Couch.  I'm from the east coast not sure that makes a difference.  I know some people from different regions use different terms for things.

I've always called it a couch.  Sofa sounds a little too fancy (like it belongs in a parlor) :)

I call it a couch (what my mom called it). My husband calls it a sofa (what his mom called it). Both of my kids call it a couch. My cat just calls it "Mine."  :peace:

I've always called it a couch, although I like the sound of "sofa" better.

Technically, there is a difference. A sofa has two arms, and a couch has one or none.

I never knew that.  You learn something new everyday. :)

  What is the difference?
Different names for the same thing...why?

Got curious and did a search and here's what I found:

Difference between sofa and couch

Image: homedit.com
So, whereas a couch has no arms, a sofa is characterized by two arms and a uniform back. Sofas have more seating space than couches, and thus also tend to occupy more space in places they are kept. Another difference between the two pertains to a provision of a bed inside a sofa which is never found inside a couch.

You can't believe everything you find on the Internet.

Couch when speaking. Sofa when typing.  LOL  To me sofa was something that was in a parlor in bigger homes. Couch is something that actually gets used.

I call my couch a "couch"...   I have a couch that makes into a bed upstairs & that one is called a "sofa bed".

Is it a regional thing to call a "couch" a "sofa" ....   like calling a "soda" a "pop" or a "coke".   Interesting.

I use the two interchangeably.

After giving this further thought, how about not using either one? When you have company just wave your hand in the right direction and say, "Have a seat",

I call it a couch.   I always thought that a sofa and a couch were the same thing.  Kind of like a "pop" is the same as a "soda"...perhaps a regional thing.

Interesting to me is that I think a "Sofa table" sounds better than a "couch table"

Must be a regional linguistic pattern because I found another one:

Bureau or Chest of Drawers?

bureau
[ˈbyo͝orō]

NOUN
bureaus (plural noun)

N America
a chest of drawers.
synonyms:
cabinet · cupboard · chiffonier · sideboard
British
a writing desk with drawers and typically an angled top opening downward to form a writing surface.

I usually refer to it as a couch, but I have heard some older generations refer to it as a davenport. I hear sofa occasionally.

   HAHAHAHAHA

We call it couch at my house.  My daughter is an interior designer and calls them couch.  Occasionally she will call it a sofa, but that is usually because that is what the client is calling it.

I grew up in Middle Tennessee, and it's always been a sofa to me! However, I, too, assumed that the two were interchangeable.  Probably, most everyone would know what you were talking about if you used either!

The couch is more comfy for me than a sofa. Not to mention the investment in the right one could last for years t come. Buying cheap in furniture usually doesn't go well long term

Couch because a sofa looks sounds like a very large chair/recliner.
