Student gunman pulls semi-pistol out of his backpack and empties magazine on five classmates in California high school quad, killing one, before shooting himself in the head on his 16th birthday

* Shooting was reported at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita at 7.45am
* Suspect described as 16-year-old Asian male in dark clothing was taken into custody and was being treated for self-
inflicted gunshot would to the head
* Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva says the sole suspect was found on campus among his victims and
   hospitalized in grave condition
* A 16-year-old was shot to death; surviving victims were described as two girls, ages 14 and 15, and two boys, both
   aged 14
*Officers seized .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol that had no rounds left in it
* Lockdown lifted at all schools in surrounding area after suspect's capture
* Vigil for those hurt in the shooting will take place in Central Park in Santa Clarita at 7pm Sunday

A California student who turned 16 years old today was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for treatment after allegedly carrying out a shooting at his high school that killed two classmates and injured three others, before turning the gun on himself.

The shooting was reported at 7.38am Pacific Time at Saugus High School on Centurion Way in Santa Clarita, about 40 miles from downtown Los Angeles.

During a press conference this afternoon, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva revealed that officers were responded to the school within two minutes of getting the first 911 call found six students suffering from gunshot wounds, among them the suspected shooter.

According to law enforcement, surveillance video from the school showed the accused gunman pulling a .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol from his backpack, firing on five people and then shooting himself in the head.

The 16-year-old boy was taken to the hospital, where he is listed in grave condition.

A female student, aged 16, has died of her injuries, along with a 14-year-old male student.

The surviving victims were described as two girls, ages 14 and 15, and a boy aged 14.

Los Angeles County Undersheriff Tim Murakami tweeted that rumors have been circulating that the shooter may have posted threats on social media.

'If you ever learn of posted threats please notify us ASAP. It will result in an immediate investigation,' he wrote. 'We have successfully prevented possible acts of violence as a result of such reports.'

Philip Germain, a Saugus High School alum, told KTLA he is organizing a vigil for those hurt in the school shooting, which will take place at 7pm on Sunday.

The Signal reported that one student was shot in the torso and treated by a teacher a classroom.

One of the victims was found wounded in the school choir room.

Television images showed sheriff’s deputies swarming the school and several people being moved on gurneys.

Lines of students were escorted away from the school by armed deputies.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office sent out a tweet earlier saying officers were searching to a male suspect in dark clothing.

A student called Alexa who heard gunshots before she was evacuated with her class said she and other students just ran for their lives.

She said she didn’t hear of any warnings before the alarm went off regarding a student or know who the suspect may be.

‘I heard the first gunshot which , I felt like I was running for my life, at this moment I prayed that everyone was ok and safe

‘We never heard of any threats or problems this suddenly happened, now we’re here getting evacuated from our school not knowing when we will be able to come back

She added: ‘It’s a sad world we live in’ and one which cannot be controlled.'

A mother of a student at the school tearfully told KTLA her daughter called her earlier, saying that a girl burst into their classroom after being shot and other students jumped into actions, trying to stop the bleeding.

A student named Riley told KTLA5 that she was standing with friends by the library on campus when she heard four to five gunshots and started running.

One student described how his heroic teacher sprang into action as soon as he heard gunshots. Mason Peters told KTLA: ‘We heard this distinctive sound outside and my teacher quickly sprang to his feet, got up, locked the door, asked one of the students to get the keys.

‘We got a bunch of desks, turned off all the lights and reinforced the doors and we all just stayed hidden.’

One student who was on his way to school when the shooting happened, said officials there had an emergency drill in the last month.

Student Mason Peters said his heroic teacher spring into action after hearing gunshots and locked the classroom door

He told KTLA: ‘I was going to school when it happened, and I heard three shots and people started running. It was chaotic,

‘My sister is still in the school, she is still in the choir room and I’m waiting for her to come out.

‘We’ve had all these drills many times, they wanted us about this happening, it’s so surreal, it never felt this real

We definitely had one in the last month or so. For the most part it’s duck and cover and block.’

The mother of student Anthony Peters told NBC he was still on lockdown inside the school but had texted that he was uninjured.

'One of the teachers said, "There is an active shooter. I heard the shots and saw three kids get shot,"' Peters' mother told NBC.

Some of the wounded were being treated in a grassy area on the school's campus, the Los Angeles Times reported. At least one injured person was found in the school's choir room, authorities told the newspaper.

Many students arrive at school later at around 7.55am as they don’t have a first period on Thursday.

A student named Sean said he was training with his team and coach when they immediately locked themselves in a room. When they reinforced the door their coach led them in prayer as they stood in a circle with their hands joined.

Sean said: ‘I was walking towards the quad where it happened, I heard the shots so I rang back to the room where I was.

‘We were all texting our parents and telling them we’re ok, we were trying to keep quiet and not make noise. We weren’t sure until our coach got a call, and they cleared the building out. After that I felt safe.'

His mom, Mercedes, said she was relieved to have her son back. She said: ‘It’s just relief, there is no real sense of knowing your child is safe until you have them in your arms. I’m just trying to calm down no. He'll be my baby forever.’

Sean added: ‘I don’t know why these things happen, they just do. We ended up all joining hands and praying, and the comfort of knowing we were there .They took us to the gym, I love my mom so much and I didn’t know what to do.

‘We settled down and we went through it together.’

A mother of one student who was outside the school said the kids have regular drills to prepare for an active shooter situation.

She told an ABC7 reporter: ‘They do multiple drills, and I always said I hate that this is the new normal but I see why now. The kids know [what to do], they should hide, shelter in place, or run if you can.

One of the students who was there with his mom claimed: ‘I know if you’re in a classroom you should just stay if there’s a teacher, if you’re already outside and really close to an exit, you should try and run but if you’re not close to an exit, you should duck into the nearest class

‘We have done lockdown drills and stuff.’

Two sisters who were outside the school with their mom appeared shaken as they told how they were reunited when the building was evacuated.

One of the girls named Emily told KTLA: ‘I never looked back, we just all kept running and people were looking for their loved ones. Everyone worked as a community it was very surprising.

‘I was like panicking the whole time, I was like my sister is in the classroom, I hope she’s ok

‘She’s here now and she was hiding, she was texting that she was so scared and it was so crazy.’

Her mom told of her terror as Emily text her saying there was a shooter in the building and she immediately rushed to the scene where she waited for news.

She said: ‘She was texting me saying there is a shooter, I was like what I couldn’t believe. It hits home so it’s been really hard, I got in my car and drove right to my school, I waited and waited and finally my daughter came running out to me

‘It was the best thing ever, she was one of the first classes let out. I found out my other daughter was with her girlfriend and mom which was like a relief.’

‘My daughter Sarah told me “mom, I’m so scared, I love you so much, please come, please come and that just killed me

‘You don’t know where they are, if they are safe, it’s so scary, I’m so glad.’

The students were brought to the Church of Latter day saints across from the high school. From there, they were taken away from the scene to Central Park where a reunification center was set up and they were being picked up by their parents.

It is understood law enforcement are trying to find out which students witnessed the incident for future legal proceedings.

The high school and other schools in the surrounding area, including Rosedell and Highland elementary schools, were placed on lockdown, which has since been lifted in the wake of the suspect's capture.

Earlier, police officers were seen surrounding a home on Sycamore Creek Drive, believed to be somehow linked to the suspect.

People are being urged to the avoid the area during the manhunt and nearby residents are being asked to lock their doors and shelter in place.

White House spokesman Judd Deere says President Donald Trump is monitoring the reports of the school shooting.

Deere says in a statement that those in the area are encouraged 'to follow the advice of local law enforcement and first responders.'

Democrat congressman Tim Ryan, who represents Ohio, reacted with shock at the latest school shooting incident.

In a Tweet he claimed: ‘My heart breaks for Saugus High School and the Santa Clarita community. How many more, @senatemajldr Mitch McConnell? Our children cannot keep living like this. The Senate needs to #DoSomething, we need to take action on gun violence.

Presidential candidate and California Senator Kamala Harris also tweeted: ‘heartbroken and praying for Santa Clarita. I’m incredibly grateful to the first responders who are on the scene of this active situation.

‘If you are near the area, please listen to law enforcement. Our children and communities are being terrorized. We can't accept this.’

Senator Dianne Feinstein urged the public to comply with emergency notices and said she was monitoring the ongoing situation.

California House Representative Katie Porter said her heart broke for families and students affected by the shooting and called for measures to control gun violence.

In a tweet she claimed: ‘My heart breaks for our neighbors in Santa Clarita and our children, who have to grow up in a world where they can't go to school without fear. This. Must. End. It is past time for our Senate and our President to say #EnoughIsEnough. They can start by passing H.R.8 into law.

The truth about bananas: Experts reveal the benefits of the fruit based on its colour - and what the brown spots on the skin REALLY mean

* Spots dietitian Ryan Pinto has revealed the benefits of ripe and unripe bananas
* Green bananas have the least sugar while brown bananas have the most
* Brown spots reveal the presence of sugar but also indicate high antioxidants
* Spotted ones are so rich in them that they've been linked to cancer prevention

As one of the cheapest and most satiating fruits, bananas are up there with the most popular snacks you can buy.

And while their health benefits are widely known, few are aware of how the ripeness of a banana impacts on its nutritional make-up.

So to help make it clear, Australian sports dietitian Ryan Pinto recently shared a graphic about the various benefits - and why eating an over-ripe banana may not be a great idea.

'The best way to understand how the health of a banana can change is by investigating what really happens to them internally over time,' he wrote on his page, High Performance Nutrition AU.

Green bananas

According to Ryan, green bananas are 'youthful, low FODMAP and full of starch'.

'Referred to as "resistant" starch, this nutrient makes your digestive system work a little harder. It's also the reason why green bananas seem to fill you up so quickly,' he wrote.

However, the starch in green bananas can also 'make you feel gassy or bloated' and also 'contributes to their waxy texture'.

'If you're looking for a banana that's lower GI, go for a green one. Eventually, your body will break this starch down into glucose. This way, green bananas will raise blood sugar levels slowly,' he said.

'The trade-off here is taste. Green bananas can be bitter, as they contain less sugar in every bite.'

Yellow bananas

'Say goodbye to starch and hello to sugar,' Ryan said.

According to the sports dietitian, yellow bananas are 'softer and sweeter' because it contains more sugar. They're also higher on the glyecmic index, meaning they're easier to digest.

'With less starch to break down, your digestive system will soak up the nutrients quicker,' Ryan said.

'Unfortunately, there is always micronutrient loss as bananas age. To make up for this, yellow bananas are more developed when it comes to antioxidants.'

Dietitian Leanne Ward, from Brisbane, usually has a boiled egg and a yellow banana as her second meal of the day.

She tends to eat around six meals a day, alongside plenty of herbal tea and water.

What other health benefits do bananas provide?

* Bananas are rich in pectin, a type of fibre that gives the flesh its spongy structural form.
* Unripe bananas contain resistant starch, which acts like soluble fibre and escapes digestion.
* A medium-sized banana has about three grams of fibre, making bananas a fairly good fibre source.
* Several studies reveal that 15–30 grams of resistant starch per day may improve insulin sensitivity by 33–50 per cent
in as few as four weeks.
* One 13-year study in women determined that those who ate bananas three to three times per week were 33 per cent
less likely to develop kidney disease.

Spotted Bananas

Very ripe bananas often exhibit brown spots on their flesh and are much sweeter in taste, which is down to their higher sugar content.

'Not only do brown spots show that a banana has aged, but they also indicate how much starch has been converted to sugar,' Ryan explained.

'Ultimately, the greater number of brown spots a banana has, the more sugar it contains.'

However, Ryan says brown spots can also be seen as 'tiny immune system boosters'.

'Spotted bananas are so rich in antioxidants that they have been linked to cancer prevention.

'Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF), which functions to destroy tumours, is linked to those brown dots,' he said.

Brown Bananas

'Do you remember all that resistant starch? Well, it's practically all sugar now,' Ryan said.

'Just as the starch has broken down into sugar, chlorophyll has taken a new form as well.

'This breakdown of chlorophyll is the reason why antioxidant levels increase as bananas age.

'All bananas are around 100 calories, low in fat and are rich sources of potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C and fibre.'

How a banana a day can keep strokes at bay

An eight-year study of 5,600 men and women over 65 found those with the least potassium in their diet were 1.5 times more likely to have a stroke than those with the most.

As the banana is a useful source of potassium, it can help to reduce the risk of a stroke in old age.

Other potassium-rich foods are lentils, oranges and avocados.

Researchers at the Queen's Medical Centre in Hawaii defined low potassium intake as less than

2.4 grams per day and high intake as more than four grams per day.

In Britain, the recommended daily dose is 3.5g.

Strokes are one of Australia's biggest killers and a leading cause of disability, while it's the third biggest killer in the UK.

Off-Topic / Cheesecake Brownies

These Cheesecake Brownies are a mouth watering combination of two dessert favorites. Extra fudgy brownies topped with a creamy cheesecake layer makes for an extra impressive dessert that no will be able to resist. Cheesecake desserts are the BEST! Make sure to try these amazing No Bake Banana Cream Pudding Cheesecake, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Mini Cheesecakes, and this Triple Threat Chocolate Cheesecake!

I have been wanting to share this recipe for the longest time. Every since my Chocolate Chip Cookie Cheesecake Bars went viral, I knew this easy recipe was going to be one that you guys would love just as much, if not more.

I mean, how could you not? It combines my two most favorite desserts – cheesecake and brownies – into one mouthwatering, totally decadent and entirely irresisitble dessert.

What Ingredients Are In Cheesecake Brownies
chocolate chips – both semi-sweet and bittersweet are needed for the brownies. If you want to, you can use just semi-sweet though. I like the flavor of the bittersweet in the brownies though.
unsalted butter – we’re adding salt in later so use unsalted. Use a high quality butter as well.
sugar – used in both the cheesecake and brownies
vanilla extract – to add depth of flavor
eggs – to bind the cheesecake together as well as for the brownies
unsweetened cocoa powder – adds maximum chocolate flavor to the brownie cheesecake bars
cornstarch – this is used instead of flour in the brownies – it makes them extra chewy!
salt – of course 🙂
cream cheese – I used full fat cream cheese for this brownie cheesecake recipe. You can however use reduced fat cream cheese if you prefer but not fat-free. It just won’t turn out right.

What Size Pan Do I Need
What I love about this recipe is that it makes just enough for a party and not so many that you’re secretly stuffing brownies in your face for the next five days. (I mean, I won’t judge you if you do that. Trust me, been there, done that.)

I made mine in a 9 inch square pan because I like my brownies to be nice and thick but you can use a 9 x 13 baking dish if you want yours to be thinner. They won’t need quite as much time to bake either.

Can I Use Brownie Mix?
For the sake of keeping this recipe nice and easy for the video, I used a boxed brownie mix. I know you love your shortcuts so using a box mix is an option.

If you want to use a box mix, that’s totally fine and I included the directions for that in my notes in the recipe below. Basically, f you’re using a brownie mix, just follow the instructions on the box to prepare the brownies and then jump to the the cheesecake layer section and start there. Easy peasy.

I actually prefer to make this with my favorite homemade brownie recipe, which I would hope you will too. It’s the recipe I use in The BEST Peanut Butter Brownies and Fudgy Toffee Flourless Brownies. Whenever I make these at home, this is what I do, and it’s outrageously good.

It’s an incredibly amazing brownie recipe that is WAY better than a box mix – IF you have the time. No pressure. Super fudgy and more chocolate flavor that should be legal.

Enough said.

Tips for Making Cheesecake Brownies
I made these cheesecake brownies in a 9-inch square pan. You can use an 8-inch square pan if you want slightly thicker bars. Add about 2 minutes to the baking time. You can also use a 9 x 13 inch pan if you want them thinner. Subtract about 5 minutes from the baking time.
For nice clean cuts, make sure to let these bars chill completely. Wipe your knife clean in between cuts as well.
Use high quality cream cheese and vanilla extract for the best cheesecake flavor.
If you have time, use my brownie recipe instead of a box mix for the best chocolate flavor and fudgy texture.

Ingredients
Brownies
12 oz semi-sweet or bittersweet chocolate chips
6 tbsp unsalted butter cut into small cubes
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 eggs room temperature
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/3 cup cornstarch
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
Cheesecake Layer
8 oz cream cheese softened
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 egg room temperature
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350F.

Lightly spray an 9-inch square baking pan with cooking spray. Line with parchment paper leaving an overhang for easy removal. Set aside.
Brownies
In a large bowl, combine chocolate chips and butter. Melt in 30-second increments, on high heat in the microwave, stirring in between.
Stir in sugar and vanilla until completely combined.
Add eggs one a time, stirring in between until combined.
In a small bowl, whisk together cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt.
Add dry mixture to wet mixture and stir vigorously until the mixture is smooth and begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl. This will take one or two minutes.
Stir in the mini chocolate chips.
Pour two-thirds of the brownie batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Set aside.

Cheesecake Layer
Using a stand mixer or hand held mixer, beat the cream cheese until light and fluffy.
Add in the sugar and beat until combined.
Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until smooth.
Spoon the cheesecake filling over the top of the brownie batter and carefully spread into a thin layer with an offset spatula.

Drizzle or spoon the remaining brownie batter over the top.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs. (Watch the brownies closely after 30 minutes. Don't rely on the time so much as the inserted toothpick.)
Let cool completely in pan. Use the parchment paper overhang to pull the brownies out and cut into squares.
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Notes
Using a box mix? No problem. Just prepare the brownie batter as directed on the box and proceed with the recipe starting with the cheesecake layer and bake as directed.

Almost 2 years ago, My aunt moved from Salinas, Calif to small town in Idaho. She was having dizzy spells. She went to hospital (small hospital) & they had to transfer to a bigger hospital, later pass it away. She had a passive blood clot. She was 80.

Why would any move to a small town with very little medical help with medical issues? If you have medical issue move to area that has a HUGE MEDICAL Hospital! Especially, if you are in late 70's - 90's!

Meet the inhabitants of Batuu! Disneyland's $1BILLION Star Wars Galaxy's Edge attraction is pictured for the first time - as Bob Iger, Steven Spielberg and JJ Abrams join forces to check it out:

* The eagerly awaited Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge attraction will open on Friday (May 31) at Disneyland, California
* The 14-acre expansion will have rides, shops selling lightsabers and 'Star Wars-appropriate food and drink'
* Disneyland is expecting massive crowds when it opens and will use 'Stormtroopers' to move people along

It's opening in two days' time and now, finally, Disneyland has revealed a picture of its finished $1billion Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge attraction, complete with the cast that'll entertain guests during their visit.

The picture was posted to Instagram by Josh D'Amaro, the president of Disneyland Resort, with the caption: 'So proud to introduce you to the inhabitants of Batuu! I want to thank this amazing team for their incredible dedication and passion. Yesterday's Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge cast rally was unforgettable. This photo is one for the ages!'

The picture was then re-posted by John Boyega, the actor who plays Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and its sequel, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

He promised that the 'amazing cast' is 'ready to give the fans all around the world the most immersive Star Wars experience!'

And then revealed that he was not only personally involved in developing the attraction, but will be there in person for the opening.

He added on his Instagram post: 'Don’t you worry I’ll be there to help guide you through one of the most insane rides! It was a pleasure to work with the team on this. Enjoy and may the force be with you.'

Earlier in the month Robert Iger, the Chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, tweeted pictures from a personal tour he gave Star Wars director JJ Abrams, Star Wars producer Kathleen Kennedy and director Steven Spielberg.

The snaps showed them inside and outside the Millennium Falcon along with the caption 'best way to impress your friends... give them a personal tour of @starwars Galaxy's Edge!'

The eagerly awaited 14-acre attraction will have rides, shops selling personal droids and lightsabers and 'Star Wars-appropriate food and drink'.

The California resort is expecting massive crowds when it opens and has revealed detailed plans on how it will accommodate guests.

For the first three weeks, guests must have a reservation to enter and will be limited to four hours inside the immersive new land, the largest single-themed land inside a Disney park.

A special wristband will identify a visitor's time window, and once it expires, Disney said it will shut off access to key attractions and merchandise locations.

Park employees dressed as Star Wars characters will ultimately ask visitors to make their way toward one of the three exits so a new group can enter.

Kris Theiler, vice president of Disneyland park, said: 'There might be some First Order officers out there helping us or maybe some Stormtroopers asking people to move along.

'We'll employ the First Order maybe later in the reservation period if we need to.'

The park has plenty of other, more subtle ways to manage crowd flow. Theiler said walkways were widened from three to about six feet in different areas, and stroller parking is available.

Around 7,500 new parking spaces along with new parking lot entrances and toll booths were added. A new pedestrian bridge was also built to help avoid jams.

Disneyland declined to share the capacity limit for Galaxy's Edge.

Disney has made Galaxy's Edge look and feel like part of the Star Wars universe. It's designed as a grungy outpost on a distant planet.

The marquee attraction is a massive replica of the Millennium Falcon, where guests can roam the ship's halls and engage in a dogfight with Tie Fighters. Another ride called Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is set to open later in the year.

The same Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge land will open for visitors to Florida's Disney World Resort on August 29.

President Jimmy Carter in hospital after falling and breaking a hip on his way to a turkey hunt - and says his 'main concern' is that he hasn't bagged his limit before the season ends

Former President Jimmy Carter has broken his hip on the way to a turkey hunt.

Carter, 94, had to undergo surgery after he fell at his home in Plains, Georgia on Monday morning.

But it seems the serious injury was far from the Nobel Peace Prize winner's mind.

Instead, Carter revealed that his 'main concern' was that turkey season was ending this week and 'he has not reached his limit'.

'He hopes the state of Georgia will allow him to roll over the unused limit to next year,' a statement from his office read.

Georgia residents are allow to hunt three 'gobblers per season', according to the Georgia Wildlife Resources Division.

Carter's office said he is now 'recovering comfortably' from surgery at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia.

'His surgeon stated that the surgery was successful,' it added.

Rosalynn Carter, the former president's wife for nearly 73 years, is by his side.

Off-Topic / New Royal Baby For Harry & Meghan
« on: May 07, 2019, 11:15:15 am »Message ID: 1274377
I'm sure Princess Diana would be proud!

New birth, new start: It’s time for Harry to stop his privacy war with the press, Meghan to heal the rift with her dad, and both of them to stop feuding with Wills and Kate

I’d just posted a snarky ‘Trying, but currently failing, to muster up a semblance of enthusiasm for this royal baby’ tweet yesterday afternoon when I received an urgent text message from my mother.

‘Think back to how you felt when your little lot were born,’ she wrote. ‘You don’t want people ruining it.’

Of course, she was right, as mothers usually are.

It was needlessly churlish of me to express such public disinterest in the birth of Meghan and Harry’s son.

I may not be a great personal fan of my former friend the Duchess of Sussex, for reasons I’ve discussed too many times now, but the birth of any baby should always be a time for celebration.

It certainly was for me.

The births of my four children were all moments of quite wondrous excitement.

There really is nothing more earth-shatteringly powerful than the arrival of a newborn child, blinking and shrieking its innocent, vulnerable way into the big, bad world.

No wonder Prince Harry sounded so ecstatic, proud and slightly dazed. It’s an experience, particularly with your first baby when you have no real idea what to expect, that frankly dwarfs anything else life has to offer.

So I found Harry’s impromptu speech outside Frogmore Cottage home very touching.

‘Amazing!’ he gushed, ‘absolutely incredible…I’m thrilled… I’m just over the moon!’

The sheer unadulterated joy written all over his face said it all.

I remember that feeling.

You never forget it.

Babies bring out the best in people – reminding us all that what really matters in life is family, friends and good health.

They also offer a chance for reflection, for taking a few beats to contemplate where your life has taken you so far and where you want it to take you next.

This royal birth has come after a highly turbulent year for Harry and his American bride; one that’s been dominated by a lot of surging fame and fun, but also by a lot of feuding.

First, Harry’s bitter long-time battle with the press.

The headstrong Prince has made no secret of his disdain for the media, and especially newspapers, still holding them responsible for his mother’s death in a Paris road chase with paparazzi.

I get why he feels so antagonistic towards the fourth estate, but I urge him now to let it drop before it makes him look ridiculous and hypocritical.

The birth of this baby, the first mixed race child born to the British royals, should be a moment for national, and indeed global, celebration.

But Harry and Meghan declared they wanted the birth plans to remain private.

‘Entirely their right!’ screamed their supporters.

But is it?

Part of the deal of being a Prince is that you share your happy family stuff with the public. It’s what you do in return for all the palaces, servants and endless luxuries that go with the title – much of which is paid for by the taxpayer.

As a result of this rather petulant act of defiance, yesterday became a guessing-game farce.

‘It was a home birth!’ shouted some headlines.

‘It was a hospital birth!’ shouted others.

The Palace didn’t say either way, mindful of Harry and Meghan’s demand for privacy.

In fact, in transpired that Harry and his royal security team had conducted a late-night cloak-and-dagger operation to squirrel his wife out of their home to a private hospital in London, evading the camped-out press and fans. Even senior royals were left in the dark.

The bizarre subterfuge continued when we were officially told she’d gone into labour eight hours after she’d actually given birth.

And when it was finally confirmed the baby had indeed arrived, details of the medical team that delivered the little boy, which are usually included in royal birth announcements, were curiously omitted.

So the public were left uninformed of basic harmless facts and the media left to speculate in the very way Harry claims to find so annoying.

The couple also refused to do the normal post-birth royal baby photo-op either.

I suspect that Meghan, a Hollywood actress by trade, didn’t want to risk looking anything but as perfect as possible before they finally do a picture tomorrow.

But this exclusionary treatment of the media is ultimately self-defeating: without media attention, interest in the royals would quickly die. They shun us at their peril.

Meghan knew the deal when she married Harry, and voluntarily signed up for public life. Harry knows the deal too, but chooses to ignore it and use the media only when it suits him. That, I’m afraid, is not how it works. It’s time he made peace with the press, even if it’s through gritted teeth.

The second feud is between Harry and William, and, as a consequence, between their wives too.

I’m told on good authority there’s been genuine tension between the two brothers, much of it originating from William’s understandable elder sibling concern that young Harry was rushing into marriage with a 36-year-old American divorcee.

As a result of their arguments, Harry has deliberately ploughed an increasingly unconventional royal route with Meghan – positioning themselves as the new international royal rock stars, unrestricted by the sense of duty Duke and Duchess of Cambridge must observe as Britain’s future King and Queen.

This, in turn, has annoyed William and Kate who are being made to look like boring irrelevances by comparison.

Harry and Meghan need to cool their celebrity jets and understand their place in the structure of the Monarchy.

William and Kate MUST be the biggest stars, just as the Queen and Prince Philip have been for over 60 years, and Prince Charles and his wife Camilla will be when he accedes to the throne.

Harry’s son is already just 7th in line to the throne, and like his father will slip ever lower as he gets older.

In the general scheme of royal succession, Harry and Meghan are unimportant.

But their thirst for global celebrity threatens to diminish the brand of the future Monarch, and that can’t be allowed to happen.

So this silly on-going feud between the Fab Four must stop, for their sakes and the sake of the Royal Family.

Finally, Meghan needs to make peace with her father Thomas.

Their ugly falling-out has blighted the royal fairy-tale ever since the wedding.

Yesterday, Thomas made a very gracious statement saying, “I am proud that my new grandson is born into the British royal family and I am sure that he will grow up to serve the crown and the people of Britain with grace, dignity and honour. God bless the child and I wish him health and happiness, and my congratulations to my lovely daughter Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry, and God save the Queen.’

These words sounded like a carefully honed olive branch to me, and it is one Meghan should not be too stubborn to seize.

When I interviewed Thomas last November, he said he hoped the baby would bring him and his daughter closer again.

‘I’m certainly hoping that I’ll get to see a little Meghan or a little Harry, that would be very nice,’ he said. ‘I think she’ll make a great mum and I think that maybe things will soften a little bit and maybe we can connect again.’

Thomas has brought much of Meghan’s wrath onto himself, and I say that as someone who also feels a lot of sympathy for the way he was blown into turmoil by the royal maelstrom that disrupted his quiet retirement.

But he remains her Dad, and the man about whom, until she met Harry three years ago, she regularly professed her undying love and gratitude for on social media.

I’m sorry, but Harry can’t endlessly bang on about mental health, and the urgent need to reach out to people suffering from loneliness or ill health, but still refuse to even meet his father-in-law, knowing the torment the estrangement is putting Thomas through.

Nor can Meghan persuade me, after the loving way she talked about her father when we met in my local pub, that the split between them makes her anything but miserable.

They should take their son to meet his grandfather as soon as possible and heel the heart-breaking rift – before it’s too late.

Babies are wonderful things.

Let this one be the catalyst not just for radical change in the cultural identity of the British Royal Family – but also for an end to the feuds currently putting a large cloud over his parents’ sunshine.

As my mother would say: ‘You don’t want people ruining it.’

Off-Topic / America has nearly 1.5million prisoners behind bars - more than any country

America has nearly 1.5million prisoners behind bars - more than any country in the world - despite efforts to reduce numbers!

* The imprisonment rate for all state and federal prisoners decreased 2.1% in 2017
* Despite the decline, America has the world's largest known incarcerated population in the world - it's unclear how many
   prisoners are in China
* The overall incarceration rate in the U.S. has declined 13% since 2007, but still remains 236% higher than it was in
   1978, according to federal data

Despite bipartisan efforts to reform the criminal justice system and reduce the length of sentences, the number of people in American prisons has seen only a slight decline in recent years, according to data from the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics.

The imprisonment rate for all state and federal prisoners decreased 2.1 percent year-on-year in 2017, the most recent year for which data is available.

In 2017 there were 440 sentenced prisoners per 100,000 Americans, down from 450 in 2016.

Despite the overall decline, the U.S. remains the nation with the largest known incarcerated population in the world (it's unclear how many prisoners are in China).

Overall, the state and federal prison population decreased by 18,700 prisoners from 2016-2017, to a total of 1,489,400 at the end of 2017 – a 1.2 percent decrease.

'If we keep working on the kinds of criminal justice reforms that we're doing right now, it's going to take us 75 years to reduce the population by half,' said Rachel Barkow, a sentencing expert at New York University School of Law and author of 'Prisoners of Politics: Breaking the Cycle of Mass Incarceration.'

'The kinds of reforms we're seeing now are really modest,' she told The New York Times. 'I'm glad were getting them. But this is not transformative yet.'

The overall incarceration rate in the U.S. has declined 13 percent since 2007, but still remains 236 percent higher than it was in 1978.

The decrease over the past decade was largely thanks to a 2014 decision by the U.S. Sentencing Commission to reduce sentencing guidelines for drug crimes – a change that accounts for about a third of the decline from 2016-2017.

However, a disparity remains from one state to the next in the prison and jail populations: some have seen significant reductions, while others continue to see the number of incarcerated people climb year after year.

New York, New Jersey and Connecticut all saw significant drops, largely due to policy changes. For example, some states have reclassified some crimes that were previously felonies as misdemeanors, while others have given sentencing judges more discretion.

California stands apart for having one of the biggest reductions in the past 10 years, which was the result of a U.S. Supreme Court order in 2011 that the state must remove 30,000 inmates from its overcrowded prison system.

The state still had the second-highest number of incarcerated people in the nation (131,039) in 2017, behind only Texas (162,523).

Florida ranked third, with 98,504 incarcerated people in 2017.

Nationwide, 55 percent of state prisoners were serving sentences for violent offenses by the end of 2016, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

That's despite a dramatic drop in the nation's violent crime rate – an indication that America has such a large prison population not just because it locks so many people up, but because it keeps them incarcerated for longer periods of time.

The U.S. accounts for roughly 4 percent of the world's population, though it has more than a third of the people serving sentences worldwide, according to an international survey entitled, 'Life Imprisonment: A Global Human Rights Analysis.'

As prisoners age within the system, the cost of caring for them grows – and more than 10 percent of inmates were age 55 or older in 2017.

Racial disparities in the prison population persist, though the rate of African Americans in prison decline by nearly a third in the past 10 years.

Still, African American men serve prison sentences at almost six times the rate of white men, while black women are incarcerated at roughly double the rate of white women.

Nearly half of U.S. adults have had a relative in jail or prison
Nearly half (45 percent) of all American adults have an immediate family member who has been incarcerated, according to a new report.

That amounts to roughly 113 million people who have been touched by mass incarceration in the United States, according to the survey of 4,041 Americans.

The research was done by FWD.us, a non-profit established by American business and tech leaders advocating for criminal justice and immigration reform, in partnership with Cornell University.

Right now, an estimated 6.5 million Americans have an immediate family member in jail or prison. And U.S. jail and prison populations have swelled to four times what they were in 1980, with about 1.5 million people in state and federal prisons on any given day in America.

Two Californian universities order 238 unvaccinated staff and students to stay at home after infection scare in worst measles outbreak in the US for 25 years!

* UCLA and Cal State in Los Angeles said as many as 500 people may be at risk
* An infected student attended classes in two UCLA buildings earlier in April
* UCLA chancellor, Gene Block, said the time frame for symptoms is nearly over
* Almost 700 measles cases have been recorded across the US this year

More than 200 university students and staff have been quarantined in Los Angeles because of a measles outbreak.

University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State) has ordered 238 people to stay at home.

As many as 500 may have been exposed to the measles virus by a student who developed the disease earlier this month, officials said.

The drastic actions comes as the worst measles outbreak for a quarter-century is gripping the US, with almost 700 people infected already in 2019.

A total of 156 people at Cal State were unable to prove they had been vaccinated against measles so have been ordered to stay away from campus.

Another 82 at UCLA – where the infected student attends – faced the same treatment because they couldn't give evidence they were protected from the illness.

In a statement on the college's website, UCLA chancellor Gene Block said experts at the university were working with health officials to monitor the situation.

The infected patient is thought to have been contagious when they attended classes in Franz Hall and Boelter Hall buildings April 2, 4 and 9.

Dr Block said: 'Considering the time that has elapsed since the last possible exposure to the individual with measles on April 9, the highest risk period for developing measles has already passed – and the period during which symptoms may appear is nearing the end.

'I know there is concern about measles, particularly among the very small percentage of our community who have not been vaccinated.

'Please be assured that we have the resources we need for prevention and treatment, and that we are working very closely with local public health officials on the matter.'

Measles, a highly infectious virus, tends to cause symptoms including a cold-like illness, fever, white spots in the mouth and a blotchy rash within 10 days.

The US has recorded 695 cases of measles already this year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – the highest in the same period for 25 years.

Most of these have been in New York (around three quarters of all cases) and Washington, with 38 confirmed in California.

According to a CDC report released on Monday, measles has been reported in 22 states already this year.

This week, officials in Southern California warned they expect more measles cases to come after confirming five in Los Angeles.

And officials in Northern California warned of a potentially large outbreak after a man with measles went to the cinema in Redding, just north of Sacramento.

More than 76 per cent of California patients were people who had not been vaccinated, and anti-vaccine sentiment is believed to be to blame for rising rates.

A rise in measles in the US is coinciding with soaring rates around the world – globally, there were 300 per cent more cases in the first quarter of 2019 than the same period in 2018.

There were around 112,000 patients recorded in January, February and March, up from 28,000 last year.

Anti-vaxxers, who avoid vaccines because of inaccurate fears the jabs don't work, are harmful, or could cause autism, are believed to be driving this rise.

A report by children's charity UNICEF this week revealed 2.6milllion American children were not given their first MMR vaccine between 2010 and 2017.

This was alongside 287,000 in Canada, 608,000 in France and 527,000 in the UK.

Head of the NHS in England, Simon Stevens, said: 'It is grossly irresponsible for anybody to spread scare stories about vaccines.'

Is Andrew Wakefield's Discredited Autism Research To Blame For Low Measles Vaccination Rates?

In 1995, gastroenterologist Andrew Wakefield published a study in The Lancet showing children who had been vaccinated against MMR were more likely to have bowel disease and autism.

He speculated that being injected with a 'dead' form of the measles virus via vaccination causes disruption to intestinal tissue, leading to both of the disorders.

After a 1998 paper further confirmed this finding, Wakefield said: 'The risk of this particular syndrome [what Wakefield termed 'autistic enterocolitis'] developing is related to the combined vaccine, the MMR, rather than the single vaccines.'

At the time, Wakefield had a patent for single measles, mumps and rubella vaccines, and was therefore accused of having a conflict of interest.

Nonetheless, MMR vaccination rates in the US and the UK plummeted, until, in 2004, the editor of The Lancet Dr Richard Horton described Wakefield's research as 'fundamentally flawed', adding he was paid by a group pursuing lawsuits against vaccine manufacturers.

The Lancet formally retracted Wakefield's research paper in 2010.

Three months later, the General Medical Council banned Wakefield from practising medicine in Britain, stating his research had shown a 'callous disregard' for children's health.

On January 6 2011, The British Medical Journal published a report showing that of the 12 children included in Wakefield's 1995 study, at most two had autistic symptoms post vaccination, rather than the eight he claimed.

At least two of the children also had developmental delays before they were vaccinated, yet Wakefield's paper claimed they were all 'previously normal'.

Further findings revealed none of the children had autism, non-specific colitis or symptoms within days of receiving the MMR vaccine, yet the study claimed six of the participants suffered all three.

WHAT IS MEASLES?
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads easily from an infected person by coughing, sneezing or even just breathing.

Symptoms develop between six and 19 days after infection, and include a runny nose, cough, sore eyes, a fever and a rash.

The rash appears as red and blotchy marks on the hairline that travel down over several days, turning brown and eventually fading.

Some children complain of disliking bright lights or develop white spots with red backgrounds on their tongue.

In one in 15 cases, measles can cause life-threatening complications including pneumonia, convulsions and encephalitis.

Dr Ava Easton, chief executive of the Encephalitis Society told MailOnline: 'Measles can be very serious.

'[It] can cause encephalitis which is inflammation of the brain.

'Encephalitis can result in death or disability.'

Treatment focuses on staying hydrated, resting and taking painkillers, if necessary.

Measles can be prevented by receiving two vaccinations, the first at 13 months old and the second at three years and four months to five years old.

Desperate battle to save Notre Dame’s priceless collection of art and relics: Firefighters formed a HUMAN CHAIN to save treasures – including the Crown Of Thorns from Jesus' crucifixion
* Notre Dame de Paris held a priceless collection of art and relics including the Crown of Thorns
* The relics were obtained from the Byzantine Empire in 1238 and brought to Paris by King Louis IX
* Last night the Mayor of Paris thanked firefighters and police for forming a 'formidable human chain' to save the
   priceless historical artefacts

Firefighters, police, and churchmen risked their lives last night to carry priceless historical artefacts and religious relics away from the flames which engulfed Notre Dame de Paris.

The Mayor of Paris tweeted her thanks to first responders for forming 'a formidable human chain' to save irreplaceable objects including the relic believed by Catholics to be the crown of thorns which was put on Jesus' head as he died on the cross.

Mayor Anne Hidalgo went on: 'The Crown of Thorns, the tunic of Saint Louis and several other major works are now in a safe place.'

And Father Fournier, Chaplain of the Paris Firefighters, told reporters he went into the burning cathedral to save the Blessed Sacrament and Crown of Thorns.

Parisians applauded and cheered fire crews as they drove through the streets in the early hours of the morning.

The church's treasure trove of priceless artworks and religious relics include the Crown of Thorns said to have been placed on the head of Jesus before he was crucified, a piece of the True Cross on which he is said to have died and a nail from the crucifixion.

The relics were obtained from the Byzantine Empire in 1238 and brought to Paris by King Louis IX.

Notre Dame is also home to priceless paintings dating back to the 1600s, including a series known as the Petits Mays, gifted to the cathedral once a year from 1630 to 1707.

Among the most celebrated artworks are three stained-glass rose windows high up on the west, north and south faces of the cathedral.

Notre Dame's Great Organ, which dates back to the 13th century and was restored in the early 1990s, is considered the most famous in the world, with five keyboards and nearly 8,000 pipes.

Last night firemen at the scene said all efforts were being directed at saving artwork in the cathedral and preventing the collapse of its northern tower.

'Everything is collapsing,' a police officer near the scene said as the cathedral continued to burn.

The ten bells of Notre Dame are renowned across Europe and the first nine are named Marie, Gabriel, Anne-Genevieve, Denis, Marcel, Etienne, Benoit-Joseph, Maurice, and Jean-Marie.

The final and largest, known as the bourdon bell Emmanuel, weighs more than 13 tonnes. It sits in the southern tower and has been a part of the building since 1681.

In 1944, Emmanuel was rung in celebration and triumph by French troops and allies to announce to the city that it was on its way to liberation.

The famous gargoyles and chimera that adorn Notre Dame were built in the 19th century by architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc. The original purpose of the gargoyles was to assist with the building's drainage, but they have become one of its most-loved features.

In the 1790s, Notre Dame was desecrated during the French Revolution when much of its religious imagery was damaged or destroyed and its treasures plundered.

The 28 statues of biblical kings located at the west facade, mistaken for statues of French kings, were beheaded.

All of the other large statues on the facade, with the exception of that of the Virgin Mary on the portal of the cloister, were destroyed.

The cathedral was restored over 25 years after the publication of the book The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo in 1831 brought it into the spotlight.

Sixteen statues that were part of the cathedral's destroyed spire were safe and unscathed after being removed as part of a renovation a few days ago, and that the relics had also been saved.

The green-grey statues, representing the 12 apostles and four evangelists, were apparently lowered by cranes from the site and taken away.

The cathedral also has a spectacular series of carved wooden stalls and statues representing the Passion of the Christ.
