I couldn't agree with you more. Just because you get sick, doesn't mean everyone else has to get your germs, too. The worst is when you are at some kind of function, be it family or friend, and someone is hacking away, or just has that look to them like they have absolutely no business being out in public in their current state. Don't come to me wanting to give me a hug/kiss, or after you've been coughing into your hand and want to come shake my hand. While it's a bummer you'd have to miss a party, holiday, or what not, it's more courteous to just stay home and not expose everyone to what you have. Others will understand and be more appreciative than if you came and got everyone sick. And yes, having a cold is being sick, contrary to what several people I know believe. You're not just sick when you have a fever or are vomiting.
Getting sick happens. It's no fun. But, if you do get sick, please have consideration for others - cough/sneeze into your elbow (not your hands!), wash your hands often, and stay home when it's appropriate. Remember, sick days are called sick days for a reason. Three and four day weekends when the weather gets nice don't seem to fall under that category...
Good post and to the point. What about a place where you are stuck and can't get away.....like an airplane, church, etc? I think airlines need to be more observant letting people get on the plane that are really ill (coughing, sneezing, clearly perspiring with a fever, etc.). All the air in the plane is recycled, and your going to be breathing those germs. When I'm in a crowd of people and must shake hands or have contact, I try not to touch my face in any way until I can wash my hands. In restrooms, I make sure I use the paper towel that has been used to dry my hands, to turn the water off, and open the door to exit.
Daycare and schools are birthing grounds for germs. If one kid gets something, they all get it. You are going to get sick in this life, but you can reduce your chances greatly by washing your hands regularly for 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice), good hygiene, plenty of sleep, liquids, eating right, and exercising to build up the immunity. Then when we get a bug, it passes rather quickly.
