Question, when did stop signs morph into yield signs? I've had soooo many near misses recently and it's driving me nuts! Did I miss the memo from DMV that the big red sign is now "I'll stop if I have to?"

I have found that a lot of people never stop, rather they do a rolling stop or don't stop at all. I have had some close calls because of idiots like this. Its dangerous out there when driving.

:) There are some very careless drivers out there. And some of them, ignore the stop signs with serious consequences. And this is what happened: They did not stop...the other drivers on the other street did not have a stop sign, "they had the right of way!" Some very dangerous accidents happened. They could have been avoided, if they had stop in full at the stop sign.

We live on a street with a stop sign one house down from us. Sometimes I'll sit in our living room and just look out the window and watch what the cars do as they approach the sign. I would say that only about 10% actually come to a complete stop at the sign. Maybe 60% do rolling stops, and the fother 30% don't even stop and plow right through. :angry7:
I keep waiting for a collision. It's just inevitable. I can't believe how stupid and careless some drivers are. And yet people wonder why auto insurance rates only go up. :BangHead:

You mean you didn't know? The stop signs with the white outer edge are purely optional! ;)

Most of the people in my neighborhood stop for the stop sign next to my house. It's an almost sure collision if they don't. I've watched a few accidents from people who try to look without stopping. It's on the top of two rather steep down slopes, so you can't really see what's coming as it is. On top of that, it's a busy road.

Well I don't want to curve the topic of the thread, but can anyone tell me if stop signs located infront of supermarkets and such are private stop-signs (aka owned by the storefront) or are they owned by the gov't? Because admittedly late at night when no people or cars are around I RARELY stop for those-- just kind of drift through slowly. In that situation could a newbie-cop stop me if it's owned by the storefront?
For the record, I stop for all other stop signs though.

Yeah, most of the time people slow down just enough to make sure they can continue throuh without getting hit...kinda sad...
