Has anyone ever been to Saudi Arabia? Do you have any advice for an American going there for the first time?

Have not, but would definitely like to get out possibly to there and a few other countries in my lifetime.

1.Get an Arabic phrase book.
2. If you're a man, get some really good sunblock, a hat, and white clothing to reflect the relentless sun. Dont't try to talk to any female outside your family for ANY reason; you might get arrested. If you're a woman, buy a chador (long veil) or the religious police might beat you. Females should also resign themselves to spending lots of time indoors with no chance to speak to any man unless he's in your family. Otherwise, the religious police will arrest you.
2. Learn about their culture. It's as different from ours as Pluto is from Planet Earth!!!! Things we consider perfectly innocent upset them, while they have customs that we might find pretty horrifying (no exaggeration there). If you're lucky, you might get to see quaint little rituals like The Stoning of an Adulteress or The Amputation of a Thief's Right Hand.

Have fun!

Thanks for the advice! Hopefully the stoning and amputations will be kept to a minimum.
