Title: Backyard Chickens
Post by: cadence4u on July 23, 2020, 09:52:32 am
I have raise chicken for their eggs for many years! Just recently got some new baby chicks!

I heard the back yard chicken are on the rise! With many people are laid off from work, they
are getting baby chickens to raise.

There are several different chickens you can get!  https://www.google.com/search?q=baby+breed+chicken&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwioq43H6uPqAhUzFjQIHamnCZAQ_AUoAnoECA4QBA&biw=1903&bih=880

That sounds kind of fun to me, I wish I had the yard for it. With whatever it costs to care for the chickens, is it any savings compared to buying eggs?

For some reason, raising chickens is illegal within the city limits of our town.  I love chickens.

lots of my friends raise chickens and they love it!
I am not a chicken person plus i live in a condo.
When she stopped she really missed them but shortly after she realized how much time she spent taking care of them. They were very time consuming. :rainbow: :peace:

It is still cheaper to just buy eggs.  If you have chickens you need a place to them to live.  Unless you live in the country far from others you have to keep them corralled. You can't just let them run loose.  So you need a coop and a fenced in area.  You also have to buy food for them.

Because you live in the city limits.  Most places it is illegal to have farm animals inside the city limits.  I have some neighbors a few houses down that have chickens or they use to.  I use to hear a rooster but have not in a while.  Got a lot of new neighbors in the area and somebody may have complained.  I think you can have chickens in the city limits (on your own property) but not a rooster.  I have another neighbor that just got a goat.   That probably is not legal either but he keeps in on his property so I don't see what difference it makes.  I thought about seeing if I could borrow it so I did not have to mow. LOL

Kudos to those of you that are able to do chickens.  It is more than I am able to do.  I just like to grow veggies

One of my grandsons tried it for a while and ended up hating chickens. He says they're really mean.

I used to think it might be fun but I've changed my mind about that.  :turkey:

I use to have chickens and they were a lot of fun, they take lots of time and you have to buy feed for them.  Eggs are cheaper, once we get another dog we will get chicken again.

Used to have them in my neighborhood  and could hear the rooster all day long! ( fallacy that they only crow in the AM ) but haven't heard them in awhile, maybe it died!

Depends on the chicken. My niece had a couple she carried around like a puppy.

My friend owns some chickens sys its a great way to save on eggs. Idk to be honest. I guess it could be but depending on the type of eggs you buy it could be. Eggs average from a good amount of range of prices. Guess it be cheaper depending on what you already get

Two people in our neighborhood have tried to petitioned for our homeowner's association to allow chickens to be raised within the neighborhood. The effort was met with a resounding "no". The homeowner's association runs a tight ship and is one of the reasons why we moved to this area. The thought of hearing roosters crow at early hours of the morning (even though I wake up before roosters) and the clucking of chickens was not pleasant. Chickens would also attract more predators to our neighborhood and we have already seen a large number of small cats and dogs disappearing. We have a fair amount of open space that provides romping grounds for coyotes, raccoons, skunks, owls, hawks and occasionally eagles, mountain lions, bears and a moose was spotted once.

If i was more geared towards self sufficiency I'd take a hack at having chickens. That way I would not have to pay the god awful high prices at the stores. Some of those prices are criminal & some of the so called cage free  companies are not cage free at all they just put that on there egg boxes so they could sell them at a higher price

Where I live you can have chickens as long as you have the right set-up for them.  You are also limited to a certain number.  I don't know much beyond this information as I have no interest whatsoever!  Luckily, no one in my neighborhood as tried this (I think you have to have a certain amount of property also), because I am not sure whether it would be okay or a nuisance.

I'd love to have backyard chickens someday. My cousin does the same. Even named one of her chickens Britney Spears, lmao.

Raising chickens is not fun.  I was raised on a farm and it wasn't fun at all.
