It depends on the product and if it is a "best when used by" or if it actually has an expiration date.

A lot of things are good past the date on the item.  I have drank milk that is a couple days past.  If it still smells and tastes good.

Canned food is good sometimes years past the date.  The date on the can is actually for the guarantee on the can and how long IT will keep the food fresh.  Canned food will last forever.  Although it usually does start to taste bad after a while and change consistency.

Like gaylasue said - there is a best by and an expiration and if you are not paying attention you do not catch that or realize they are two different things.

It depends on what it is. If it is dairy products, I don't. If it is Chips, crackers or any type of dry food I will eat it if it expired a day or two ago.

I agree, I had food poisoning once, never want that again.

It depends on what it is and how broke I am. Lol.

Usually it's canned and boxed foods - occasionally I'll have milk that's a day or two over if it's not "bad" yet.

Try to drink and eat fresh food products.
Avoid expired products. It is just to risky!

I have eaten foods past the "sell by date" lots of times.  The labeling "sell by" tells the store how long to display the product for sale.

and how soon after the expiration date listed

I would think it would as she said depend on the product.  Some things are okay to use after and some things are not.  I mean milk sours and clabbers and is gross.  They have to put a date on it.  I figure over all if it smells okay and tastes okay then it should be fine.

But that reminds me of a 2nd job I had once where I worked in a camp and the woman who was over the kitchen was smelling of sandwich meat to see if it was okay.  I swear she rubbed her nose on the sandwich meat to smell of it and said it smells okay.  I threw it in the trash.  People are disgusting.

I'll eat canned goods after the expiration date, but never dairy or meat.

Like everyone else, it depends on what it is, Milk is good for a few days after expiration date, but depends on how it smells.  If it is cans and boxes, i trusted for about a month or 2 after, but after that i will throw away.  I do not want food poisoning.

Most people do not  know this, But as the manufactors are canning the items  and or bottling them  they will use  several  dates on them as the months of  produce are canned,  Does not mean  the  food  has expired but it is time to  move the old cans out and put in new.  Health inspectors say  most is good for  5 years although most  never last that  long.  They  check us all of the time at the Ministry.  we will not put out  badly dented, bulging or rusted cans at all. And our  baby food is  constantly being   checked, We never  give any away that has  expired. we dump it into containers instead of putting it in the trash in case of dumpster divers.

really depends on the item itself...but i have had food poisoning and it is a killer all by itself..never want that again...milk i dont do becasue of dairy allergy..haven't ate fish in 40 years due to food poisoning..but like i said it really depends on the item and how it is packed..

Yes all the time.  If it's canned as long as it's not dented it's fine.

It depends. If the food is still good I would use it even if it expires. But if the food goes bad when it gets moldy and fungi then it's really bad so I throw it out.

The dates on the bottom of the can change every day by one day.  The date on the can is not when the food will go bad but the date the can is guaranteed to keep the food safe.

The food will last longer than 5 years.  Although it may change in appearance.  But if the can is not rusted or damaged it will not kill you to eat it.  Canned food lasts forever.

Of course you cannot give food away that is expired.  Although we have a bargain place here in town that sells bulk food and you have to watch because a lot of it is expired.  I am not sure how they get away with doing this.  I assume the ones that need to know are not aware.  I have seen things expired by as much as a year.

I also know there is as far as I know only one soup kitchen type place and they get a lot of food from this place so they are serving food that is expired.

You have to dump it in ways that no one can steal it, because if someone does and gets sick they can try to sue you.  Which seems unfair when they dig thru the dumpster and get it out of there.  I worked in a retail place once and we pulled crackers off the shelf and the manager gave me a box knife and told me to slash thru the box and the bag inside before throwing it in there.

Never! I won't touch the milk within a few days of the date. I'm the expiration date warden in my household. My mother on the other hand is a "just eat around the mold" type person. Bleh.

lol Most older people will cut the mold off cheese and still eat it.  I won't do that.

Some cheeses are purposely made with mold. All health sites say it's okay to eat cheese if it starts getting moldy. You just need to cut an inch off the part with the mold. <ilk is good for at least 7 days after the expiration date.

Most canned goods have a best by.... 2-year date. I use it up until 4 years after the date i buy it. Most "survival" foods have a 25-year date so I figure if they have that long a time of use, then 4 years should be fine...UNLESS the cans are dented (which I never buy but hubby does-he forgets to look) or bulging AND/or have those nice convenient pop-top lids. I used those quick because you can't tell if there's a pin hole in that lets the bad guys into the food. You're friendly cash register people won't take care putting cans in a bag so they're easy to pop the top just ever so slightly.
I opened a can of tuna the other month well within the best buy date and some of the fish were black. Threw it away.

No I would never use anything past the expiration date.  They put the date of products for a reason.  If you use something past the expiration date it could make you sick.

Do I ear or drink anything past the expiry date?  Of course I do, all the time!  But only after a small taste test to make sure it’s still good, but yeah, I do consume last expiry dates, eggs especially, I find those don’t go bad.  Cream cheese unopened even opened I’ve kept in my friedge and we have consumed couple years past expiry (I kid you not!).  We just finished some cream cheese I had opened in fridge a couple years ago, it was too expensive to throw out so we tested to see if we could use it after expiry date.  When we went to use it, it was couple years past, tested it, seemed fine, used it and had no issues, no taste difference, no sickness, it was fine.  Glad it didn’t go to waste  :)

I think the expiration date on a product is just the deadline to buy the product. Things don’t necessarily spoil on their expiration dates whenever applicable.

No it is the date the product expires.  Depending on what the product is.  Usually milk is not good past the date.  A day or so maybe.  People who say they drink it a month past the date are lying.  It will sour.  Same with a lot of other stuff.  Food does not last forever.  It does go bad.

If you look some things have a sell by date and an expiration date.

I don't eat most stuff past the date.  Some canned stuff I will.  I also don't hoard tons of food like some people do.

Buy organic milk instead of regular: It lasts a whole lot longer.

Though priced higher than the conventional milk, organic milk is quite worthy for the bucks spent.

Be it the nutritional significance of higher PUFA and omega-3-fatty acid content in contrast to regular variety that has more omega-6-fatty acid. It can last up to six months on the shelf unopened. This is because in the difference of treatment processes employed. Organic milk is processed using Ultra High Temperature (UHT) that kills all the bacteria. While regular milk is pasteurized this kills not all but the harmful ones.

UHT treatment is given as the organic milk has to be transported to places where organic farming isn’t practiced.

I've heard that some foods are good past the best by date and that the best by date is an approximation so that foods might still be fresh depending on the circumstances so I'll eat them on occasion if they appear to still be fresh. I've had some cake mix past the sell by date and it came out fine too. Some foods last a bit longer because they are dry (like cake mix, rice, pasta, etc), but I don't think liquids or wet foods are as trustworthy with this. Milk occasionally will last longer so I will drink it, but if in doubt throw it out.

There are dates on products that are there for a reason.  It's understanding what the dates are for.  There is use by, sell by and expiration.  An expiration date is the only thing the FDA recognizes as far as food safety goes.  Use by or sell by dates are integrated for freshness of product.  Beyond that common sense must be applied.

It depends on what it is. If it is a dairy product, such as milk or cheese, no I do not. If it is orange juice, on the other hand, it still tastes pretty normal past the expiration date.

It depends how far pass the expiration date the  food is; I don't want to take the chance of getting sick; if it does not smell right i am defintely not eating.

Most food items (yes even some dairy products) are perfectly fine for a little while after their dates. Especially if the item has not been opened. And a lot of people mix up sell by, best by and use by dates, all of which are not the same thing.

No not me. I probably throw food away that is still good but if it is past the date it gets chucked out. My mom is deceased now but she would keep stuff way past date I guess because of growing up in the depression.

I do , because things will still be fresh milk I will just shake and it's like fresh for a few more days.

I absolutely agree; it depends on the product.

It depends on the product and if it is a "best when used by" or if it actually has an expiration date.
