Leadership vs Management

Are leadership and management one in the same or are they different?  Which is more important?  Why?

I think that It's one & the same or equally important. Without leadership there is no management & vice versa. If everybody wants to be the Captain & there are no sailors to run the ship, that ship is sunk! If you have all sailors & no Captain then when serious decision making skills are needed & nobody takes action, the ship is sunk!

I think they are totally different.

Management -- people put in positions of authority
Leadership -- people the skills and knowledge and ABILITY to lead people

good managers may also be leaders, but not always and certainly not all leadership are "managers"

I agree.  I couldn't say it any better myself...

I have had managers that were horrible leaders but were great at distributing tasks.  and some of the best co-workers i have worked with were great leaders but they were not managers...

Leadership is something a person does to better others, management is a job someone is paid to do.

Nicely stated...  I don't think it could have been stated...

They have similar qualities, but just because you are a "manager" does not mean that you have effective leadership skills.  Good leadership among other things means leading and motivating a group of people.  I personally had experience with a manager where I worked before that had poor leadership qualities, but had strong company knowledge, industry experience and so on.  Just because you are knowledgeable about the company, the industry, have experience, etc., does not mean that you are equipped to lead and motivate a group of people successfully.   It takes a special person to be a true leader.
