Another reason for me to stay away from Facebook
« on: October 18, 2010, 06:24:17 am »
I have never trusted Facebook, or any other social networking sites, because they are NOT secure, no matter what they say. If you use any banking info for a company tied to Facebook, and people do it all the time, you put yourself at risk right there. Now, through yet another Facebook 'glitch' personal info is out there. I just saw this in today's Wall Street Journal:

Facebook in Privacy Breach
Top-Ranked Applications Transmit Personal IDs, a Journal Investigation Finds.

Many of the most popular applications, or "apps," on the social-networking site Facebook Inc. have been transmitting identifying information—in effect, providing access to people's names and, in some cases, their friends' names—to dozens of advertising and Internet tracking companies, a Wall Street Journal investigation has found.

The issue affects tens of millions of Facebook app users, including people who set their profiles to Facebook's strictest privacy settings. The practice breaks Facebook's rules, and renews questions about its ability to keep identifiable information about its users' activities secure.

For all of you addicted to FarmVille: Three of the top 10 apps, including FarmVille, also have been transmitting personal information about a user's friends to outside companies.

Maybe you don't give any of that info out, but this is from less than a year ago:
Quote
The process of using Facebook Credits is fairly straight forward. Users of an application are given the opportunity to make a purchase for upgraded features or for virtual goods and then are prompted to checkout via Use my Visa Card ending in.... or Add another Credit Source
Most of the applications are using Facebook as an alternative payment platform and while we currently don’t know the total volume of transactions being processed, I’d assume there has been at least a few million dollars worth of transactions run through the platform. Virtual transactions are accounting for an increasing percentage of Facebook platform revenue as games have proven to be the most successful applications to date.

you can block the invites.

You are correct Marieelissa.  Some people use FB just to connect with people they know and that's it.  I for one do not play any games or belong to any game clubs like Farmville, Mafia Wars, etc.  Just as soon as my website is up, I'll be deleting my FB account anyway.  Those who want to connect with me can do it there.

What in the world could you do according to banking?  Why would you want to?  They're not selling anything, unless your talking about the ads on the side which have their own website and you can deal with them directly.  However, buying anything on line is dangerous.  Putting your CC out in cyberspace IMO is just asking for trouble.

Facebook can be a fun place to visit and spend time on. However, you have to be very careful about the kind of personal information you share on that site and any other site like it.

Why would anyone have a bank account or a credit card linked to facebook? Do some of the games cost money or something?

I like Facebook but it comes with its problems. I don't have any of my info as far as phone number, money stuff, etc. That's silly, but many people pour money into facebook games like farmville. You can even buy farmville gift cards in walmart now!

One thing I found wrong with facebook was when adding your friend you had to put your phone number and I didn't like that at all.

I use Facebook to keep in contact with family primarily.  My husband's family is a two hour drive away, and I have family all over the country.  The easiest way to keep in contact is for me to link twitter to my facebook, and post pictures on my facebook.  I have a great deal of friends on facebook, but every person I have friended is someone that I have actually spoken to at some point in my life, whether it be high school, college, grad school, work, or FusionCash ;)  I am also considering using it as a small start up for some ideas I have to make extra money, such as designing pictures, video collages, or crafts.  When it is used carefully and properly, Facebook can be a good thing.
