i think it's fine.
the only things i would change would be to:
  • make the font normal size instead of large (everything seems to be larger than on current site, like 14pt or higher fonts?). Alot of us aren't vision-impaired and don't need/want large fonts. It makes everything take up more space on the page. If people need larger fonts, their browser has the option to zoom to make them larger.
  • have the "recent posts" under my account changed to "my posts" and show my posts there with a link to the forum in the main menu above next to my account. Forums are community, not personal so I don't understand why it's under my account in the first place. If someone wanted to go straight to forums, they shouldn't have to click through my account.

If your family is christian then part of christianity is accepting and loving everyone regardless of what race they are and what beliefs they have.
Don't go with them to church just to please them, this will help you avoid the community they've tried to rally against you.
Just let them know that their refusal to accept you for who you are is straining your relationship and making it difficult for you to be around them.
Hopefully they're mature enough to understand that and quit hassling you.

glad that helped :)

if you don't want to spend the money on a footlocker you can get one of those big long tupperware-like storage containers and place that under the bed, but you won't be able to lock it. or you can find a footlocker/trunk on ebay/craigslist. It really helped alot to have snacks around, plus I stored cans/bottles in there too, I also put them beside the trunk under the bed if the trunk was too full of snacks.

As for cooking, some dorms have a central kitchen that you can use in the dorm to cook/bake things. My dorm didn't allow hotplates, only microwaves, but in the middle of the dorm there was a kitchen that we used if we wanted to bake a cake or lasagna. Just make sure whatever cooking appliances you get for your room are allowed and you'll have room for.

Another thing you might want is a small first aid kit, or at least a box of variety sized bandages and some antibacterial cream. So you wont have to head all the way to the nurse if you get a minor cut, a minor burn from cooking, or if you fall and scrape yourself. Walmart offers these in the health area, over in the dorm stuff, and over in the camping section. Walgreens also has some.

Another thing: Power strip with surge protection and possibly an extension cord, outlets are usually in inconvienent places, and if you decide to rearrange your room you might need that extension cord. And if you're using a desktop computer, a cable cord that is 10'-12' (my room didn't come with one and didn't offer WiFi back then).

The only other thing I can think of is hangers. My suitemate (our rooms were joined by a bathroom) forgot to bring some on that first day because she'd folded everything into a suitecase and boxes, luckily for her, my roommate had brought too many and was able to share.

Off-Topic / Re: ONLINE COLLEGE or TRADITIONAL COLLEGE
« on: September 13, 2011, 02:04:11 pm »Message ID: 416778
it doesn't really matter which kind of school it is as long as it is accredited an employer will accept it.
the reason why people are reporting they aren't getting jobs is either a) nobody is hiring anyone regardless of schooling or b) they didnt investigate the school before they paid them money to see if they had any accredidation, or c) a combination of those 2 things

the ones that are accredited online are also eligible for federal financial aid, in addition to any financial aid the school might offer you.

So if you decide to go the online route, which honestly is more flexible and a better option if you prefer to work at your own pace, do your research on the school first. The ones that have accreditation always note all of their certifications, and the ones that aren't will make sure not to mention it anywhere on the website (and not provide any real numbers about how many of their "graduates" actually get jobs)

an online school that isn't accreditated and scammed me: Stratford Career Institute  (they also won't refund)

online schools that are accreditated:
WGU
University of Phoenix
Ashford University
Devry University
Walden University
grand canyon university

pctools offers several free programs to help you protect your computer and I've used all the pay ones before, these free ones have worked better and been less annoying for me.

Off-Topic / Re: facebook or twitter?
« on: September 12, 2011, 05:51:44 pm »Message ID: 416437
neither. Both just distract you from actually living your life and noticing your surroundings. And people end up sharing way too much info on the internet.
it's like that commercial where the guy is always on his phone to the point where he's not noticing his life is passing him by.

facebook sucks you in and tempts you with life-draining games and apps.
twitter tempts you to update everyone about everything going on in your life or saying things you should never say out loud.
both can lead you to being scammed or have your information stolen or get stalked because of all the information people post about themselves on both. "oh hey im on vacation for a week come rob my house which i've already shown you pics of and told you essentially where I live and where I work"

people also put answers to security questions on both of those. For instance, your bank accounts online ask you to pick and answer certain security questions like "what was the name of your first pet" or "where did you go to school" or "where did you meet your spouse"...and bad people can get ahold of that info just by looking at your page. You make it even easier if you post up your email address that you also use for your bank accounts.

Off-Topic / Re: what doyou say when someone thinks they know everything
« on: September 12, 2011, 05:45:56 pm »Message ID: 416434
My dad was like that. Even if I showed him documented proof he was wrong about something, he was still right. So I got to the point where I would just say "whatever you say" or I'd roll my eyes at him and say nothing.

As for friends, you can choose how much you want to communicate with them, if at all. So if she asks for advice again just say "well what do you think" and if she says she wants your input just tell her you have none and try to change the subject. If shes one of those where only her issues matter and she won't talk to you about anything else (like about your life) even if shes not following your advice at all, then she's just wanting someone to tell her she's right all the time and listen to her talk.
That means she's not a friend and you're wasting your time and just frustrating yourself keeping her in your life.

My sister is christian and I am agnostic, we just don't talk about religion.
I have friends that are religious and friends that aren't, we have discussions about things but try not to let them go too far so nobody gets offended.
I think just letting people know you don't want to discuss religion might help your situation. Like for me, if someone starts talking about religion I tell them "there are only two things I won't talk about: politics and religion, because neither conversation ends well"
Because even two people who are the same religion can argue about different parts of their religion. Just as two people who are the same political party can argue about different aspects of it.

If they insist on talking about it with you, change the topic or stop speaking with them. Also, try not to wear things that will obviously offend someone like "christianity is stupid" or whatever lol It's like an invitation to start a conversation about it.

olivia is my favorite.
I have too many favorite episodes to list just one.
I think the episode where the girl put famous men to sleep then stole their sperm and tried to get money out of them was one of my top faves.
The one where olivia was undercover in prison is another favorite.

I agree with what Annella said, although the cooking part might be a bit unnecessary depending on if you're paying for the school's meal plan or not.

If you're a heavy sleeper, make sure your alarm clock will wake the dead lol My original one didn't wake me up in time for highschool classes, so my mom and I went in search of a much louder one. So every morning it would scare me to make sure I got up on time.

In addition to the above, I also had a footlocker (from target) and placed it under my bed, in the footlocker would be all sorts of dry goods like crackers, snacks, sodas, waterbottles, etc. And since it had a lock I could keep my roommates out of it lol But they were always begging for something to snack on.
You can restock that either in one grocery trip, or each time you visit home.

As for tools, I also bought a cheap rechargeable drill. This helped us install things like shelves, a bookcase, etc. And when you move out you can either buy something to fill the holes in the walls, or use toothpaste. Also make sure to have a flashlight in case of power outage or night walks.

You might also be required to keep your room clean especially if there is a bathroom attached to it (we had to), so you should make sure that you buy an all-purpose cleaner, and a light vacuum -- we bought a rechargeable one for less than $20 at target.

If you're able to take a tour of the dorm rooms before moving in, it would help you figure out what you'll need. Like, will you need a mirror? Does it come with a microwave/fridge already? Will you need storage space? A way to divide the room so there's privacy? Make sure to take actual notes during that tour of what you might need.

This was 10 years ago for me. Prices of things should have gone down, and most colleges should now be offering virtual tours on their websites of the dorm rooms.

Oh, and make sure that if you're going to/from your dorm room at night that you're either with a friend, or that the path is well-lit. Our college had campus security that would patrol up and down the only path from the dorms to the classes at night on a golfcart to make sure us girls made it back to our rooms safely.

that's true monnee.
as much as i like having it sunny most of the time here in cali, it's too hot. I visited washington/oregon this month and it didn't get warmer than 75 and only rained for a few minutes. was so much nicer there.
there was this show on i think the history channel that showed what the earth is going to look like over the next thousand years if we keep going the way we have been with pollution/destroying the planet. was a very interesting show. I wish the people in the government would watch that and stop making stupid decisions about what we're doing with our planet.

Off-Topic / Re: Where were you on 911 ten years ago?
« on: September 12, 2011, 05:08:17 pm »Message ID: 416411
it wasn't even 6am here in cali yet. I was in college, in my dorm room asleep and the phone rang.
i got up to answer it, it was my roommate's mom crying telling me to wake her up and turn on the news.
i woke her up, turned on our tv and she called her mom back and we both sat there shocked and confused watching, then the second tower was hit and we both said it wasn't an accident.
my mom called me from work to tell me she was worried they might attack LA (which I wasn't in, but close to) but I wasn't worried as much as she was.

we sat there like that until 730, watching different stations listening to what they all had to say, our RA showed up at 7 knocking on everyone's doors telling us the school was having a meeting before lunch (for prayers, counseling, etc) and that we still had to go to our classes today to at least check-in.
So at 730 half of our dorm walked quietly up to the classrooms, but my professor didn't show up for us to check-in until after 8 because she was frantically trying to contact her relatives in NY to make sure they were ok but the phone lines were jammed. Since it was sociology class, she actually had us stay and talk about it. Then after class my roommates and I grabbed breakfast and headed back to our room to watch more news. That friday the entire school did candlelight vigils on street corners throughout town.

The events of that day will always be with me, even though I suffered no personal loss, it was a very historic and shocking day. As my professor pointed out, it was like the day she was in school and heard Kennedy had been killed.

FusionCash / Re: Just curious, why do all surveys ask if you are Hispanic?
« on: September 12, 2011, 04:56:13 pm »Message ID: 416407
It is the fastest growing demographic population in the U.S. Companies have realized that they do have buying power and can help make or break a product line. So they have found the need to listen to their opinions. They ask about gender, race and age also to ensure they are getting a good cross sample of the population. The opinion are of a elderly white women is going to be different then that of a 20-something hispanic male who has 3 kids.

^^this is the answer to your question. It may or may not be a qualifier, but they are very interested in finding people who fit that demographic for the reason Phx said.
