Title: Karoshi
Post by: Tresbn00 on January 13, 2019, 11:42:25 am
A warning to all workaholics. Karoshi is a Japanese word that means work to death and is identified as occupational sudden mortality. This sudden mortality is often the result of heart attack or stroke brought on by stress and a starvation diet. Karoshi has had reported occurances in people working sixty hours per week and include deaths of a 34 year old working 110 hours a week, 37 year old working 3000 hours a year, a 58 year old working 4,320 hours a year and a 22 year old that had 34 hours of continuous duty five times a month. I have averaged well over 3,000 hours a year for 40 years, currently average over 110 hours a week, and typically have several weekends that exceed 34 hours of continuous duty. My second job is somewhat less stressful. I have not been working out as much as I should and had a cold for about a month. I think I will slow down today.

My personal opinion is, you would be well advised to slow down the rest of your life, so you can enjoy the results of your excess labor for a long time to come and I am reasonably sure your family would feel the same way, just like mine was.

3000 hours a year is only 57 hours a week.  A lot of people work 60 hours a week.  There is only 168 hours in a 7 day period in order to work 110 hours a week you would need to work over 15 hours 7 days a week.    I find it hard to believe that there are very many people working those kinds of hours.

I did use to work with a guy who claimed he had worked 7 days a week and 12-16 hour shifts for several weeks and he WAS on the clock those hours but he was not working.  He spent most of his time in an office with his feet propped up sleeping.

As for working 34 hours of continuous duty I would have a hard time believing that.  Your body will eventually just shut down.  Unless maybe you are taking some major pills. Or they can sleep on the job.  Firefighters and EMS workers work 24 on 48 off but they can sleep any time they are not on a call.  So even though they are on continuous duty they are not physically working.

When I was younger I worked a lot of 12 hour shifts but by choice would not do that now.

Tresbn00, you need to slow down.  Life is too short to just be WORK WORK WORK.  You said you work long hours at your first job and not as many at your second job.

Heed your own warning about Karoshi.....slow down.

Workaholic. The word doesn't even make sense to me. Why would anyone want to work more than necessary? What is the point if you'll have no life in the meantime? What are you working for? I just don't get it.

People usually work for the money/status or to prove a point, etc.....though occasionally it's just to survive...

lol MOST people work because they need the money to survive. I do not know anyone who would work if they did not have to.

Good idea - We all should slow down and enjoy what God has given us.

I've never heard that term before. It's a shame how some people's entire lives revolve around working just to survive. I wish we all had that luxury to slow down but sadly, not everyone can.
