At what age do you think it is appropriate to let a child have a facebook account?

My eight year old has an account. If you the parent/grandparent, ect. set it up there are ways NO one can search your childs name, No one can see pictures, NO one can view their profile. And no one can ask to be friends with your child. I have alot of respect and trust with my kids so I do not worry with her. She knows that she can add her friends in real life and NO fake ones. Many talks have been made with my daughter about the FAKE people online.
So in a nutshell I bealive when you and your child feel comfortable and they realize that the internet is not all fun, but it can be if you follow the rules. O and my daughter loves her facebook page. There are tons of little games that she likes alot.

my 9yr old has one. No one can see his info at all....nothing to see with the privacy I put up. He isn't on very often and he is on there to play like two of the games. As long as a parent is in control and watches the child and checks the acct, I don't see a problem.

I'm 60 and I'm not sure I'm old enough for a Facebook account. I have come to believe that social media membership requires the same level of judgement as that is necessary to drive a vehicle. If your kid has the smarts to drive a car at nine then I suppose a Facebook account is ;) OK

I think a child should be 16 to have a facebook account.  I also think that children need to be closely monitored while using facebook or any internet site.

I think it's set at 13 for a reason.  Younger kids shouldn't have an account.  Too many creeps out there!!!  Even with privacy settings, I'm still wary of the smart creeps that figure out ways into accounts.
