Tobacco

We all know it has over 4000 chemicals. But does anyone on here know WHY they put so many chemicals in it?

There is this store called smoke and stuff or something and it smells so good in there, it is pipe tobacco...my dad  would get them in different scents and it smelt nice like vanilla and there was some other scents. That is just pure tobacco if I am not mistaken.
i've found pure tobacco online, and tobacco seeds. I thought nicotine was the addictive product in it. why not just eliminate everything else. all the other stuff seems pointless

Nicotine is what makes them addicting.  http://www.quit-smoking-stop.com/harmful-chemicals-in-cigarettes.html.  I have seen many different theories as to why they put these chemicals in cigarettes I personally believe they put chemicals in them to make them burn faster so you need to smoke more to get your nicotine fix obviously to make more money.  The sooner a smoker runs out the sooner they run to the store and spend more money on their product.  It would be pretty lengthy research to find out exactly why they put each one of the 4000 chemicals in them.

Food requires ingredients lists on the labels to tell allergic information. aside from the fact that 4000 ingredients wont fit on a pack of cigarettes, shouldn't they require an ingredient list to warn of chemical allergen information?

One would think they should be required to for that very reason.  That would be some tiny print to fit on a pack lol

I imagine they consider that if you are willing to slowly kill yourself by inhaling smoke on purpose then you probably won't care if you kill yourself quickly with an allergic reaction  :o

my GF said the same thing when i asked her her opinion on it. but smoking dosen't nessecarily mean you will die from it. your risks are just increased. But what about people around you or your kids in the house. shouldn't you know in case they are allergic to the chemicals?

weeeellll second hand smoke is already causing them serious health problems so if you don't care about that then why care about allergies?? i'm not trying to be mean, i used to be a smoker so i know how hard it is to quit but....smoking is horrible for your health and the health of everyone else around you. even just the smoke from your clothes and hair can cause someone to have an asthma attack! i just don't think if someone is willing to inhale 4000 chemicals into their body that they really give a damn about allergies.

You do have a point Shern. maybe all those additives should just be illegal, it would save a lot of lives

Not defending smokers or anything but I think most people that smoke are so addicted to the nicotine they don't even notice or care what the effects of it are to people around them.  I have always had strict no smoking rule in our home even when my hubby smoked.  If he wanted to smoke he had to do it outside even if it was -0 outside. Thankfully he's considerate to our health and went outside with no arguments.  But I see how others people just light up wherever they don't even think about it being harmful to everyone in the room and certainly don't think into enough to be concerned with allergies.  Now when our daughter was a baby no one smoked anywhere near her I am just curious why the change at a certain age? Who decides when its acceptable to smoke around children and what age?  In my opinion its never OK.  I grew up around smoke filled air and I had severe allergies.  Even today when I'm around a lot of people smoking at the same time my allergies start acting up but do they even notice of course not.

It's the same with my husband Alyia. He smokes outside, and he knows how much it upsets me that he smokes in the first place so I never even know when he actually does it lol. I'm in agreement though, it's never okay to smoke around children, or anybody for that matter who is sensitive to it or has health issues. Basically...all the smokers need to lump in one room and leave the non smokers in healthy peace lol.

My dad smoked around us as kids and my two of my sisters are severely asthmatic, my mom has to have breathing treatments every time my dad lights up and my niece who lives with them now is developing asthma. It's just very selfish and irresponsible to smoke around people who are not smokers themselves and especially children.

I have been trying to quit for about 2 months now. i know how bad it is for me, and it's not a good investment either. anybody got any tips that would help? i've tried chewing gum, it just dosen't work. and i hate that it's so hard to stop. i ask myself "why am i smoking?" everytime i light one up. I just keep smoking.

I think different things work for different people. For me, someone told my 4 year old that if I kept smoking I was going to die and so the next time she saw me light up, she grabbed my leg and cried her little heart out that she didn't want me to die. It was a little dramatic but I felt so small right then and there and so selfish that I was hurting my body for a few moments of pleasure and here my baby needs her momma to be healthy and strong for her.

So I decided right then and there to stop and I just did. I still get tempted every now and then and I have taken a hand full of puffs since that day 7 years ago, but being here and healthy for my babies was motivation for me. My husband....that's not enough for him and he has tried quitting several times and hasn't managed yet. I think each person just has to find the strongest most motivating reason for them to quit and that will keep them going.

Most important I think is when people try quitting and they slip up and smoke, they just think "well I already screwed up today, I'll start over tomorrow" and then the screw up the next day so it's a cycle that doesn't quit lol. If you mess up and smoke, just say...you know what that's ok. I WON'T smoke the next one. The next urge that comes around...follow through. It's a day by day, sometimes even hour by hour self determination. And you always keep your motivator in your mind so you have the strength to put it down.

My best advice. It's lame but it's all I got

That was actually pretty helpful, shern. Thnx. I always slip up and smoke and i usually just say "im not going to buy another pack". then my GF will because i won't and temptation will overcome me. but im going to run with what you gave me, and start looking for my motivation. ;)
