Debate & Discuss / Gift Cards ?- Son's Birthday 9/18 - need to decide today
« on: September 13, 2014, 08:09:48 am »Message ID: 917406
I'm trying to decide whether to give my grown son a gift card for his upcoming birthday 9/18.  That's what I've been resorting to lately it seems.     :present:

I'm not asking what I should give him - just how do you feel about receiving a gift card as a gift?  Especially from a parent or other close family member?  Sometimes I feel it's the lazy way out but there are so many benefits.  What do you all think? :confused1:

Debate & Discuss / Thought I was signing up to be a secret shopper- Attention this could be CRIME
« on: April 19, 2014, 01:36:44 pm »Message ID: 871867
This is too bizarre for words.  I think I've inadvertantly become involved in some kind of money laundering scheme.  I signed up for what I thought was a secret shopper, was "hired" and today received a check for almost $3000 that I'm supposed to deposit then send money to someone in the Philippines.  I am reporting the whole thing to the Office of the Attorney General.  Probably can't reach anyone until Monday.
This is totally weird.
Has anyone else ever encountered anything like this?  (this is NOT one of the "oh I need help" from a Nigerian prince kind of things.")
I have a REAL check in my hand.   EVIDENCE!!! lol

Off-Topic / Read any Good Books Lately?
« on: February 15, 2014, 06:24:50 pm »Message ID: 851366
I've been so busy lately reading material in my field that I haven't done a lot of "just for fun" reading. BUT I picked up Faithful Place by Tana French and can not put it down.  It has everything!  Plot, suspense, multi layered interesting characters, atmosphere - takes place in Dublin - extremely gripping and well written. Have I piqued your interest????

Off-Topic / Determining Credibility of Online Friends- Modified to Include Original Comment
« on: December 07, 2013, 09:32:36 pm »Message ID: 826705
Short of becoming a complete skeptic, how does one determine the credibility of people they meet online?  What clues would there be early on?
I was reluctant initially to include the following but am more comfortable now having been reassured it is not that unusua.l So I will add what I originally wrote:

Has anybody ever been involved in an online relationship that lasted for years?  Sorry to say I was.  At first it was fun and I became very attached.  He was very attractive and sweet and clever and I was quite vulnerable and naive (and gullible) and I found myself doing and saying things that were wayyyyy out of character.  I knew from the beginning it wasn't ever going to go anywhere.   We both had other commitments and there were other factors as well. We came close to getting together once last summer but it  turned out I sabotaged it subconsciously.  I finally realized it was all a facade and he was pretty much a loser and a liar.  But it's taking some regular therapy for me to get my head back on straight because I was head over heels for awhile.  Interesting period in my life.  But I feel foolish for having been so gullible.  Please tell me I'm not alone for having been so stupid.

Off-Topic / Anybody Making Items to Sell in a Holiday Boutique?
« on: November 20, 2013, 06:57:56 pm »Message ID: 820233
I was invited to participate in an Open Studio/Boutique that will feature items suitable for holiday gift giving. In addition to designing and making my trademark earrings I am making mixed media collaged art cards.  They will be suitable for framing but will be in the form of a 5 by 7 greeting card.  Figure these should sell for under $10.

Any ideas ?  I am looking to stay in the realm of watercolor/mixed media/fiber art.  And quick to make jewelry.
I have no idea what the "go to" item is this year.  ?????

Debate & Discuss / Healthy Grains - Quinoa
« on: October 09, 2013, 10:08:51 pm »Message ID: 804152
For the first time I cooked quinoa - It was very good with a bunch of chopped fresh veggies and cilantro added and I served it cold.
Has anyone else made a dish with quinoa?  Suggestions?    thanks.

Kind of a laid back day here today.  Having friends over later and BBQ.  Working on a couple of projects and making a quick trip to the market in a few minutes.  Just enjoying the feeling of the day!  Happy fourth everybody  :peace:

Debate & Discuss / Best Grocery Deal This Week
« on: June 07, 2013, 12:23:52 pm »Message ID: 748748
Some of you already know to shop here for groceries but 'til now I've only gone to the 99 cent store for other things.
Yesterday I stopped by their produce department that has recently expanded a LOT.
I bought a bag of beautiful red, yellow and orange peppers for 99 cents, a good size bag of yellow onions for 99 cents and 3 bottles of Mrs. Dash Marinade for 99 cents each.  This is the same stuff that I paid 2.79 for at Von's on sale!
I was delighted!  Right now I'm not contributing very much $ to our household and art supplies are expensive so wow it's great to be able to save AND to make some $ here.
btw, I used the peppers for dinner last night and they were delicious!

Debate & Discuss / Board Games - What's Your Favorite?
« on: May 31, 2013, 09:51:08 pm »Message ID: 744773
I love to play board games with the family - especially when we're with our grandchildren ages 16 and 12.  One of my favorites is Balderdash.  It can get very hilarious.  What is the one that you enjoy the most?  Always on the lookout for something new for the family to enjoy!  :)

Off-Topic / Is anyone here a quilter?
« on: April 27, 2013, 03:30:56 pm »Message ID: 727212
Are there any other quilters here?  What kind of quilting do you enjoy?  I started with traditional but mostly do art quilting now. What led me bring up this topic is that I just finished piecing a double wedding ring quilt for a client and it was the hardest fussiest quilt I've ever done.  :BangHead: Especially because I didn't have a pattern and had to unsew the pieces that had been stitched by the person who tried it before me.
But it's done!!!! and oh what a happy dance I'm doing.
If you have pics of your quilts please post them and let us know how to get to see them.  That's something I haven't figured out here yet.  :dontknow:

Off-Topic / What kind of crafts do you enjoy?

I love doing just about anything that lets me be creative.  Mostly it's related to fiber in some way: art quilting, mixed media, knitting.  I've also been designing and selling earrings - instant gratification and they sell better on Etsy too!  :)  What is everybody else into?

Off-Topic / Who Loves Naps?
« on: April 10, 2013, 11:59:10 am »Message ID: 719103
Naps are delicious. I got into the habit of a brief (10 to 20 minute) power nap a few years ago and think they may be even more refreshing than a full night's sleep.  It's like all of a sudden a blanket of fatigue comes over me and I HAVE to lie down for a few minutes. Then wake up and am raring to go for hours. If I'm not home there's no problem missing it but it IS a coveted few minutes.

Off-Topic / What was the most fun thing you've done to make money?
« on: April 06, 2013, 11:18:33 am »Message ID: 717057
When my husband was in school we sold at the swap meet on weekends to make money for groceries. It was hard work - getting up at 4 am, loading the car, setting up tables and hawking our goods all day - often in sweltering weather. But it was great fun too -

Off-Topic / Favorite Quotes, Sayings, Aphorisms to Share

It's hard to come up with a most favorite quote but one of mine is from Wayne Gretzky, the NHL player.
He said:

"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."       I try to think of this whenever I'm afraid to give something a try - whether in my art or personal life.

Is there a saying you have in the back of your mind that helps?
