Off-Topic / Re: Think you could live off $5 a day?
« on: February 26, 2013, 09:01:20 pm »Message ID: 694261
I've read a couple of articles where officials have took the $5 a day challenge. This is the allotted amount for people who receive food stamps (a family of 4). Wow, that's nothing. Yeah, there are people who don't want to work and want "to live off the system" but there are people who losttheir job and honestly need to receive help until they get back on their feet. Has anyone tried this?

Assuming you are saying the entire family of 4 receives a total allotment of $5.00 a day for food only  (averaging $150.00 a month)--I'd say it is doable if one is diligent to shop and buy only what is on sale, use coupons and be willing and able to shop at multiple stores that offer the best prices.  It takes a lot of time, organizing, planning and cooking practically everything from scratch.  Also, having some creative skills in the kitchen help when you may have to eat chicken or beans for a month straight. lol. We have never been on food stamps but things have been so tight the past few years that my husband and I turned this into a team effort to make sure our family of 5 has been well fed with healthy foods and not junk.

It would be interesting if these officials are also trying to feed their own families of 4 with the $5.00 a day challenge and how long would they be willing or able to do it for before cracking?  It's one thing to do it for a day, a week or a month but to do it for the long haul is another story.

Debate & Discuss / Re: smoking
« on: February 25, 2013, 11:04:37 pm »Message ID: 693719
do you think people should or shouldnt smoke in fast food places

No, I don't think people should smoke in any enclosed building as it forces everyone else to inhale the smoke too.  Even when I was a smoker, I felt nauseated by the heavy smell of smoke in places when it was legal to do so and was so glad when it was banned.

It doesn't "force" everyone else to inhale the smoke. If you don't want to inhale the smoke then you have the right to simply leave. It should be up to the owner of the property to determine whether or not they allow people to smoke and not the government. Places like restaurants are not public buildings, they are privately owned by individuals. If you hate cigarette smoke (as I do) then the simply avoid places that allow it and looks for places that ban it and take your business there.

I agree with you that the choice should have been up to the owners of the buildings or businesses and not the government. With enough consumer pressure it could have been possible that many establishments would have voluntarily gone smoke free indoors and still make some type of provision for their smoking customers as well. That aside, when permitted inside an establishment, everyone there is "forced" to inhale the smoke. That might include young children and  people who have health issues that cannot physically handle smoke.   I remember the days when people smoked inside grocery stores and hospitals, government buildings and places where the average person couldn't simply find another place to take their business. It was a big problem back then as it was allowed everywhere.

I understand you point of the homepage.  However, I guess my mouth is bitter with the taste of that company that never paid when I did my first cashout, never responded to support ticket requests,  and then of course eventually closed and had no contact whatsoever . . . blah blah blah  Wouldn't copy any thing they did when they failed so miserably and not even an apology, goodbye, kiss my app, nothing . . . just shut down - link doesn't work.

Yep, I signed up for that one and had practically the same experiences. Up and gone without notice taking my earnings with them.  :angry7:
I have to say that FC is the only program that has earned my trust month after month. I've given up on any others for now.

Debate & Discuss / Re: Do you think home school is better than pubilc school? If so, why?
« on: February 12, 2013, 10:34:08 pm »Message ID: 687454
My daughter has a learning disability and is really struggling at school.  My husband and I have decided to do an at-home online school.  My mother is very defensive about my daughter's disabilty so she is very unhappy with me.  I feel it will give my daughter more one on one time to help with her grades.  Am I really that bad of a mother for taking her out of public school? :'(

I think that you are a very good mom and you know your child best.  Unfortunately, doing the best for our children sometimes means making unpopular decisions.  I highly respect parents who homeschool.  My husband's family has negative views toward homeschooling.

I agree. I am sure you and your husband know your daughter and what would be best for her more than any other person. Ultimately the choice is your husbands and yours to make when it comes to deciding what is best for your child and mother should not be involved in that decision.

All three of my children chose to home school  and have done very well with it. My MIL from my first marriage was very upset with me at first and even considered trying to gain custody of my daughter because she thought I was committing a crime by homeschooling...lol.  Eventually she got over it after she and other family members took a closer look at the advantages of homeschooling.

It has not always been an easy road.  There are pros and cons with it like anything else but in comparison to the public school system today, it is far superior imo. I don't regret our choice for a minute and I don't think you will either.

Debate & Discuss / Re: Is it racism to.....

Just wondering if it could be considered racism to vote for someone of the same race simply because they are of the same race?

Yes, most definitely.  To vote for someone simply because they are the same race would be racist.
