Title: Bad Produce
Post by: debidoo on January 08, 2020, 12:41:30 pm
WOW we have a grocery in our area (I believe that they are now throughout the South) called Publix.  They have great customer service and used to have awesome produce and it is still decent but you have to be way more careful with not only the produce but a lot of products    Does your store have good produce?  What brought this up was the last two bags of apples were not great  Not worth the price for sure.

Not really.   I would like to see a better variety. and definitely fresher produce.  I would like if the carrots still had the leaves on as that is also edible.  It seems like the stuff that gets delivered here is just barely above toss it out.  We only have 2 stores so not much to choose from.

I have heard of that store before but never been in one.  I thought they were randomly all over the US.  Our grocery store is decent.  Doesn't matter half of what you buy gets recalled for listeria fears. smh

I do not even visit the produce department.

I think we have a Publix now here in Memphis but I've never been there.  I only go to Aldi now because I can walk there in 15 minutes, since I have no car now.  I could walk the other way and shop at kroger in 20 minutes but I'm used to Aldi, which has pretty decent produce, at good prices.  This week have avocados for 39 cents each, that's a bargain these days!

Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on, but you really have to pick through our neighborhood Walmart produce in order to get something good. I have heard about "ugly" fruits and vegetables that used to get thrown away because they were ugly and not perfect. I know now that Walmart gets it for cheaper and passes on the savings to the shoppers. But Publix is expensive enough that they shouldn't be doing the same thing! If I was paying a premium for produce, I would expect it to be the flawless kind!  :peace:

I usually purchase most of my produce from Aldi's or Kroger's until the local farmer's market opens up.  I would much rather purchase locally grown produce whenever possible.

When it comes to groceries including and especially produce, I try to check over everything carefully when we're in the store.  If we find that something isn't right or is not fresh, we take it back and either get a replacement or a refund.  The customer service in our local stores are very good.

Now if we're getting our produce from a local farmer, which I am perfectly fine with, I always try a sample before buying.  I don't think think there are returns on local produce in our area so we try before we buy.

I rarely shop at Publix. Walmart is so much closer to me. The closest Publix for me is in the Villages about 20 miles away. I have always thought they had the best quality in everything though. And if you can't find something at Walmart or Winn Dixie, Publix always has it.

I have heard of Publix but there are none in my area.  I get my produce from the farmers market.  We have an indoor large farmers market that is open Thursday to Saturday.  Most of it is grown, made, or produced by Amish.  Never had any problems with bad produce or anything they sell.  The pies and canned goods are so good!

Our Publix here in Georgia is great they have the freshest produce and everything is just great.  We have an Aldi's and Kroger and a lot of other stores we can get fresh produce, but Publix is our number one store.

Two things, first how to you take it back if it is not fresh? You should know that before you put it in your cart?

Also, I am curious as to how to "try a sample" before purchasing from a local farmer.  What farmer lets you cut in to the produce? Just curious.

I think the more choices you have to make your purchase the better quality you have.  We only have Walmart and one grocery store (even though there are two of that same store) so we are limited.  The produce is decent quality I guess.  But the higher quality the more they charge. :(

As one example, we've bought apples from the grocery produce that looked just fine on the outside but had too many brown spots inside.  They looked good and fresh in the store but were not.

As far as the free samples are concerned, our smaller, local produce stands in our town usually let the customer try a sample of produce, usually a piece of fruit, that they have cut up.  The same thing is true at our area farmer's market.

Well I never would have thought to take them back if they had brown spots in the center.

Our farmer market does not have fruit.  But here is the thing on that - the biggest seller at our farmer market goes to my church. :D  If we told him we got something that was bad inside he would make it right.  There is a trailer that shows up in the Spring that has watermelons and it usually has one cut up but just because that one is good doesn't mean the next one will be.  :(

I have heard they drive up from down South.  Idk  Our preacher always does a huge garden and he gave us a lot of stuff last year.  Then sometimes random people bring stuff in.  We had a drought last year and lost a lot of stuff so I don't see me trying to grow much this year.  I really want to get in to some herbs.

We have Publix and I love to shop there.  I haven't had any problems with produce, but I'm sure they will take care of you if you let them know.  Awsome store

We have a couple stores. The IGA's produce isn't very nice because most people don't buy produce there. Giant and the other grocery store have beautiful produce but more expensive. I usually go to the produce store down the street. Prices are great and they have expanded now into meats and they look soooo good. We bought ham steaks there and they were very good, not salty and not heavily smoked. Hubby went back the next day for more and only 1 was left. I guess because they were only $2 each. I even got NY strip steaks 2/$7 but for those meats, you have to get there as soon as they put them out and I haven't figured out when that is yet.  :D  They always had a deli with some meats like roasts, but mostly lunch meat and cheese. Also have homemade baked goods and candies. Their produce isn't the greatest in storage time. The motto is "buy it quick and use it quick." Some produce only lasts a couple days but you can't beat lettuce 2 heads/$150, or bananas 5 lb. for $1.

If you put the lettuce in the lock and lock containers you will see it stays fresher a lot longer. Those L&L containers are great for everything. All diiferent sizes and they run deals with them on the TV shopping channels.HSN and QVC.

Publix here in Georgia has great Produce, but we also have an Inles and you can not get my Husband out of this Store. He loves all kinds of Fruit there. He is a big Fruit eater anyway. I have to admit that Ingles has the best Produce.

I don't think I would take fruit back. Fruit's a gamble. They didn't knowingly sell me an apple with a brown spot in it so I don't see it as the store's fault. I do notice that AJ's our ritzy grocery store always has pretty reliably really good fruit, but it's expensive. Frys, Safeway, Walmart are all a gamble.

I have heard of Publics but I have never been to one before. I know they are in Virginia but I am not sure about Pennsylvania.
