Buddhism Question
« on: February 23, 2010, 06:10:54 pm »
I am writing a paper of Buddhism and I was wondering if anyone could point me to a decent text where Buddha explains his concept that there is no fixed reality under anything, and that once we remove the layers of deception that our perception allows us, there is no reality left.

Another text I am looking for is one where he explains why nirvana ought to be sought out.

I have looked around on the internet for these texts, but I cannot seem to find any good ones.

Random question, but is there a weight requirement for Buhddists? Ya know, the Buddha was quite a fat fella from what I've seen.

Nobody really knows how the fat Buddha thing started. Buddha was a skinny guy. I believe that they show him fat because he is all happy and enjoying life, not worrying about silly things like weight.

It has nothing to do with the OP's question, but the 'fat Buddha' is the Chinese Buddha named Pu-Tai. It became popular to depict Siddhattha Gautama Buddha (the true/original Buddha) as the fat and jolly Chinese one even though the two have nothing to do with each other.

Nirvana is the most enlightened and blissful state that one can achieve, so it is the premise of what a practicing Buddhist strives for. If you want a good, basic explanation of Buddhism, you might want to look at: http://www.leaderu.com/orgs/probe/docs/buddhism.html.

I have studied Buddhism (and a LOT of other beliefs) for many years and it's very difficult to explain, but that site might help you. Hmmm, I feel like I am helping someone out with their homework.  ;)
