How long do you usually warm your car up if you live in a cold climate? I try to leave an extra 10 minutes so that the needle has started to move above the absolutely cold mark! However, I also dislike wasting the gas. Of course, I also don't want to do damage to my engine. My neighbor leaves his running for long periods, probably as much as 20-30 minutes.
-
I let my truck run for about 5-10 minutes on really cold mornings. If I don't it stalls.
-
I think 5-10 minutes like you are already doing is plenty enough to do the job without wasting too much gas on it.
-
Typically around 10 minutes, but at least 20 minutes if the doors are frozen.
-
We rarely have to start the car and run it for awhile. I loved my little diesel truck when I lived int northern part of the state. It had an electric heat motor and all I had to do in the evenings was plugged it into the electric outlet and when i would go out the next morning all I had to do was wait for the glow plugs to come on and away I would go. Never missed a day of work because I couldn't get it started.

Never warm my car up. When I get in I just turn on the seat warmers and it feels warm right away.
Remember I'm the girl who had the car with seat warmers for over a year until I figured it out accidentally. :confused1:
Just call me genius girl. I don't mind.

Normally, I let my car run for about 10-15 minutes.
-
Usually 5 - 10 minutes depending on how cold, how frosty, snow, etc...
-
I usually let my Car warm up for at least fifteen minutes. I like to make sure that all of my Windows are defrosted completely.
-
I let it warm up for about 5 minutes at the most. If it has ice or frost on it I let it go a little longer
-
Probably 15 minutes. I hate getting in the car and freezing all the way to my destination.
-
Usually 5 minutes but really never that much longer unless it is full of ice. Always make sure that settings are set on high before I shut off the car so when I use the remote start it will warm up faster and clear the ice

lol Yeah cause it is bad when you forget for some reason it got turned over to cool and you just go start it and don't think and 15 minutes later you go out there and it has been running blowing COLD air the whole time. smh
-
I let mine warm up for about five minutes unless there is frost on the windows. Then I let it run long enough so I can get the frost off.
-
Boy - I don't remember how long we did it. Maybe 10 minutes. We now live in the south where you want to cool the car before you get in :D

I don't think I have ever done that. lol

i don't make a habit of warming up the car unless it is really cold which it has been this winter 20 degrees or below and windy. most of the time i start it just before i walk out the door.i usually takes me about about 5 minutes to walk and get into the car :rainbow: :peace:
-
Generally, no more then five minutes, even though we get cold weather; i think that is sufficient time and less tear on the engine.
-
Usually I only let it warm up about five minutes just long enough to get the gas going to the pipes it has been a good vehicle and started every cold morning for me OK and I’m a little sport with this key free starting thing I stand on the back porch and can start the car without having to go out in the cold it’s awesome
-
I usual do 5 minutes when its cold and 10 when it is super cold.
-
I don't have remote start and I'm too impatient, so I probably only run the car for 2 or 3 minutes, even when it's below zero, or long enough to brush the snow off. I just drive really slow until it loosens up a bit.

5 minutes won't warm the car up. I could care less about the engine. I let it run a few to warm the car up so I am not freezing when I drive to where ever I am headed. lol
-
Yes! Warm up your car...your engine because it is very important.
There are other ways to warm up your car. Install "an engine block
heater" and then plug in at night or when the vehicle is parked.
Talk to your mechanic about options or consult with an expert.

:clover: :peace: :clover: I usually leave my car running about 5 minutes, enough time to find a good song to jam too. ;D If it's too cold outside I'll run my car for about 15 minutes to get warm before having to drive it. :clover: :peace: :clover:

Usually about 10 minutes or so.
-
Holy Cow, I cant remember. Our car were always garaged in New York State so maybe only 10 minutes or so to get heat! We live on the Gulf Coast of Florida now so now its about getting the car cooled off! LOL
-
I hardly warm mine up. I really should I guess, as it's an old car.
What the down side to not warming it up?
-
5-8mins depending on if I'm in a rush or not I just in the car and look at my phone :)
-
At least 5 minutes,, need the engine and transmission fluids to warm up to flow..
-
I don't warm my car but then I don't live in too much of a cold climate. It gets cold certainly but rarely in single digits cold. I've heard modern cars now don't need to warm up. My car is three years old. It heats up pretty quickly.
-
I warm my car up for about 10 minutes or so, depending on how cold it is.
-
Usually just a minute and just go. Especially when I'm running late. Just start and go.
-
Better safe than sorry!
It is simply too risky if your car stalls in the middle of the highway.
Make sure your car is "warm enough" to drive on a public street.
Also warm up your car away from windows, so no one inhales the fumes.

Your car isn't going to stall because it is cold outside.

My pickup lives in the garage so I let it warm up about 30 seconds. If it sits outside, maybe 5 minutes.
-
Usually a good 5 minutes, sometimes 10 depending on how cold.
-
I always warm mine up for 10-15 minutes before leaving the house. My car does not run very well in the cold so the warmer it is, the angrier it sounds. Plus, it always seems like it eats more gas when it's colder, but that could just be me.
-
Where I live we don't have to worry about warming the car more than a few mornings a year. Then we just warm it for a few minutes.
-
It depends on how cold it is, if my vehicle was in a garage or not and how much gas is in the tank at the time. I try and keep my tank full in the winter to avoid that being a problem. Lately I've only had to let it run 10 min or so... basically to defrost the windows...
-
I don't live somewhere cold enough to do that regularly, but it made me very nervous the few times I have. I'm afraid someone's going get in and steal the car while it's running, lol
-
I have lived somewhere in the past that required my car getting warmed up but that was years ago and my husband was disabled and didn't work so he went out and did it for me so I don't remember the time but I would say about 10 minutes on really cold days.
-
I don't warm my vehicle to "warm the vehicle". If it is cold I let it run and turn the heat on so it is not freezing cold when I get in it and have to drive somewhere. I do it for me not to benefit the car.
-
I never intentionally warm my car up. Only time it ever happens is if there is heavy frost or ice on the windows and I need to use the defrost setting on the heater to make my car visibly safe to drive. Otherwise, I hop in at 10 below, start 'er up, and freeze on my way to work. I live close enough to work that the three minute drive to get there is neither long enough to warm up the car, nor long enough for me to really be that cold for that long anyway - so why even bother wasting the gas to warm it?
-
It was usually not taking nearly 30 minutes, but it is also getting warmer in my area. Is it at least getting warmer in your area?
-
Never warm my car up since it lives in a garage
-
Wow! I guess I didn't realize that people had to plan car warming into their schedule. I don't think I've ever had to warm up a car more than a handful of times. If there was ice on the windshield when I was going to work, I would turn on the heat and windshield wipers or use a scraper, but that didn't take but a couple of minutes.
-
I use about 10min at most but then I need to leave so however warm the car is, I go.
-
Like many people on here, I usually let it run for 5 - 10 minutes. However, I've been reading some articles that claim it isn't wise to warm it up. Being originally from a Northern state, I would think that this would be an absolute must!
-
I do warm my car up in the winter time,,, but usually only for about 5 minutes. My heater warms up really fast, so by the time I turn the car on,,, put my coat on and walked to my car it is warm ( garage not attached to house, and It has a automatic start) plus my seats have a warmer also     so Nice in the winter !!
-
maybe a few minutes...hubby lets it warm up longer than i do...
-
I had to warm my car up this morning to get the frost off the windshield! It's supposed to be in the mid-70's today but was chilly this morning.
-
I'm not sure if I should be warming up my car, but I don't.
-
Where I live the winters used to be worse years and years ago when it would snow more and get much colder so we would warm the car every time for about 10 minutes or so. Plus we kept a blanket in the car for extra heat since below zero winters were common back then. I'm not saying they don't happen now, but for some reason more recently our winters have been much milder and warming the car isn't as necessary. However even when it got colder more recently we didn't warm our car, because we didn't feel like going out early and waiting for it to warm up. Wasting gas as the OP said is another thing we especially can't afford to do now.
-
I'm so lucky i have a hearted garage and also its pretty cool in the summer .
-
I have a remote start and use it year round. It runs for 12 minutes at a time and we don't have to go outside to start the car. If it's really cold, I run it twice I will also use it if I'm out running errands because I don't like cold. In the summer I run it usually once. We have remote starts on all our vehicles.
