Off-Topic / Happy World Poetry Day
« on: March 21, 2017, 09:15:05 am »Message ID: 1130693
Happy World Poetry Day! I love poetry and have so many favorite poems and poets but here's a fun one I learned early on...

LISTEN TO THE MUSTN'TS
Shel Silverstein, from Where the Sidewalk Ends.

Listen to the MUSTN'TS, child,
      Listen to the DON'TS
      Listen to the SHOULDN'TS
The IMPOSSIBLES, the WONT'S
      Listen to the NEVER HAVES
Then listen close to me-
      Anything can happen, child,
ANYTHING can be.

Do you have a favorite to share?

Off-Topic / Cute Short Story: A Man and His Dog
« on: August 25, 2016, 04:17:30 pm »Message ID: 1088214
A cute short story that was shared with me and I wanted to pass along... :dog:

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that his faithful dog had been dead for many years. He wondered where the road was leading them. After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. As he reached the wall, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch, and the street that led to the gate made from pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.
When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"
"This is heaven, sir," the man answered.
"Wow! Would you happen to have some water? We have traveled far," the man said.
"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up."
The man gestured, and the gate began to open.
"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.
"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."

The man thought a moment, remembering all the years this dog remained loyal to him and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going. After another long walk he came to a plain dirt road, which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.
"Excuse me!" he called to the reader. "Do you have any water? We have traveled far."
"Yes, sure, there's a faucet over there." The man pointed to a place that couldn't be seen from outside the gate. "Come on in and help yourself."
"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to his dog.
"There should be a bowl by the faucet; he is welcome to share."
They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned faucet with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree waiting for them.
"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.
"This is heaven," was the answer.
"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was heaven, too."

"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell."
"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"
"No. We're just happy that they screen out the folks who'd leave their best friends behind in exchange for material things."

Simone Biles is AMAZING!!!  :) I have loved watching her compete in every event. I'm so happy Team USA won the team competition and she was so brilliant in the all around. I just knew she would get the Gold...and she did.
Gymnastic event finals start Sunday, August 14th and I'll be cheering her on.

What did you think of Simone Biles performance?

PS: If you don't follow the Olympics here is a great profile on her...http://www.nbcolympics.com/news/who-simone-biles

Would you rather be the first person to explore a planet or be the inventor of a drug that cures a deadly disease and why?

Off-Topic / Do you have a favorite documentary?
« on: July 28, 2016, 06:29:55 am »Message ID: 1082028
I love to watch documentaries and really good ones provide insight and enrich the dialogue on important/interesting topics. A few of my favorites include SuperSize Me, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, Making a Murderer, Frozen Planet, and 3 ½ Minutes, Ten Bullets (to name a few).

Do you have a favorite documentary? Is there a documentary that really changed the way you thought about something?

If you could be an Olympic athlete, in what sport would you compete? You could think about this based on your strengths or just what you dream about.

I love Rhythmic Gymnastics so that would be the sport I would compete in, in my dreams of course ;).

Off-Topic / Top Misspelled Word by State
« on: May 27, 2016, 07:25:59 am »Message ID: 1069054
In honor of the spelling bee (those words were tough) I saw a report about the top misspelled words by state according to google.

Do you agree with these words? I always have to watch writing/typing definitely versus defiantly but that wasn't the top misspelled word for my state. Do you find yourself typing into google..."How do I spell...."

« on: May 25, 2016, 05:43:07 am »Message ID: 1068619
A report came out listing the nation's fittest cities? I've lived in a few. I lived in DC and was shocked to see it ranked number 1. I wasn't surprised to see Atlanta, Denver, Virginia Beach, or Miami listed.

Did your city make the list (I've posted the top 20 below but you may find the entire list here http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/23/health/fittest-cities/index.html) ? Any places surprise you or make you happy you live there?

Off-Topic / Small Towns...
« on: May 24, 2016, 06:33:27 am »Message ID: 1068422
I just read the most fascinating article about the smallest towns. There is a small town, Gross, Neb., where only two people live there. Mike and Mary Finnegan are the sole residents and they run a bar. There is also a nearby town, Monowi, where Elsie Eiler is the only resident.

Would you like to live in a town of 2 or 1?

No, the subject isn't a mistype. It's the word of the day and I thought it was so funny I had to share.

Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia: noun, fear of long words

Why is the word hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia so long if it stands for fear of long words?

Any Better Call Saul fans (the show on AMC )?

The season finale was last night and I loved it. If you watched, what are your thoughts? What did you think of Jimmy's confession to Chuck? What about Mike tracking Salamanca? Nacho has become one of my favorite characters and last night again solidified that.

I just finished reading Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person by Shonda Rhimes. It was a wonderful, inspiring book that provided me a new outlook on life.  Plus, there are some parts where I was laughing out loud.
  (two thumbs up)

What was the last book you read?

Off-Topic / 2016 Masters

Hi Golf Fans  :)

Do you watch the Masters (on tv or in person)? If so, who are your favorites? Who are you cheering on to take home the green jacket? Also, did you expect Tiger Woods to not be playing?

I'm cheering for Jason Day. He's been a favorite of mine for awhile and after last season I really think this could be his year. A few of my other favorites are Adam Scott, Bubba Watson, Rory McIlroy, and Rickie Fowler.

Also, I'm not too surprised Tiger isn't playing. I hope he focuses on getting better and rejoining the game then.

Off-Topic / Shoes Inside the House?
« on: March 22, 2016, 08:20:26 pm »Message ID: 1054724
Do you wear shoes inside your home? I typically take off my shoes and either go barefoot or wear my house slippers (they're super comfortable). When guests are over I encourage them to do whatever is comfortable but most take off their shoes. The only time shoes stay on in the house is if we are grilling (or something equivalent outside).

What about you?
