calling all human lie detectors....

How can you tell if someone is lying to you. What are the clues, body languages cues...etc...  :angel12:

The biggest clue a lot of times is that they are not looking at you.  No eye contact is a biggie.  Also, if you ask questions and they hesitate and think, watch out.

If I were lying, I stutter.

I find repetition to be common when people are lying. Me: where were you today? lying person: just home nowhere else. me:okay
lying person: so what did you do all day while I was just home nowhere else? me: at the mall and out to lunch, did some errands
lying person: yeah I should have went somewhere and not just stayed home and did nothing else  ::)

lol. Im not sure if they feel the more times you say it it becomes more true or what?

also 9x out of 10 if the story is entirely too elaborate its a lie also, offering very specific details for no reason.
me: what did you do today? lying person: I stayed home all day, looked at a crack in the wall in the kitchen and watched Family Fued at 11 am and waited for the mailman at 3 pm since I knew that you would be home at 6 pm.
etc.

My intuition will inform me. We’re equipped with this inner B.S. meter inside. Anyone who habitually lies all the time will not be able to distinguish between a truth and a lie sooner or later.

My ex was a cop and he always claimed that they say if the liars eyes keep looking to the left that thats an indicator and also look at the mouth. The mouth will do twitching or some kind of movement that is also an indicator.  I dont know if these are truely proven but thats what he claimed.

I find they start giving lots of unnecessary details.  "Well, on my way home I caught 3 red lights, then there was this guy who was stopped in the middle of the road on his phone like he had nowhere to go."  This probably means they stayed longer than they should have.

These tells do now work with everyone.  When I first began taking Psychology, we discussed lying "tells".  SHortly after that, I begin mixing my lying tells with my truthful ones.  I go out of my way to NOT look someone in the eye when I am honest.

I do this to keep people guessing.  It works.  People never know now.

They give you way too much details
Their stories don't add up which is not good if you lie constantly but have a bad memory
They hide stuff from you

and with the eye stuff: some people can lie and tell the truth while looking straight at you.

personally i think those "cues" to tell someone is lying isn't very effective..
it all depends on the person, maybe they tell unnecessary details because they're a very descriptive person.
or maybe if someone doesn't look in your eyes when they talk to you, it's just because they don't like eye contact and they're a shy person..

if you know someone really well, you can tell if they're lying so yeah

Interesting topic!  I agree with those who mentioned the lack of eye contact and nervousness. Body language can be a giveaway.
Listen to this - when my dishwasher overflowed a few years ago and destroyed the kitchen floor - the insurance company sent out an adjustor who was unable to hear.  He asked me to explain what happened (they were on the hook to replace the floor) so I did.  He watched me very closely the whole tiime.  It didn't make me nervous - I just related exactly what happened.  But I sure could see how he was a very effective adjustor!

Really just rely on women's intuition. PLUS, look for signs or clues that they may be lying. I've had past experiences where people would lie to me and I could just some how sense they were lying, then things just didn't add up. They weren't where they said they were the night before, they were acting suspicious or sneaky, they were very uncomfortable when I spoke to them or their tone was a little off. It's all about being able to read people. I can simply look at somebody and KNOW when they're lying.

Eye contact and too much of a story are pretty good clues. But, a really practiced liar doesn't even know that truth so it is hard to tell sometimes.

They will not look you directly in the lie, it is hard to tell because different people have different ways, the best way is to catch them in a lie once, then the next time if they are doing the same things, they are more than likely lying again.
