The Library of Congress to Archive Twitter Messages
« on: August 27, 2010, 08:14:29 pm »
As mentioned on Inside Track:  According to them, our nation's most prestigious library will be archiving a collection of twitter messages.  This would include every single tweet from launches to record launches from Brittany Spears, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift who supposedly have the most twitter followers of any artist.

Who is going to take the time to look these up?
With so many things going on in the present, I can't see where I'd be interested to know who tweeted what on a random day 10 years ago.

About 90% of their database is going to be spam or advertising.

Well, wether its spam or not, I guess the Library of Congress, considers it part of American Culture or whatever.  Twitter is something that is happening right now.  Who cares if some of those tweet includes spam and advertising and who knows if Twitter is going to be around in the next 100 years.  This is probably why there would be a twitter collection added to the Library of Congress.  Just think 10 years ago, tweeting, social networks, ptc, etc.  was unheard of.  Who knows what other technology or software are going to be used in the next couple of years.  Also, its all depends on what you these twitter for.  Some people use every social network for every opportunity to spam, but you can also use the same social networks for updating relatives about events, contacting classmates, and several other productive things.  For example this year, on Facebook, I got in contact with classmates from my elementary school.  These were people that I had not seen in 38 years.  These were people that I use to play tag with.  If someone had told us 38 years from now your are going to meet up on something called Facebook and plan a elementary school reunion at a time when social networking or even computers weren't even a thought, do you think we would have believed that person.

Why?  Why waste even an iota of space on that?
