Title: Re-Gifting....
Post by: camellia0 on December 24, 2018, 04:16:49 pm
I have a Facebook friend who posted her office holiday gift. Someone gave her a figurine that you can put in your yard. It was in its original box, BUT the box was "yellowish" like it was sitting in the basement forever. Totally not cool. If I were this person, I would have bought chocolates instead. What do you think?

How do you know the gift your friend received was regifted. Maybe the box was yellowish when she bought it.  If it is new I dont really see what difference it makes.  Personally I think figurines are not cool gifts anyway. Most people do not have room to set random junk up and what you like somebody else may not.  I know some people love angels and want them sitting every where.  I personally do not.  I have a couple of collectables and close family knows what those are.  I have been in houses where there was so much junk sitting around you could not walk without being afraid you would knock something over.

I would never regift UNLESS I have something that I know the recipient would absolutely LOVE.

Otherwise, I just get a new gift.

It's okay to regift if the gift is going to someone who will love it. Just to do it to avoid buying something, not so much.

However, many times, a vintage gift or a gift on E-Bay can be new but has just been sitting on a shelf for awhile.

I would leave it alone. Don't be that person . . .

I wouldn't care about the packaging.  It's what's inside that matters.

Yeah someone gave me a gift this Christmas and she forgot to remove the  card but its ok. The thoughts that matter. Sometimes we received gifts that we don't like and its not bad to re gift it.

It depends on the gift but I don' have a problem with re-gifting if I know I'm not going to use it.

Sometimes in small shops inventory doesn't move quickly so boxes can get yellowed or items get "shop worn" so there is no way I would assume something was regifted (now if there was a tag left that said To:.....).
But I have no issue with regifting perfect example is the Olive Garden gift card above nothing wrong with that at all.

I don't have a problem with the re-gifting coming my way.  It is all in the thought process behind it.

Don't have a problem with any of that since I didn't have to spend a penny. So.......

I do occasionally regift things to my friends. But only if I think that person would enjoy it.  A few years ago someone gave me a cat mug. One of my friends really is a cat lover and I gave it to her with a gift card inside.  :present:

Perhaps the person who got her the gift doesn't like her & just gave her whatever because they just didn't care enough to search for a better gift... reason why it is not a good idea to do gift exchanges at work, always a potential set-up for disappointment.

I don't regift because when I get a gift for someone I really think about what the person would like. Another gift won't suit that purpose.

Re-gifting is rude IMO, but I guess it depends on the gift.

I will re-gift if I know I will not use it and suspect another person might like it.  I have only done it a few times in my life.  However, I once got a name of someone for a Christmas gift who I could not stand and who had been very stand-offish to me so I went ahead and gave her something I had received several years before and planned on donating to a charity.

I bought myself something once and ended up giving it as a gift to someone else, because I thought she would really like it.

Once in a while I will regift someone if I feel that they will enjoy and use it.

I would regift if I could not use the item but would tell the one receiving the item how I came about having it

I don't think there is anything wrong at all with re-gifting.  At the same time, I do think it is screwed to do that if the box was faded like you described.
