Title: Diabetic Cat
Post by: Nancy5 on October 05, 2020, 12:47:29 pm
My one fur baby was gaining a lot of weight lately, but eating the same as before, and was always drinking.  So  off to the vet we went.  After some tests we found he’s diabetic.  I’ve had all of medical issues with all my pets, but this is a new one.  It’s good I can give shots, one of my babies is allergic to tons of things and i have to give an allergy shot twice a week.  So after a meeting with the vet I’m home with a meter, test strips, insulin, and needles.  Wish me luck!

Aww.. I hope your fur baby gets well. My cat only gains weight in certain parts of his body which I find odd. He's very long. active, and not lethargic at all. He sheds normally it appears and his appetite has gotten bigger. I haven't taken him to the vet in a very long time. I feel as if my cat has allergies as well. Good Luck with your cats health!

Do you mean you have to give your cat insulin shots? How are you going to get the cat to sit still enough for you to do that? Did the vet teach you how to do that?

It is not that hard. How does a vet get them to "sit still" ?  They don't.  They hold them down and do it.  Same with cats that have to take meds.  They don't cooperate.  You have to hold them and just do it.

Yes, he gets 2 shots a day.  I also have a cat that gets 1 shot of allergy meds once a week.  Like CG said you get the shot ready I put the cat on the bar in my kitchen, hold them down and give the shot.  That is really easy to do, the hard part of the diabetic cat will be the testing.  I have a meter and strips and a another type of needle.  I must stick the needle in the inside of his ear, *bleep* it to draw blood, put the strip on the blood and insert meter to get his number!

Take good care of your fur baby.  Pets get the same illnesses as people and it can sometimes be time consuming but we do what we have to do.

You can also put the cat in the floor and straddle him under your legs. Not really putting weight on it but helps to hold the cat in place.  I have had to do that.  I am sure you will catch a lot of flack for spending the kind of money you will have to in order to keep the cat alive. But I would do the same thing.  I personally think a shot would be easier to do that a pill.

I have also used the straddle approach, that works well too.  You are 100% right Countrygirl, i am sure I will get flack over the cost.  The way I look at it, it’s my money and until the day comes when I ask you for money keep your opinions and criticism to yourself.  And CG I’m so happy that you are an animal lover too!

I spent quite a bit on a dog a couple years ago. And a "good friend" made some pretty negative comments. He will still throw it in my face if he gets mad at me.  Like you said it was MY money!  I am glad you are able to take care of your cat. I am not sure I could give mine shots.  But I have done other stuff I never thought I could do.  They are family.

I’m sure you could do it.  If your pet needed it or would die without it, I know you would do it.  I never thought I could give my cat a allergy shot every week, but I did.  I also had to give a few of my pets over the years fluids.  An IV bag and a tube with a needle you insert, open the bad and the fluid enters the pet.  Did that to about 5 of my pets over the years.  It’s hard in the beginning but you get used to it.

We did give a dog an IV about a year ago. We have a good friend that is an EMT and he came and started the IV.

Your cats are lucky to have you as their fur Mom.  I'm not sure I could give shots and the treatments you have to.

Like Nancy said, you probably could. If you love them you would be surprised at what you can do.

Countrygirl is right.  I never though I could do the things I have done (shots, sticking needle into cat’s ear to draw blood for insulin test, giving fluids from IV bag, etc); but I love my pets and if I won’t/can’t do it they will die.  My husband will help, but not do the things.  I’m positive if you had a pet who needed something jkhanson, you could/would do it.  You can be surprised at things you can do. 😁
