if you're considering medication to help, a few friends had great success with chantix.

all I know if you use the patch, be sure you take it off, when you are supposed to, the gum is a good idea. I pray you can do this, I have seen many of my family and friends die of emphesema, my uncle on oxygen, it is aweful to go down like that, your lungs turn gray, if you quit they get the pink color back, and become functional again, but don't put it off, putting things off, makes things less likely to happen, and then you will have to carry oxygen tanks all over, until you cannot breathe air anymore at all.

The human body is kinda programmed to stay away from things that hurt or make someone sick ... (of course, there are exceptions) ... have you ever eaten anything that made you sick, and next time you thought about eating it, you remembered how sick it made you and you stayed away from it. Try to think of something that totally grosses you out to the point that you would avoid by all means necessary ... and try to relate smoking a cigarette with it.

Mm, whichever method you choose, during the process keep your mind busy.

Smoking is a 2 part addiction.

One part is the chemicals contained in the thing you're smoking. (cigarette, cigar, pipe, etc)

The other part is psychological. Much like dieting, if you think about thing you're not
supposed to have, you will naturally want it that much more.

So while your main method (patch, gum, therapy, etc) helps to take care of the
chemical addiction, keep yourself busy and your mind off of smoking, to ease
the mental addiction.

Good luck!  :)

You have to really WANT to quit... doing it just to save money or to be a good example isn't enough.. it won't work unless you really want to quit.

It's my understanding that the chemical addition is over in 3 days, the rest is pure mental. I quit cold turkey 45 years ago and I think it's the main reason I am still alive at 71 and my 2 younger siblings are not. One died of lung cancer at 58 and the other COPD at 65.

I won on the radio tickets to be hypnotized to quit smoking.  Not too convinced that was the thing that made me stop or not, because I was ready anyways...
either way, I am very glad to say I am a non-smoker now!  I still went through hell after I quit.  There were many days that I layed in my bed, rolled up in a ball
crying  :crybaby2: - every time I thought about smoking!!!!  So, I agree...keep yourself as busy as you can!  Be strong, you can do it, and it is well worth it in the end.

A good suggestion I was given is to cut down your cigarette smoking by 1 cigarette a day or every other day if that works best for you.  I also have friends that have been successful with medication, but do some research on the adverse reactions.

Sunflower seeds and keeping your hands busy. When you feel weird do something to blow steam.
