Off-Topic / When is scary too scary for Halloween?
« on: October 27, 2016, 10:54:42 am »Message ID: 1101080
A couple of years ago we bought a huge spider to add to our halloween decor. It's fluffy, about 3 feet in diameter when the legs are sprawled out, and there is a sensor on it which when triggered by movement, it jumps out at lightening speed and there is a spider noise (which resembles loud critters) that is not so easy on the ears. I thought this would be great to leave on our doorstep to scare the trick or treaters and would add to the whole excitement of the day. For the most part, our visitors loved the spider, but there was one or two occasions when little kiddies got very frightened and so now I don't know whether I should use it at all. For the record, there is a zombie house near to us which has some fantastically awful zombies and undead, creeping across the lawn and so in the scale of things, I don't think our spider is so bad. But what do you think?

Off-Topic / How much homework help do you give your kids?
« on: September 29, 2016, 04:08:33 pm »Message ID: 1095623
Sometimes I question whether I give too much help to my kids regarding their homework. I know some parents do not give any help at all, and I guess the hope there is the kids will learn to take responsibility themselves. I don't disagree with this. However I check both my kids math papers each day and if there are any errors, I ask them to do it again. If it is still wrong, and they can't work out how to do it, I will demonstrate how to find the answer. Do you think I am giving too much help?

Off-Topic / Advertisement!
« on: August 24, 2016, 03:46:04 pm »Message ID: 1087963
I saw an advert on tv last night (during Bachelor in Paradise) which I thought was adorable. Sadly I can't remember the sponsor. It told the story of a little boy who used to play with his dog, a beautiful golden retriever who had started to become old. His new "toy" was a fluffy little lion, and he began to ignore the old and faithful dog. So his dad, noticing that the dog was now being neglected, got on the internet and ordered a fluffy mane for the old dog to wear, so that he resembled a lion. So the old dog was suddenly back in fashion! Does anyone know the sponsor of the advert?

Off-Topic / Pan-handlers! What say you?
« on: July 19, 2016, 09:02:50 pm »Message ID: 1080716
My guess is this is probably a delicate topic, but we were driving in a town about 50 miles away from where we live. It's not really a metropolitan area but there must be more than quarter million residents in comparison to the little town I actually live in, which probably has 20,000 residents. We noticed a pan-handler outside of Best Buy, he was showing a cardboard sign to the passers by, occasionally a driver would stop and give him some money. We finished our shopping, which took another hour or so and then drove back to our small town 50 miles away, only to find the same pan-handler at the exit to the Interstate, presumably wanting to catch the drivers as they arrived home. I was shocked that he'd mananged to get to my home town before we did and that he was pan-handling for hand-outs in a new location - almost as if the first stream had run dry. You can imagine my surprise when he got into a vehicle which was in considerably better shape than my 1995 car, and drove off without a care in the world.

Off-Topic / Heart Valve Replacement
« on: May 08, 2016, 04:42:07 pm »Message ID: 1065599
Last week my mom had a heart valve replacement operation. She is 78. She has been waiting for a while for the operation and was pleased when the day finally arrived. She was in surgery for 3 or 4 hours and then spent much of the next day or so sleeping. There were a couple of hiccups after the operation, namely her heartbeat had gotten out of rhythm twice so they had to shock her heart back into rhythm. The first time this worked, but the second time it didn't so she is now on beater blockers! Slowly but surely she is recovering and today, she finally walked up and down the corridor of the hospital without the aid of a walking frame. I wonder if anybody else has had this operation. What was your recovery like?

Off-Topic / Heart Operation
« on: April 25, 2016, 10:18:56 am »Message ID: 1062188
Today, my mom has had a heart valve replacement operation. She is 78 years old and has been waiting for the operation for a little while. I believe they had to cut through my mom's ribs, stop her heart and temporarily put her on a bypass machine.  I think this is quite a big operation, it took the surgeons 6 hours and she has now come out of surgery. I wondered if anyone has had the same operation. What was your length of recovery time? Did you experience any post-op complications? Any experience or advice would be appreciated.

Off-Topic / Proof of Payment Question
« on: February 03, 2016, 10:31:10 am »Message ID: 1043922
I wonder if anyone can help me. I've finally requested my first "Proof of Payment" $1 bonus but have yet to receive payment. I submitted this request at the beginning of January which was actually November's earnings. Do anyone have any experience of how long it takes for the payment to be approved and credited to your account. I mean do you get credited at the same time as the forum bonus or are they completely unrelated? Does it get credited at the same time each month? Thank you so much for any help.

Off-Topic / After Cancer Success Stories
« on: September 13, 2015, 07:47:26 am »Message ID: 1011088
As our planet becomes more knowledgeable about cancer, I wondered if we could post our success stories here. My father had cancer of his kidney when he was just 28 years old, I was just 2. He had his kidney removed and then remained cancer free for 41 years. His cancer returned to his other kidney and by the time he was 69, it had spread to his other organs so sadly he died. However by then, he had reached nearly 70 years old, he had met all but one of his grandchildren and most importantly, I got to spend a number of decades getting to know the best dad ever!

Off-Topic / Does anybody own a pet turtle?
« on: August 30, 2015, 05:58:48 pm »Message ID: 1007695
My 11 year old son wants a turtle for a pet. He has done much research on the internet and has heard mixed reports on how easy they are to keep. He has learned some of the pitfalls of owning a turtle, but as I have never owned one myself, and neither has my husband, I would be interested to hear any good or bad stories from anyone who currently owns, or has previously owned, a turtle. If we do this, I want to be well informed!
