Garage Sale Help!
« on: June 01, 2010, 10:13:15 am »
I'm having a garage sale coming up. My first one so I'm not sure of how much to price my items. I have a 5pc. bedroom set 5yrs. old, in very good condition. I was thinking $300 for it. What do you think? And for toddler shirt and pants and toddler spiderman bed set. And, playstation game console about two yrs. old. Give me your ideas. THANKS A BUNCH!!!

Depending on the condition. People can go to a store usually and find something for around that price, so I would come a little down to what you might consider a bargain, sometimes we put a value on something according to us, when we need to be looking at what the common person would pay, if we are going to make any money at this, we have to make things a little cheaper, also ladies and gentlemen, when I go to a garage sale, I look at prices on items first, if I see a few things overprices, I generally make up my mind right away, that every thing is going to be a rip off, and dont' buy anything, sometimes a quick browse, then I move on to a better garage sale, where I am not wasting my time and can find a bargain, so keep that in mind when having a garage sale, it is just like a store, reel them in and keep them looking until they find what they want.

yeah, you really need to find a price that you feel is a good deal for yourself and that the buyer would see as a bargain. a person that goes to a yard/garage sale wants a bargain, they are looking for a good deal or else they would just go buy a brand new one from the store, right?

Thats a good starting price for the bed then you can negotiate from there.  You could even go a little higher to come down from there.   Down here for clothes (kids) down here people put .50c and up to $5.00.  Kids beds go here for $75.00 to $100 for used ones.  Sometimes even lower.  Really depends on your area and how people spend money there.  Ride around your area see if anyone has a garage sale going look at there pricing on different things.  Hope all goes well.  Always remember people will try to get things cheaper than whats being asked so make sure your ready to deal.  Makes sure you have plenty of change to work with go to bank and get plenty of One's, Five's, and a few Ten's.  This is so you can make change.

GOOD LUCK!!!

the other thing you can do is make a bright colorful sign that says "let's talk!" or and put it on the big items. then the person will have to come up to you to get the price and you can negotiate from there. this way the person is not immediately turned off by a $300 price tag :)

I define "fair market value" as being "whatever someone is willing to pay for it". If they are willing to pay $100.00, then it must be worth $100.00.

$300 for 5 pce set = good.  Used playstation is about $25 in a store...take it from there.  Clothes aren't worth more than about 25 cents per piece here...

no! dont price them too high. no one will buy them or they will try to talk u down. if u really want to get rid of it sell it cheap but dont screw urself. the 5 piece bedset might not sell at 300$ coz usually people who go to garage sales dont carry that much on them. probably 100 at the most. i barely carry nething when i go. ok, u gotta take into consideration how old the stuff is, if it's been damaged, how much u got it for when it was new, if it's real wood, real nething. u never know it just might sell though.. u can still take that chance. if u dont sell it within the first 2 days then i would come down on the price if u really want to get rid of it. ok, kids clothes go for like 0.25-2.00 depending on what it is and if it's new. ok, the sheet set.. if it's fairly new u can put like 5$ on it. if it's a whole bed set i would say 20 but... if u price stuff too high they will look and not buy and u will get frustrated. and u have the right to say no to people if u think the price they offer isnt reasonable. dont just take the offer ok, really think about it first.

I disagree with the last comment, really depending on the condition of the 5 piece bedroom set I believe $300.00 is a steal!!! I just had a garage sale myself and all my clothes which were name brand I only had marked .25 cents a piece, I wanted to get rid of them as we had no room. They went pretty darn quick too. I marked mine for a quarter also as I did not want to carry so much stuff to the local thrift store. If you are going to donate like I did mark stuff cheap. That way you make easy money before donating.

We always price things fair if they are really good items we don't mind keeping if they don't sell. And put really cheap prices on items we want gone.

One thing I learned is someone will always try to talk you down or make a deal.
So I just make a mental not of the lowest I will go on an item.

i have to agree, start with what you feel you should get then add ten bucks, then you can lower as need and you dont feel like you cheated them or yourself!
