Preemies
« on: July 20, 2010, 02:13:52 pm »
How many of you are the parent of a preemie? What kind of challenges do you face daily? I am the mom of a preemie. My daughter ( Ashleigh ) was born at 25 weeks and is currently 9 months old. She is not sitting up by herself unless she is held up. She is trying oh so hard to get her foot up to her mouth and gets mad because she's not able too yet. she is not allowed baby food yet because she cannot sit up by herself. She only gets 6 ounces every 4 hours. She has came a long way. I can still remember the day she was born. It seems like yesterday.

My oldest daughter (she is 20 now) was a preemie. She was 3month early and weighed 3 lbs 14 ounces.
She spent a month and a half in the hospital before coming home. She didn't know how to breathe or eat. She has asthma now because of the ventilator but she is also alive because of it. Every thing she did was out of sync with what a normal baby does and the doctor explained it like this. He said she is young for her age. A full term baby that was born at the exact same time and day as she was is still older. She will always be young for her age. She needed time to "catch up" to other babies.

my daughter Ashleigh weighed 1 pound 9.9 ounces. The doctors told us the first 48 hours we needed to hold our breath. She was able to breathe on her own the first 5 days but then needed oxygen. I was so glad when my boyfriend and I were finally able to hold her. We had to wait 2 months and the day we held her we also got to hear her cry for the first time. It was so difficult. She spent almost 5 months in the hospital. She is now a happy 9 month old.

Don't worry your angel is a special baby as all preemies are. They just need a little extra love and care. I hope you have a preemie baby book! I was given one at the airforce base she was in the hospital there (they didn't have a neonatal unit any where close back then).

I have two preemies. One born three months early and one born 6 weeks early. My first preemie is 10 now and he is so healthy you would never know that he was just under 4lbs at birth. My 7 month old is the 6 week preemie and this kid is a tank! He was 5lbs 6oz at 34 weeks and you would never tell he was early. He is hitting all his milestones. Every one is different. ::)

you cannot really tell my daughter was so small at birth. She weighs about 20 pounds now. It amazes me that something so tiny can survive and teach you so many things.

Anything over 5 lbs isn't considered a preemie as far as I know.

When I went to the hospital to have my little preemie angel I didn't even look pregnant. They asked me what was wrong and I said I think I am having my baby. And the response I got was "Your pregnant ?"

yeah you couldn't tell I was either. I only gained 5 pounds and lost 20 after having my daughter.
