Off-Topic / ScrewAttack - DEATH BATTLE
« on: February 26, 2015, 05:59:19 pm »Message ID: 962496
Anyone watch? I've seen a couple, currently watching their live Twitch stream, with old never before seen "pilot" and a Q and A.
If you watch, what's your favorite battle? Any battle that you disagree with the outcome of? ;)

(Can be found on the screwattack website or youtube, for those that want to look it up. Obviously, Death Battle is what you'd expect - who would win in a fight to the death between cartoon/comic/video game characters lol)

Off-Topic / Town of Salem
« on: February 12, 2015, 12:40:32 pm »Message ID: 959041
Anyone play this game? It's a free flash game, based on the party game "Mafia" (and variations).

Town of Salem - a game of murder, deception, lying and mob hysteria

http://www.blankmediagames.com/

^ that's the website, though you can also find it on Facebook and Steam.

It's pretty fun, although since you are playing with real people, you can run into cheaters, racists, gamethrowers, trolls and just frustratingly bad players.  ::)
But when they're in the minority or you get a good group going, it can be quite addicting to play!

Plus it's all a bunch of MIND GAMES XD

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nw8A9FVAzPw

"Nothing bad ever happens in this town! Nothing bad ever happens in this town!
But when the town goes to sleep, you can hear the sound of something devious, of something quite mysterious, lurking in the dark..."
 :pumpkin: :cat:

Anyways, if you play, wanna be friends?  :highfive:
What's your favorite / most hated role?

Off-Topic / Ever think of going off into the woods and being a hermit?
« on: February 11, 2015, 10:25:06 am »Message ID: 958783
Just saw this article posted by a FB friend:
http://www.theplaidzebra.com/hermit-survived-for-27-years-in-the-woods/

Kinda interesting, though as someone mentioned, thievery isn't anything to be proud of or admire.

Also take note, this guy was in MAINE for his winters! :snowman: :o

Off-Topic / Struggling with poverty

No stalkers hunt me down, but thought I'd share a local news story with you guys.
http://m.thesalemnewsonline.com/mobile/news/article_f023a66e-b130-11e4-89a6-e730be7ec6de.html#.VNo8_OyMkMc.facebook

Anyone have any thoughts on ways to help? How do you help others, if you can?

This is really sad to me, both because this is local and because I know there are places that try to help. For example there are two churches that give out free clothes and small toys to anyone who wants them and the food pantry gives out a box of food with a proper full (or nearly) week's worth of meals monthly. Which I suppose isn't helpful at all if you can't drive to pick the stuff up nor have anywhere to cook or store food.

I'm not sure what else is available but maybe this quote from the article helps to explain some too:
Quote
Says Richardson: “I can describe the mindset of people living in poverty with one word, ‘fear.’ … When someone has no hope it’s like carrying deadweight, and they’re not even capable of helping themselves. It’s like a paramedic responding to an unconscious person. You can’t expect them to let the medic know what happened, or to help the situation. But once you give people hope, they wake up and their whole outlook changes on the future. Then it’s that much easier to begin helping people out of poverty.”

Off-Topic / How much do you spend a day on food?
« on: January 23, 2015, 12:17:17 pm »Message ID: 953358
Just browsing links and clicked on a bit with a free cookbook for meals based around eating on $4 a day. Link here: http://www.leannebrown.com/

Which reminded me of this guy who ate on $1 (plus coupons): http://www.grocerycouponguide.com/articles/eating-well-on-1-a-day/

So, curious, how much would you say you spend on food everyday, per person?

Off-Topic / More than chicken
« on: January 22, 2015, 12:03:05 pm »Message ID: 953086
So I found this article:
http://zesterdaily.com/cooking/battle-of-the-birds/

It's just someone's blog post where they try pheasant, guinea fowl, cornish game hen, squab, and quail, in an effort to broaden their culinary sights past chicken.

Has anyone else tried some game birds or exotic meats? Ostrich, emu, partridge, songbird, whatever that isn't chicken or turkey (or duck/geese, but even those are kinda rare, aren't they?)

How about raising them? Anyone have experience to share? :D Kinda something I'm toying with, even if they aren't quite as productive or easy as the tried and true chicken.

Offers / Weird 90 cent Samplicious Electronics "Survey"
« on: January 22, 2015, 11:06:07 am »Message ID: 953077
It took me to Veylinx to register and bid on an auction. You can bid 0. Confirm your email, get the 90 cents. It wasn't a survey, at all really, but it was super fast and easy. Bit weird, but worthwhile!

Off-Topic / TV Show - Forever
« on: January 15, 2015, 05:25:10 am »Message ID: 951241
Anyone else watch it? Tuesdays on ABC (or Hulu the week after airdate). Currently has 13 episodes aired.

I dunno, ever since Torchwood/Captain Jack from Doctor Who, I've quite liked immortals :P (Also Burn Gorman plays a role!)

Add to that the main character does the Sherlock thing, but without being mean to people (ok, he's a bit cold to his co-worker, but that's just personality differences, not on purpose, and no one takes offense).

My brother says he turns it on, because he likes the main character's voice lol So people who like smooth British voices might want to tune in just for that as well.

I also love the family stuff. I love it when it's flashback, I love it when it's current with his adopted 70+? year old son (also I quite like Judd Hirsch).

Really all the characters are nice including the minor ones, if not focused on much. Anyways I don't sit there mad because it's not focused on the main guy (unlike some shows), I actually like seeing the few bit scenes of them too.

In short, it's totally charmed me.

If you don't watch, uhm. Well my sister tells me it has terrible ratings, so I'm bracing myself to be satisfied with just the one season. At least it's a full season, the back nine was already ordered on it.

Personally, I'd recommend it anyways. It's pretty light popcorn fare. And he surprisingly doesn't die too much, and for a crime show focusing on a medical examiner, it's not really gory. For the most part, there's just opening dead bodies up and pulling out parts occasionally. :P

I don't want to spoil anything more in the first post but I totally would talk about it, if anyone else watches!

Off-Topic / Fruit Cake! Have you ever actually tried it?
« on: December 25, 2014, 04:41:00 am »Message ID: 945519
I don't think I've ever actually tried fruit cake. I've heard the jokes about it of course. And looking at the recipes, well, I'm not really an alcohol drinker, so didn't appeal that much to me in the past.
But I found a fruit cake recipe yesterday - literally cake with dried fruit in it - so I baked one  ;D I'll report tonight how it tasted. Crossing my fingers I didn't mess it up.
 :snowman:
Anyone have any fruit cake recipes they enjoy? Or horror stories :P Feel free to post jokes or whatever too. lol

Off-Topic / Do You Buy - Digital Game Bundles?
« on: December 10, 2014, 08:55:18 am »Message ID: 942056
I feel a bit "slow" but I've only recently started paying attention to these game bundle things.
They're all online digital, but basically you pay from $1 to $6 (usually) for 4-10 games. Yeah, a lot of the time you just want one game and the rest are poo, but even if you only played the one, it's a pretty massive discount for a game.
Or so I think.
(Also you can apparently trade the digital games, so long as you haven't installed them on their particular drm [steam/origin/desura/whatever I know some game lingo!] so that's an option for games you won't play?)

I'm almost sad I didn't start paying attention sooner - almost, because we all know how pennies add up :P

Anyways, has anyone here in the past purchased these bundled games? Off of sites like humblebundle.com I mean, not generally a store bundle.

Off-Topic / Returning to FC
« on: April 01, 2013, 10:10:22 am »Message ID: 713782
For whatever reason, I fell off doing FC. But I'm going to try and get back into the habit :)
Any stuff changed or added I should be aware of? It's been about half a year since I've been here  :-[
I see a radio-thingy that's new right off the bat. And what's this about calling customer service or something and earning I saw someone mention?
Anything else that's new and *must do* worthy?

Off-Topic / "so let's do it like they do on the Discovery Channel"
« on: June 23, 2012, 05:25:07 pm »Message ID: 559528
Artwork from this lovely person: http://humon.deviantart.com/
All based on reality, on real animals and nature.
Just thought they were fun, I like animals, so thought I'd share.

Most of these were sent around on Tumblr with this description:
"For anyone who only sees gender and sex in black and white, here’s proof by the lovely humon that nature is just as fluid with representations of gender and sex as we are."

(Not included is that bonobos have sex face to face like humans, and even kiss with tongues.)

The reasons for the human figures? In her own words:
"I love the weird and wonderful mating rituals of animals. I'll illustrate them with these human looking figures because part of the fun is to imagine if humans did the same."

There's more, she even has a small book available: http://manalanextdoor.com/shop/animal-mating

But for now I'll just leave off with this last image ;) (same artist)

Off-Topic / Daily Email Quote - An opportunity to help
« on: June 12, 2012, 08:13:21 am »Message ID: 552131
My daily email quote (dunno for sure if it's the same for everyone, but writing it out anyways for reference) :

Quote
"Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day."
-- Sally Koch

And it just so happens, that coincidentally, I got an email from the World Food Program to match donations (so it would be double the donated amount) for feeding malnourished children and pregnant/nursing mothers in Africa.

(From "Free Rice", which is an online trivia game where you can "earn" food to be donated as well.)

Just, you know, the coincidence made me smile.

And writing about it now allows me to point out to anyone who reads this the foundation:  https://www.wfp.org/donate/sahel-freerice
All donations made through June 15th will be matched!

Off-Topic / Float Trip
« on: May 21, 2012, 08:52:22 pm »Message ID: 541084
Went on a float trip down the river yesterday. Two canoes, two boats, and a couple floaters. Sadly, we're apparently terribly terribly slow. What was supposed to be a two or three hour float took us around eight hours lol - didn't get to the end till 10:00 at night - couldn't see a darn thing at the end.
My brother is upset with himself, because it's the second float trip that has ended this way (although at least we reached our destination - the first time we stopped at a campsite and got a ride).
But hey, it's fun up to the point of the sun setting :P Still, I think next time I'll sneak a flashlight - just in case lol
Plus, this time, I didn't flip! Of course, most of the time I wasn't in a boat :P ::)

Just a bit sad we missed the eclipse, oh well.

Anyone else play on the river?

Off-Topic / You're always ten to your older siblings
« on: May 17, 2012, 11:47:15 am »Message ID: 538955
My twin and younger brother were discussing an old movie my brother had recently watched and my twin said she hadn't seen it in a long time - "probably before I was even your age".
Our brother is five years younger than us.
My twin meant when she was around seven (or pre-ten years old anyways).
Just thought it was an "lol" moment.

(When reminded of his actual age, she went "no you're not" as well, just as icing on the funny cake.)
