Title: Do You Like Planet Fitness?
Post by: killers2 on January 08, 2020, 04:12:30 pm
I have really been enjoying my membership.  I got it for the new year.  $99 for the whole year!  I have mostly been just using the treadmill but hope to get into weights.

I got a couple of friends that go there. For some reason the name Planet Fitness always makes me stop and think for a minute. I always thought the name was old.

Nawww there is little I could do there due to my disabilities but there is an LA fitness relatively near me and they have a heated pool now there I would go.

My daughter has gone there a few time with friends and said that it has generally been crowded, people seem more interested in picking up dates than weights, and cleanliness was an issue...staff/patrons do not wipe down the workout equipment when they are done, bathrooms were a mess, and people do not re-rack their weights. Our family has a membership at a tennis club that costs thirty five dollars for all four of us because my wife will work at the tennis desk for three hours a month. We have access to six different clubs, free tennis, personal training, no crowds, a housekeeping staff, cafeteria with good health food, and three, mineral/salt water, swimming pools at the clube that we frequent (about eight miles from our home).

I have enjoyed it. Signed up back in November. Outside of taking part in one training session as moral support for/with my wife, I have only used their treadmills, but it has helped me to reach my daily step goals many times.

Even though they have many machines and a lot of weights, I still prefer the privacy of my basement weight benches where I don't have to worry about whether the person before my wiped them down or remember to do it myself.  I also like the freedom of listening to my own music or podcast without headphones when I do weight training at home.

That said, my wife has benefitted a lot by joining PF (other than this morning when she backed our car into a pickup truck on the way out and did a good amount of rear and back fender damage... NOT A SCRATCH on the oversized pickup that was extended far beyond the rest of the line of cars).

I have never used Planet Fitness, but I know people who personally have. Most of them have told me that the membership is overpriced, LOL.

$10 a month for unlimited use of all the equipment - essentially 24/7 is pretty reasonable IMO.

I've never been a member but I've recently gained some extra pounds so for $10 a month for unlimited use of all the equipment it's something I might look into!

I like Planet Fitness -- I joined because one was a new one opening by my home & they had cheap incentives to join.  I rarely go, but for $10 a month & open 24/7 it's a bargain.  I joined to work out at 5:30am, but haven't gotten back in that exercise time groove yet. Perhaps when it gets warmer.

They have a $20 a month option that includes the massage machines, I'm tempted to upgrade.

During the summer they offer free membership for young adults to work-out -- if I remember correctly last summer it was for 15,16,17 year olds.  Just for the summer months. Perhaps your granddaughter will get to take advantage of that this summer :)

I have never tried it; but I have friends and family that have used; they all have different opinions about their experience there, so it is hard to tell. ???

I have never been to a Planet Fitness.  One has opened up in the town where I will be moving and I am considering joining because I do need the exercise.

My wife signed up at this level. She hasn't used the extra stuff a lot, but she has used it. Another benefit to that higher rate is that you can go to any Planet Fitness location, where with the normal membership I think you are only permitted access at your home location.

I don't mind it but their whole "judgement free zone" thing is bullshit. People have judged me more there than any other gym I've ever gone to.

Who is judging you, is it the workers? Or the other people working out?  Sorry that happens to you, nothing is worse than trying to get or stay fit & people judging you while you're trying your best to achieve. At least you're there & trying...

I have always been a bit skeptical of that slogan. Obviously they have some semblance of control over the staff, but there is no way they can impose the "no judgment" mentality on other patrons. If I feel that an employee is 'judging' me, I can always speak privately to a manager. But if it is a gym rat looking down on me for having lesser abilities, what options do I really have? It's not like this is middle school recess.

I go about 4-5 times a week and I have seen ALL shapes and sizes in there. I'm not going to lie. I do notice people at the extremes because they do stand out - I see people who massively out of shape, but looking to improve; and I see some guys who are obviously on steroids. (Even overheard a couple guys in the locker room one day gossiping about another member who was heavy into steroid use).

When I see the extremely overweight person in the step room or the elderly person barely keeping up on the slow paced treadmill, my gut reaction is to send positive thoughts to them without gawking or judging. That kind of dedication is inspiring.  On the flip side (and in technical violation of the "judgment free zone") I am a bit internally judgmental of the guys who are more interested in showing off/admiring themselves in the mirrors or the people who are there for a social hour.

Unfortunately, I cannot say. At my job, we have free gym membership. But I know a few people who have Planet Fitness memberships, and they absolutely love the facility.

I have never been a member of Planet Fitness, but some people in my area seem to like it while others think it gets too crowded at times.  I belong to a smaller gym near my home and it is just the right size with just enough members you can usually get on equipment without waiting or waiting very little.  It also has some good trainers.  The trainers charge $25 per hour which is a pretty good deal for professional training. I have been working out with a trainer 1-2 times per week for about 8 weeks now as well as going in once per week on my own.  My endurance and strength is improving quite a bit.
Now if I could keep my mouth shut a little more, I could lose some weight.  Right now I just seem to be maintaining.
