Rising Food Costs
« on: May 19, 2010, 10:10:18 am »
I don't understand why food is so expensive anymore, especially since the gov't says there is no inflation!  Its outragous!!! Every trip to the store means another $10 in food costs. Cereal  $3 per box, even peanut butter is now $3.
I was eating cereal alot for my dinner because it was cheaper than meat, but now its just as expensive. How is prices in your area for food?

yep, the price of food here is not fantastic either.  when one has to buy specific things and does not have the luxury of "anything will do,"  it becomes even more difficult.  I scour the internet for coupons related to the food items I can eat.  I work at avoiding buying anything full price.  food pantries are an invaluable source of aid as well.

Oh God, yes! Even the cheap-o stores like Family Dollar are raising prices by 20 cents or more. I'm clipping coupons like crazy and mostly buy knock off brands unless I'm really craving it or the quality is worth the price. It doesn't help that certain members of the family go through GALLONS of milk and juice overnight, then don't buy any like there's a magical beverage fairy. They also believe in toiletries fairies, TP anyone? :/

I have seen that too. It is ridiculous. Times are tough, trying to make ends meet. Something gotta give. Money decrease prices increase.

It is ridiculous! I shop at Save-a-lot! Love that store! I don't know how someone can make ends meet if they are only making minimum wage!

My brother warned me about a year ago that food prices were going to continue to rise.  He said most people would think when gas prices went down, food prices would go down too, but his info from inside his industry was that the price rise was not due to gas prices (transporting food - there was some of that, but not the major factor)...but the major culprit was corn.  Yep, corn.

Apparently there was legislation that went through that required corn growers to set aside 25% of their crop for ethanol production.  The farmers don't get paid for it, or get paid very little.  What this means is there is now a shortage of corn for everything else that needs it - thus the price of corn is going up.  Due to that, anything that has a corn component will also go up to some degree.  Items like livestock that feeds on corn (beef, chicken, ham...), cereals that contain corn, anything with high fructose corn syrup, etc.

Granted, now-a-days there is also the complication of the economy on top of it - but that is one of the major factors in the current high prices of food.

the costs of producing foods are increasing....maybe rising food costs (kind of like gas prices) will force us to eat less and be healthier....

I agree that food has gone up.  I use to be able to get groceries for 2 weeks and spend only $80 and now I spend $150 or more.
