Family Vacations
« on: March 01, 2010, 09:20:19 am »
I would love to hear about your "Family Vacations" of when you were young with your parents - NOT as adults.
Where did you go, was it in a car, bus, boat?  What was the worst, which was the best?   I'll start...

My family and I drove (yes in a car...) from Yakima, Washington to Mt. Rushmore.  We also stopped a various places along the way including the Devils Tower.  My sister and I wore out our cassette tape of "The Judds" as we drove my parents singing every word of every song!  Between the fighting with my sister for space in the back seat, I really had the time of my life!

Worst and 2nd best - was when we went to Oceans Shore.  I had a lot of fun there, until I got Tonsillitis and we ended up cutting that vacation short. :(

Can't wait to hear from all of you!!

The more appropriate name for Devil's Tower is Bear Lodge......
Or perhaps.......
Carving the likeness of man on Mt. Rushmore or even Crazy Horse MT., for that matter, is the utmost in sacrilegious ego and should be boycotted by anyone who believes in Creator in any form.

My favorites?

Either Mammoth Cave or Cocoa Beach (I think it was Cocoa).

We stayed at a lodge near the cave and during the day I went out on a hike by myself. I was in 8th grade and all alone. I ended up walking many miles out and found a river and rested there for a bit. Then I heard this bird...the sort of bird you hear in the movies when there's some dangerous monster lurking about. It scared me enough to keep moving! Then I ended up hurting my ankle bad while trudging up this high hill when...out of no where...this fawn jumps down behind me about 10 feet away and just stares at me for a minute. No exhaggeration. We stared at eachother for a whole minute before it just ran down the hill more. I just watched it run away and then kept walking. I kept finding small cave entrances littered around but I obviously didn't go in them. But that was the highlight of the trip for me. Oh, and the actual cave was cool too.

Cocoa Beach rocked. I think I was a freshman in HS. My bro and I swam in the ocean then we ate at the huge pier. We heard that there was going to be a shuttle launch that night so we stayed around, but then some clouds came in and they cancelled it. So we ended up walking down the beach. It was dark then...but suddenly the whole sky just turned orange. EVERYTHING lit up. And then in the distance the shuttle took off and everyone was clapping and praising it. It looked like a nuke going off for the first few seconds. I guess the boys at NASA just said "ah screw it let's just launch it".

To anyone who would want to see this-- there's only a few shuttles launching before they retire them! Go see it!

I'd have to say my favorite vacation was to Lego Land!  That place was absolutely the coolest thing when I was a kid.  We got to spend all day looking at the  amazing statues they built out of legos, and even play with some myself :)
