the stove, and it will scratch pretty easy. I am thinking about putting some trim around my counter tops and getting the self leveling cement and pouring it on. Some of it you can have a color put in it and you won't have to worry about scratching it up. Or you can paint the top them with a special paint that won't scratch. Oh I guess I should mention I worked in the paint department for several years, and I have had a few. very few who did paint their counter tops come in tall me what a mistake they did and wanted to now to repair it. Sand, sand, and sand some more t and then apply paint remover and sand some more . Pretty going on a pain coming off.
-
I didn't know this could be done so I did a search and found that they sell countertop paint kits. They make is sound simple enough, if you are painting over a laminate countertop, then you will need to sand down the surface. Wipe away remaining dust, then dry the countertop before painting the countertop with a primer and paint roller. Apply one to two coats of paint and then seal the surface with polyurethane after the paint has dried. Good luck! I'm sure they'll turn out amazing.

I would not paint over that type of countertop. I am sure it will just start peeling or chipping off. Good luck with your project.

Well the counter tops look amazing! Yes I was skeptical and afraid before I started. I added a third top coat for extra protection against scratching.
I talked with several friends who have done their counter tops and that is how I even knew that is possible to paint them.
They've had them with no problems for several years. I also talked with people at the various stores and got pointers regarding doing such a project. Their are special kits just for painting counter tops.
Since purchasing real granite or marble or even different formica counter tops is out of my budget, this option made it possible to update the "dated" kitchen and make it look up with the times.

:bunny: :cat: :dog: I wouldn't think that painting a counter top vs some other item for your place would be any different. I haven't done this before, but I have painted a dresser, turned out the way it was supposed to. If your looking for a glossy kind of counter top, might be a bit different. Good luck! :bunny: :cat: :dog:

They have paint for counter tops as well as bathtubs.

My sister did this in her house to help sell it and they came out great. She did use a paint that was recommended for counter tops. Would try it but really don't like the colors that are offered and don't think they would match my cabinets

I actually marbleized the counter tops in a kitchen I lived in as a kid and rented from my mother later as an adult. It looked really cool. But eventually it peeled and just scraped off. I don't think I would do it again. Sure it was an affordable update...but it was very, very, very temporary.

My family went with Red wood over the old ones that were all white.

just had my counter tops replaced havent tried painting them before.

I need to do that, do it how could it be bad when you want to do that I painted my medal cabinets their ok lol.
