India used an indigenously developed ballistic missile interceptor to destroy one of its own satellites at a height of 300 km (186 miles), in a test aimed at boosting its defenses in space.   India's top defense scientist said the debris would burn up in 45 days.

In 2007, China destroyed a satellite in a polar orbit, creating the largest orbital debris cloud in history, with more than 3,000 objects, according to the Secure World Foundation. Since the impact altitude exceeded 800 km (500 miles), many of the resulting scraps stayed in orbit.

"We will continue to closely monitor the remaining debris from India's ASAT test to ensure the safety of assets on-orbit and human spaceflight activities such as the International Space Station," said Garrett Marquis, a National Security Council spokesman.

Marquis said the United States remained committed to working with all nations to "mitigate the operational effects of orbital debris."

"As part of our strategic partnership, the United States will continue close engagements with India on shared interests in space," he added, listing areas that included "safety and security" as well as human space exploration.

I've heard of rare objects falling from the sky, but this sound like a LOT of debris objects can fall.

 :BangHead:      Everyone But US!!!!!

187 countries -- not including the US -- agree to restrict ...
https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/11/world/basel-convention-plastic-waste-trade-intl/index.html

Nearly every country in the world agreed to a treaty aimed at limiting plastic waste pollution, but the U.S. was not among them, as it has not ratified a treaty to which the provision was added.

The governments of 187 countries agreed to add plastic to the United Nations-supported Basel Convention, which regulates the transfer of certain materials between borders, CNN reported Saturday.

The U.S. did not participate in the talks regarding plastic because it is one of just two countries that has not ratified the treaty, according to CNN. Even though the U.S. did not ratify the treaty, its trades with countries that have approved the deal will be affected.

According to ABC News, several industries will be affected by the move, including health care, technology, food and fashion.

“It’s sending a very strong political signal to the rest of the world — to the private sector, to the consumer market — that we need to do something,” Rolph Payet of the United Nations Environment Program told ABC. “Countries have decided to do something which will translate into real action on the ground.”

Whoops!      US birth rates reach record lows for women in their teens and 20s, leading to the fewest babies in 32 years

The fertility rate of 1.7 births per U.S. woman also fell 2%, meaning the current generation isn't making enough babies to replace itself. The fertility rate is a hypothetical estimate based on lifetime projections of age-specific birth rates.

If trends continue, experts said, the U.S. can expect labor shortages including in elder care when aging baby boomers need the most support.
Births to teenagers again reached a record low. The number of births to mothers ages 15 through 19 was 179,607, down 8%.

I had my token three children. My daughter made up for a lot of the deficit by having nine and my oldest son has four.  :icon_rr:
