Can MONEY buy you happiness?
« on: August 15, 2010, 05:22:56 pm »
I have a friend on FB that I've known forever. She 's to post her LAVISH lifestyle online. The question is- is she doing this because she's insecure and needs people to sweat her or she truly loves to show off?  She's not a bad looking grl (she's even tried to model), is married and all.   But will you like her better if she post her BMW, her husband GUCCI shoes, or her 3,500 monthly RENT.

i think people should like you for you. NOt for what you own. I have another friend that makes a hella lot more that she doesn't flaunt her money.

Well, money answers all things, but can't buy you happiness.  If your rich, I think you have a tendency to trust in your wealth, and that can become a downfall.  Money (as the Beatles sang it) can't buy you love.  If I was rich, I'd be afraid of someone loving me for my dough.  Would my friends be real or just fair weather friends?  A lot of people with money are not happy.

Being financially secure would be nice, but not to the point of not having to work toward any goals, monetary or otherwise.  If I won the lottery, I'd maybe buy myself a better car, and travel a lot more, but that's about it.  Of course the older you get (like me), the more you want to simplify your life.  I have 3 favorite charities I'd like to donate a bundle to.

Money would surely buy me happiness.  It would give me a better sense of financial security and the freedom to know that I can live however I want to live without having to worry about pinching pennies.  Things wouldn't make me happy.  I wouldn't use it to go over board buying stuff.  It would also make me happy because if I were filthy rich with more money than I'd know what to do with I'd use that money to help other people and it would make me happy improving the lives of others.

Money can buy me somethings.
For example right now I have cancer and have had it for 5 years it would help my husband and my finacial stress.
I wouldn't feel like a burden and I would be able to pay for all my meds without issues. A
nother thing it would help my family buy a home instead of living in an apartment.
So to an extent it would make me happy. But truely? No, money isn't the answer for everything in life.
Even the rich complain and feel lonely at times. So it's just one of those things in my life that's a 50% happiness because it can't make me fully happy.

I think maybe you shouldn't read to much into it. I mean you did say she is married, so maybe she just likes to let everyone know what she gets.
Maybe its more of a pride thing for your friend than a slap in the face with what she has.

She sounds like she is insecure and maybe even unhappy with her lifestyle.  No, money cannot buy happiness and it has been shown that people with a lot of money are some of the most unhappy people around.

OF COURSE money can buy you happiness, because money is *required* for purchasing the activities and adventures you enjoy.  Money is not a guarantee of happiness, however, which is what I think the cliche should state.  "Too much of a good thing" applies here.
"It is far better to grasp the universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring."

I agree we should not just be friends with someone because of what he or she has.  We should develop relationships with others based on getting to know them and building a relationship. Being there for each other thru the ups and downs.  Encouraging one another and at times keeping each other in check when necessary.  You should never be above someone being able to speak into your life and help you to stay grounded and on track.

Money could totally buy me happiness, because it would make me happy to be able to get whatever I wanted. And give my son whatever he asks for, and know that when he turns 16 he'll have a car and at 18 he can go to college without debt. But I'd be pissed if I found that my friends were only hanging out with me because I had nice things and lots of cash.
Your friends should be your friends because you want them to be your friends. You picked them over all the other dumbasses in the world because you don't mind being around them, not because you can ride around in their mercedes and spend their money.
