Last week I went to church - I realized that in order to maintain my relationship with the Lord, I need to keep up my fellowshiping with other believers.  This will strengthen my walk with the Lord and my own heart.  That is what church is meant to do.

Which Lord are you talking about there are many Lords in the bible besides Jesus.

Hebrews 10:23-27 Reads  23  Let us hold fast the public declaration of our hope without wavering, for he is faithful that promised. 24  And let us consider one another to incite to love and fine works, 25  not forsaking the gathering of ourselves together, as some have the custom, but encouraging one another, and all the more so as YOU behold the day drawing near.  26 For if we practice sin willfully after having received the accurate knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice for sins left, 27 but [there is] a certain fearful expectation of judgment and [there is] a fiery jealousy that is going to consume those in opposition.

Notice verse 26 clearly anyone who really knows the bible and still practices sin makes Jesus sacrifice in vain.  This scandals shake my faith but i'm not going to stop.

It is because our morals do NOT come from god or the Bible that we know such scandals are wrong.

Your morals are still coming from the bible whether you believe it or not. I can understand why some people become atheists due to religious hypocrisy.

Last Sunday.  Actually Sunday is my favorite day of the week.  My husband and I go to church in the morning and evening and it gives me the spiritual food that I need for the week.

That is very presumptuous of you to speak for my morals.  I am correct that the average American's morals do not come from the Bible, otherwise they wouldn't ignore the countless horrible things it instructs us to do (and if you aren't aware of these horrible things, you obviously haven't read your Bible very closely).  It is our EVOLVED SOCIETY that dictates most people's morals -- what is generally considered best for the livelihood of most people.  We still have a ways to go in some areas (like rights for gays) and obviously there *are* some religious nuts out there that do take their holy books seriously, but in general, I'm so thankful that y'all ARE hypocrites when it comes to the Bible/Koran/etc.!

And I didn't become an atheist because Catholics like to touch little boys (it makes no difference to me what a pedophile's religious stance is).  I became an atheist because I wanted to know what people's reasons were for not believing in god, and upon doing a good deal of research on it, opened my eyes to how I'd been deceived by religious claims and how my critical thinking had been in hibernation.

It still comes from the bible, they just changed it, hence the hypocritical in god we trust everywhere etc. The so called new morals that goes against the bible is spoken of in the bible already so your morals STILL come from the bible.  I just did a study on the wheat and weeds parable which gives me a better understanding of why bad things happen in religious organizations even if they are or claiming to follow the bible(you yourself must find the religion that follows their holy book the most and then see if the holy book your studying is the least babylonian).

Quote:  How my critical thinking had been in hibernation.

Your critical thinking wasn't in hibernation because you went to church, it was in hibernation because you didn't research or meditate on what you read, and thus you were easily deceived into thinking you weren't "thinking critically" by people. Not Everyone that goes to their place of worship are completely uneducated, one of the people I know used to fly American airline planes. Everything you think is new is the same under the sun and it happened already, pornography was around back then(that's were we get the peeping tom idea from), the human eye is the original television and storytelling is also a precursor to the T.V. Birds and some other animals had GPS long before we invented it.  People had their version of batteries back then, the Egyptians tried out their own version of the light bulb etc. In time you'll hopefully be deceived less and less by this matrix but I can only hope.

You could randomly pick a book from Barnes & Noble and "read into it" however you like.  You seem to be saying here that you think it's perfectly okay that god is a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, and sexist bully.  That god TRULY DOES want us to stone and eat our children (to name one of MANY examples), but the fact that we don't do this is just showing "rebellion".  Seriously??

Trust me, during that time I did have instances were I justified things taught by Christianity; I went to Bible studies and even consulted many of the websites believers like to throw around on here.  However, you are making grand assumptions once again.  One of the keys to why I was able to get away from religion relatively quickly was because I wasn't raised religiously.  When a person is not raised religiously, their mind is not tainted and brainwashed from a young age.  It's a lot easier to see the bullsh*t if you never grew up having dogma forced down your throat both before, during, and after a stint with religion.  Like I've said before, I was an atheist before I decided to give Christianity a try, but the only evidence I had was that I could see no such god in everyday life.  When I started to question the many things that simply can never be properly "justified" by religion, I realized I was right all along when I was first an atheist at 13, remembered the day I decided to give god a try on a whim, and recognized it is only because I got swept away by a fun church that I had ever believed at all.  ** It was me who realized I hadn't been thinking critically as a Christian, no one else. **

I never said all religious people are uneducated.  Some people can be very bright when it comes to all facets off their life, except they have this compartmentalized crazy when it comes to religion.

I have no idea what your point is here.

I have a daily Bible Study I do online every day. The church is inside us, We are the body of Christ, and Christ is the church. Our bodies are a temple to house the Holy Spirit. So when asking the last time I went to church, I never left. There are many different churches and many different focuses, and what you learn from the one your are attending is the most important, are you simply going for a thing to do on sundays with the family, do you think it will get you to heaven, is it for show, is it social, or do you truly go to fellowship and worship our Lord. Do you truly go to become closer to God, or do you go to church to plan events and socials. Church is important for bringing the body of Christ together, but if each member is not understanding what their part is, it can make some churches fall apart. We all need to look at this, and build our relationship with our Father more. We need to realize our Savior sacrifices for us, has cleansed us and set us free, then we go to church and give thanks, in worship sharing with others.

:notworthy: WOW ! GREAT WORDS ! I am with you. - I agree all the way. Physically I went to church last night. We had the Monthly Birthday Celebration for our children.

Last time I've been to church was 5 year's ago when my cousin got married. It isn't because I don't believe in God, I believe there's a God, I just don't believe in religion or tithing...(just so the Preacher can turn around and chastise us about not having strong enough faith and that's why some of us are poor, but they are the one's that are making him rich.)
