Interesting. I've never heard of spaghetti gravy, so I googled it and found this blog.
https://hardcoreitalians.blog/2019/05/22/is-it-sauce-or-gravy-why-italians-argue-about-the-term/
Where the term came about
Although the term “Gravy” doesn’t exist in Italy, it WAS in fact invented by Italians from Italy. When Italians immigrated to the United States, they tried to assimilate to American culture. Although they wanted to keep their traditions and heritage, they desired to become accepted in the new country. For most Italians, this meant learning English!
During the Americanization process, there was a confusion with the word “Ragu” (A.K.A. Meat Sauce). If you translate “Sugo” to English you get “Sauce” but when you translate “Ragú” to English you get “Ragout.” Ragout is a French-styled stew. Uh, oh!
I’m not sure about you, but if I was new in America trying to fit in… I certainly wouldn’t invite people over for ragout!
This lead to a difference in opinion. Some Italians choose to call it “Meat Sauce” while some decided to call it “Gravy.”
Why gravy? Americans were already using it to describe sauce containing meat. That is actually how it is termed in the definition. Understandable at the time to choose the word, since there weren’t many resources or speech pathologists on hand!
It is rumored that only certain areas started calling it “Gravy.” For example, many people will comment that it’s a ‘Jersey thing.’ However, I’ve heard people from all over the United States use it. This makes it very hard to pinpoint the exact origin.

That is interesting. I never knew why my in-laws called it gravy, I just always went along with it. I called it sauce and usually would call it sauce when in their company. Thanks for the information.

I call it sauce, my wife calls it gravy.
-
Interesting....I had never heard the term referred to as gravy...I think of gravy as what I put on mashed potatoes...sauce is what I put on spaghetti
-
Italian family, only ever heard it called sauce. I've never heard anybody call it gravy. I would be so confused if I heard that.
-
I don't know anyone who calls it gravy it is always been spaghetti sauce around here
-
Sauce of course.
-
I call it sauce
Gravy to me is what you make from meat juices after cooking, and you add flour and water, and pour over potatoes
-
Sauce. Gravy is for biscuits! :P :silly:
-
Never heard it called gravy, it is always sauce at my house.
-
When i have spaghetti its sauce not gravy. If i had fries on the other hand I'd have that smothered with white country gravy.
-
We have always called it sauce in our house.
-
for spaghetti, we call it sauce, but with meatballs we call it gravy.
-
I call it sauce, I had no idea that some people called it gravy lol! Probably varies by region of the country
-
When you make spaghetti, do you call it sauce or gravy you put on it?
As an Italian we're allowed to call it either!
-
I don't make it but I call it sauce because it's red like salsa.
-
Sauce, have never referred to it as gravy.
-
To me it is called sauce because to me gravy is brown and you put it on potatoes, rice or certain types of meat.
-
We call is spaghetti sauce. I have never heard it called gravy in my whole life. Gravy is reserved for the liquid brown stuff you put on meat or mashed potatoes.
-
I love spaghetti sauce. I would say Prego is my favorite. My mom does make her own though.
-
Spaghetti sauce!! Gravy (to me) is when you take meat drippings and thicken it with corn starch. Everything else is a sauce. You wouldn't put alfredo gravy over pasta.
-
Here's my opinion on this question. I'm of half Italian descent and as I politely argued with my dad who's fbi (full blooded Italian) LOL! Here in America we celebrate Thanksgiving and usually top our mashed potatoes with a brown substance that we call gravy and refer to red pasta sauce as sauce. In Italy, they don't celebrate our Thanksgiving so to them, pasta sauce is gravy. I'm not trying to do away with old customs or traditions but I believe that when in America, you should uphold our traditions, this is not the old country.
