A Letter In My City Newspaper! Amazing letter! I do wear a mask!

I wear my mask for the doctors, nurses and other medical personnel who have tended to me over my lifetime. I wear my mask for the military who protect our way of life. I wear my mask for the lab technicians who fight for us on another front.

I wear my mask for the firefighters who saved our community. I wear my mask for the police who may find themselves in danger trying to protect us.

I wear my mask for the protesters who stay socially conscious. I wear my mask for the dentists and dental hygienists who keep me smiling. I wear my mask for the people who cannot afford healthcare. I wear my mask for the hazmat workers whose numbers are growing.

I wear my mask for the astronauts who let me live vicariously with their space walks. I wear my mask for 2012 Olympic Silver Medalist Galen Rupp.

I wear my mask for the safety of my family and friends. I wear my mask so you can stay safe.

Off-Topic / British firm unveils design for the 'world's largest commercial hybrid electric

British firm unveils design for the 'world's largest commercial hybrid electric plane' that can seat 70 people and has a 'whisper-quiet' take-off

* Bristol-based firm reveals images of 'the largest commercial hybrid in the world'
* Hybrid electric regional craft will carry passengers in the day and cargo at night
* It is powered partly from an electric engine and other part conventional jet fuel
* Its development will support jobs in the region post-Brexit before a 2028 launch

A British firm has unveiled concept images for what it claims will be the 'largest commercial hybrid plane in the world'.

The 70-seater 'hybrid electric regional aircraft' (HERA) has a 'whisper-quiet' operation to reduce noise pollution and airborne battery regeneration.

It's a hybrid passenger plane – meaning it's powered partly by an environmentally-friendly electric engine and other part conventional jet fuel – and has a range of 800 nautical miles (920 regular miles).

But the aircraft range will be extended to 1,200 nautical miles (1,381 miles beyond 2030) as battery energy density improves.

The regional aircraft has been designed by the Electric Aviation Group (EAG), a Bristol-based engineering and development firm.

The HERA aircraft, which will be in service by 2028, will create job opportunities in the aerospace, manufacturing and engineering industries post-Brexit, according to the designers.

'Significant investments have been raised to develop sub-19 seat hybrid and all-electric aircraft which we believe is the wrong strategy,' said Kamran Iqbal, founder and CEO at EAG.

'These small planes cannot meet the demands of mass air transportation or the requirements of decarbonisation.

'Our design is for an aircraft that will initially offer 800 nautical miles range at launch in 2028, and which will be able to carry over 70 people.

'We will be a first mover in what is a $4.4 trillion market.'

EAG said it has already developed and filed a total of 25 patents for the aircraft, which is still in the developmental phase.

When complete by 2028, it will help to 'solve the challenges of decarbonisation and mass transportation' by eliminating the emissions of huge quantities of greenhouse gases, typical with jet fuel planes.

Thanks to its hybrid engine, the craft has a 70 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions per passenger over a one-kilometre distance.

HERA cuts typical emissions of Earth-warming nitrogen oxides, which form when oxygen and nitrogen from the air interact during the high-temperature combustion events, by 90 per cent, while noise pollution is also reduced by 65 per cent.

EAG said recent climate-related events around the world 'should have left no doubt' that aviation stakeholders have to play their part to achieve lower emissions in the aviation sector.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Boris Johnson set the goal of the UK producing the world’s first zero-emission long-haul passenger plane with the slogan 'Jet Zero'.

However, as it stands, battery weight and range means that manufacturers currently view larger electric planes as feasible only for short-haul flights, according to UK environmental group AirportWatch.

Even then the focus is largely on hybrid-electric, with jet fuel needed for take-off.

All-electric aircraft need big batteries – but as batteries scale-up in size, the number of passengers on board needs to be scaled down.

Using a hybrid design, EAG says it has found a happy medium, although its aircraft can only manage regional flights.

The aircraft will have around 3.8 ton (3.5 tonne) of lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery at 250Wh/kg battery energy density on entry into service in 2028.

HERA is suitable for operating from regional airports, which gives increased proximity to warehouses, enabling the delivery of private sector cargo.

It features airborne battery regeneration to minimise turn-around time and will carry  passengers during the day and cargo at night.

The craft has the flexibility to transform into an all-electric or carbon-neutral plane as the battery density improves or alternative fuels become affordable.

The organisation expects to initially create more than 25,000 jobs and unlock $5 billion investments in the UK aerospace industry.

'We expect this to be a great example of British design, engineering and build,' said Iqbal.

'This represents the future of both passenger and cargo flights internationally and as an opportunity for investment, it could not be better timed.'

EAG draws on 'the rich heritage and strong aviation industry' in Bristol when it begins production of the new aircraft, including the hugely important Bristol Aeroplane Company, which eventually merged to become the British Aircraft Corporation.

The design is being unveiled to coincide with today's opening of FIA Connect, the virtual Farnborough Airshow.

What Are Hybrid Vehicles?

A hybrid vehicle has two power sources – a petrol engine and an electric motor – combining to propel the cars forward.

By switching seamlessly between pure electric power at low speeds and efficient petrol power when speeds increase, these vehicles not only save fuel and money, but they also reduce CO2 emissions.

Hybrids can be self-charging which means that every moment you are driving, your battery is charging, by using technology such as a regenerative braking system, which recovers energy that would normally be lost and stores it in the battery for later use.

Self-charging hybrids do not need to be plugged in.

A plug-in hybrid gets all the benefits of being a hybrid but also has a charge point so you can extend the range of your car by plugging in at home or at one of the nation’s electric charge points.

How you can bring dying plants back to life in hours with water and old banana peel

* A mother has revealed how banana peel is the secret to reviving a dying plant
* You need to soak banana peels inside a jar of water for 24 hours before watering
* Bananas have potassium, phosphorous and calcium - which are good for plants
* Other natural fertilisers include an Epsom salts bath and seaweed-soaked water

A mother has revealed how leftover banana peel is the secret to reviving a dying plant in just hours.

The Australian woman, who goes by The Pantry Mama on Facebook, said you can easily give your indoor plants a 'boost' by popping banana skins in a jar of water and leaving the jar for 24 hours to infuse.

'Feed the water to your plants and the skin can go in the compost,' The Pantry Mama wrote online.

'My plants are so lush and green [as a result].'

The reason why the trick works is because the banana acts as a natural fertiliser for plants, especially roses.

Packed with potassium, phosphorous and calcium, the minerals have a host of benefits for plants.

These include promoting general plant vigour and life, building up resistance to pests and disease and assistance with pollination.

The phosphorous in banana also reportedly helps with good root and shoot growth.

When it comes to how often you should use the plant fertiliser, The Pantry Mama explained that 'every few weeks is okay'.

'I have over 50 plants and so I just make a batch every time someone eats a banana, and then pop the water into whichever plant needs a drink,' she said.

This isn't the first time a natural plant fertiliser has wowed the internet.

Previously, a mother revealed a clever hack for bringing 'sad' house plants back to life after they've started to droop.

She revealed that sometimes soaking plants in water isn't enough for thirsty greenery, and explained that you need to add an everyday household ingredient to create a super-charged solution.

'A few inches of water in the bath with Epsom salts and I give the leaves a shower to get dust etc off and keep it happy,' she wrote alongside before and after photos of her plants.

Epsom salts are rich in magnesium sulfate, which increases chlorophyll production, while warm water will help to kill pests in the soil, such as aphids and mites.

Other natural plant fertilisers that wok include soaking seaweed and weeds in water, before pouring the solution over your plants.

What are the best natural fertilisers for your plants?
* Soak bananas in water and leave for 24 hours, before pouring the mixture over the plants.

* Soak plants in the bath with Epsom salts to revive them.

* Seaweed works as a great fertiliser when mixed with water and left for 24 hours.

* Soak weeds with water, leave for 24 hours and pour over the plants.

Body is recovered in search for Naya Rivera after the Glee actress vanished six days ago while out boating on California's Lake Piru with her four-year-old son

* Naya Rivera went missing on Wednesday July 8 on Lake Piru in California, 20 miles from where she grew up
* Her four-year-old son Josey was found asleep alone on their pontoon boat but she was nowhere to be found
* Sheriffs deputies say they've found a body but they will not yet confirm that it is that of the Glee actress
* Rivera, 33, knew the lake well and considered it her 'sanctuary' but it is known rip currents and cold patches
* Rivera sent a photo of Josey on the boat to a relative 90 minutes before he was found alone
* It showed which cove the pair had sailed to, and that's where teams focused their search on Monday morning

A body has been recovered in the search for missing Glee actress Naya Rivera who vanished on a California lake and was feared to have drowned six days ago.

Authorities are yet to formally confirm that the body is that of the 33-year-old. They announced the grim discovery on Twitter, saying: 'A body has been found at Lake Piru this morning.

'The recovery is in progress.'

Rivera vanished on Wednesday on Lake Piru after taking a pontoon boat out on the water with her four-year-old son Josey.

Josey was later found alone, sleeping on the boat, by another group who noticed it drifting.

Search and rescue teams have spent the last six days combing the lake for traces of the actress but struggled against poor visibility and the sheer size of the lake.

On Monday, they honed in on a cove where the actress had taken a photograph of Josey and sent it to a relative 90 minutes before he was found on the boat.

They focused their search on that cove on Monday.

The actress grew up 20 miles from the lake and was familiar with it, police sources said last week.

The Ventura County Sheriff announced the discovery on Twitter on Monday afternoon
The Ventura County Sheriff announced the discovery on Twitter on Monday afternoon

She thought of it as her 'sanctuary', despite it being known for rip currents and icy waters that can overpower swimmers.

A press conference about Monday's discovery has been scheduled for 2pm local time.

On Sunday, Naya's distraught family were seen at the lake trying to assist investigators in their search for her.

Josey told police that his mother 'jumped in' and never came back up to the surface.

'There was a picture sent to a family member that showed the boy on the boat by a cove. We found where that cove was,' Robert Inglis of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Search & Rescue Team told Us Weekly.

He previously said: 'What I suspect is that the winds kicked up.

'Those pontoon boats are very light, and when you push them, it can get away from you. She might've tried to swim after the boat. But that's all speculation. Once we do locate her, that'll answer a lot more questions.'

Police have not shared the image and it's unclear which cove it was taken in. Over the weekend, they asked members of the public not to go looking for the star themselves in the dangerous water.

The actress's father George on Sunday appeared to help co-ordinate the hunt for his missing daughter after police confirmed 'nothing came' of their search of cabins along Lake Piru.

On Sunday, the Ventura County Sheriff's Office had announced that cabins on the banks of the lake would be searched after social media users theorized that Rivera could have ended up in one.

But Sgt. Shannon King later told People: 'They're not occupied. Nothing came of it. There's no evidence to say she left the water. It appears to be 100 percent just a tragic drowning.'

The lake itself is 1,200 acres and can reach depths of up to 130 feet.

In it, authorities point to a barely visible tree limb highlighting the challenges divers are facing in trying to find the missing mother-of-one.

With almost zero visibility, human divers are resorting to searching by feel, meaning it could take several days before crews can locate her body, Eric Buschow, Ventura County Sheriff's Office spokesman, said at a press conference Friday evening.

'We don't know if she's going to be found five minutes from now or five days from now, so we're still going to be continuing this effort,' he said. 'The visibility in the water is one to two feet,' Buschow added.
