i just can not understand why people are so willing, and eager for that matter, to waste that much money on ONE DAY!!! yes, a couple's wedding is (or at least should be) one of the most important days of their lives but is it really worth it to go into debt for it? we had a very simple wedding, the whole thing cost less than $500, with very few guests (our kids, siblings and parents, i.e: the people we love most in the world) but it was still an amazing day, a memory that will never leave my mind or my heart. i did not need to wear a designer gown, i found a beautiful dress that fit me perfectly, was the 1950s style that we wanted for our wedding and was less than $40 at a small locally owned dress shop. my "maid of honor" was my sister and her dress was also bought from that store for less than $30. the store owner was such a doll that she even threw in a dress for my "flower girl", my 2 month old daughter, for free. my flowers were also free, cut fresh by our neighbor from her beautiful flower garden. we did not waste a cent on a photographer, merely asked that everyone bring their digital cameras and take as many pictures as they could, that i later went through to pick out the ones i wanted to create a beautiful album. we did not spend any money on caterers because my mother and mother-in-law made a delicious buffet of food, and i made my wedding cake myself. most importantly, i was not stressed or upset during wedding planning, there were not any "bridezilla" moments because we kept things so simple.

This sounds like the worst wedding ever.

wow, i can not believe how incredibly rude your comment was.
and not that i have to expain myself to anyone, my post was not out of jealousy for what these people have and were able to spend on their wedding, it was my personal opinion about the situation.
That doesn't sound like the worst wedding ever at all. Actually it sounds like you did very well. Even better that you didn't have to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars. Spending too much money for people you hardly even know to share a day that hardly even lasts a day when you don't have the money for it...now that's the worst wedding ever.

At least the money went into the American economy.  I think that if they have that money and they want to spend it that way, go for it.  It seems like a waste to us, but what the heck?  Plus, can you imagine if they had left the roads open and had hotel rooms available for other guests?  It's not really Chelsea's fault that her parents are what they are-why should her wedding be ruined by people with TV cameras and Enquirer reporters running around everywhere?

Whatever.  It's their money.  The economy's bad, so I guess Chelsea was supposed to have her wedding at a landfill and wear a dress made of napkins from Subway?   :dontknow:

I was washing my hair that day, or I would've went to it.  ;)
The point of a wedding is the joining of the two people before God, their families and friends, and/or whoever/whatever you may believe in. It doesn't matter how much or how little you spend, as long as you remember what the day is REALLY about.

thank you, i too think we did very well. it was an amazing and memorable day and the best part is that once it was done, it was DONE. we did not have wedding related bills after that day, like my cousin who has been married for 3 years and is still paying off her credit cards.  :)

If your husband really loved you, he would have spent money for a photographer.

Now...that's hot.  That's what Jared said.

I can think of an entire list of things that they could have spent their money on, but...not my wedding.  My husband and I got up, went to the courthouse, got our marriage license, called the Rabbi, and were married at two that day.  Very cheap, very simple, but very much what we wanted.  I didn't want a big wedding...I've never liked the idea of being the center of attention.  However, so many little girls dream of getting married and start planning their wedding when they are barely out of diapers.  And EVERYONE knows the wedding is supposed to be about the bride (and groom, but mostly the bride), so as long as she was happy, then so be it.  I agree with klkwid; the money went back into the American economy.

This is a hateful and sexist remark.  How do you know she isn't the one who has the higher paying job?  And why are you so eager to post sarcastic and snotty comments about everything?

first of all, you are such an A$$!
secondly, my husband loved me enough to marry me, which means more than anything.
thirdly, my husband offered to spend more on the wedding, to use the $9000 limit on one credit card and I SAID NO! i planned the wedding i wanted and spent the amount of money i wanted to spend on it.
lastly, if you are married, i feel sooo sorry for your wife

Wow, what an uproar. Do you honestly think the daughter of a past prez is going to have a small affair? Besides, look at where Bill and Hillary made most of their money - illegally in deals while living in Arkansas.

mommagoes, what is the point in comparing your wedding to their's and why defend yourself so adamantly -you don't need to.

Hmm, I wonder if Ken Starr will have someone collecting any bridesmaid dresses for 'forensic' evidence..... ;D

Yeah I'm surprised at people's reactions over this too. They're not the first people to have an extravagant wedding.

they spent all that money and it was frivolous but i agree that it went back to the economy. i didn't spend anything on either of my weddings. more effort went into planning my first one and it ended in misery. my second marriage was a simple affair with a few family members and i married the most incredible man in the world! so really it doesn't matter in my opinion how big or small as long as you are marrying the right person.

i will admit though that if i had loads of cash to spend i would probably go overboard and have a fairytale wedding.  :)

I personally don't see the point in even getting married at all, but that's just me. It's non of my concern how she or anyone else for that matter spends their money on anything. Her parents are public figures who have that kind of money to spend. Yes the money could have went to better use, but thousands of other people waist thousands of dollars on worse things than a wedding everyday..
