I am 71 years old and retired 9 years ago but after a year at home I got a job at Wal mart as a people greeter.  I needed the extra money to live on and now have money to go on a few trips.  My cousin and I went to Panama City, Fla year before last but we did not go anywhere last year.  I had knee replacement this past January and did very well.  Now I can walk alot better and am able to go on another trip when I get enough time off from work.  I have 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 13 great grand Children.  I am in good health and I than God for that and hope to take a trip this summer this year if I do not have to go by myself.  May God bless each of you and keep you safe.

Welcome and it's nice to meet you!  I'm really glad you are doing well from your knee replacement!  I do hope you get to go on another trip - those are enjoyable!  Wow!  You are a busy grandmother/great-grandmother!  That's neat how many you have!  I have 3 grown children, and 2 grandchildren, with another on the way.  I love being Nana!  God bless you, too, and hope to see you plenty more!  :)

I hope you won't mind me long message this morning.  I've been up since 4:30 doing homework and the supper dishes are still in the sink.  I haven't had my shower yet and I have to leave in an hour so I'm feeling frantic but I just felt the need to vent.  I'm upset at the office manager where I'm interning because of a situation that I feel is unfair.  Two weeks ago Monday I went in to work and all but 2 out of a staff of 8 were not there.  The doctor, the nurse practioner, two medical assistants and the audiologist were all gone leaving nothing but the allergist and the front desk clerk.  When I arrived the other two girls told me I might as well leave as there was nothing to do.  So having better things to do than sit for 3 hours doing nothing...I went home.  Keep in mind that they never had any hours for me on Fridays because they close the office half a day or my hours would have been done much quicker.  Keep in mind too that I went in and worked on days when I had no school, Good Friday and the day after Easter because I knew they were open and had a busy schedule.

When the office manager had me sign my hours this week she had me marked as absent on that day.  I asked her about it and she said...you were scheduled to work.  I told her the situation but she refused to remove the absent mark.  This goes against my grade and I told her that.  She just shrugged and walked away.  I told her I would be contesting the mark and I will.  I don't think it is fair and it is her job to make sure her demands are clear and I was never told that I was to stay when the doctors were not in the office nor told not to leave when any of the other staff tells me to or suggests that I do so.

I used to be a supervisor and I feel I would have handled the situation differently and don't understand why people have to manage things the way she does/did with no sense of fairness.

I also had to write a graduation speech this morning and it made me sob and cry.  I'd like to share it with you....perhaps in reading you will understand some of the frustration I'm going through and get to know me a little better.  :)

I would like to thank my friends and family for being here this evening.  I want to thank each of you for putting up with my ranting and raving for the past 18 months too.  There were many days when I would become frustrated and threaten to quit and just go get a job.  After all, no woman who is close to 60 years old has any business being in school.  She’d have to be out of her mind to pursue a new career at that age when she should be studying manuals on retirement communities.

In 2009 I lost a job I loved and had worked at for over 20 years, due to outsourcing of my IT position to another country.  The land of the dot com industry that I knew and loved had changed.  Stumbling through a down economy with a lack of income, at nearly retirement age,  in a changing work landscape, placed me in Sharon, in school  at LTI.  In the words of John Lennon – Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.

Someday I hope that the changes I’ve had to go through will all make sense.  I will continue to try to laugh at the confusion, smile through the tears and keep reminding myself that  everything happens for a reason.

The staff here at LTI has been awesome and I will always have great things to say about their teaching abilities and dedication.  Many of the things they have taught me and things about each of their unique personalities will forever be ingrained in my mind… as long as I still have one.
I have learned many valuable tidbits of information and new skills that I hope will be evident to any new employer I might work for in the future.   I have always believed and said that one is never too old to learn something new.  The fact that I’m standing here this evening wearing a cap and gown is living proof of that belief.

I’d like to congratulate all the graduates on their achievements on this special occasion. I hope you will take the chance to thank those who have supported and guided you in your journey --- your parents, teachers, loved ones, friends and your community. I wish you every success in your future studies and endeavors.

In closing I’d like to share the following quote I ran across and relate to

Graduation is only a concept. In real life every day you graduate. Graduation is a process that goes on until the last day of your life. If you can grasp that, you'll make a difference. ~Arie Pencovici

Thank you for your attention and for lending me your ear.

Hi Kim,

I never mind any of your messages, whether long or short.  I feel for you and am glad you did write this message.  The situation with your office manager doesn't sound good.  You were the one who showed up for your work, only to find out no one contacted you about most not being there.  There was no work for you, and the 2 who were there told you that you could leave.  Were you to stand there and argue with them?  No, you did as they suggested.  I would definitely contest this - you did as you were told, what else does she expect?   :dontknow:   Who do go to about contesting it?  I'm praying and hoping they listen to you, take into consideration what happened that day, and give you the benefit of the doubt.  We're speaking of 3 hours, not a whole day, for goodness sakes.  I'd be very upset, too.  Hang in there and let me know what happens.

Your graduation speech is very good, very moving, and even has a couple spots of perfectly placed humor.  I like the quotes you included.  I like that you included what happened with your other job, which in essence led you to this job, because of how it worked with you with the financial end, while training for the field.  Thank you for sharing it with me - I feel honored!   8)  When do you have to give it?

I hope you sleep good tonight; hope you waited on those dishes until later; and I hope you had a much better and more relaxed evening than you did this morning.

Hugs,

Julie   :cat:

Kim, Your graduation speech was excellent.  It seems to be the story of so many in the past few years, and it was expressed brilliantly.  I found myself going back to school a few years ago.  I got my Associate's Degree at 65.  The circumstances were different, however.  I had the good fortune of having my employer pay for my tuition.  It had been my lifelong dream, to get a degree, and I was amazed that my employer paid for it.  I always said I wished that job had been around when I began my career.  It was the best job I ever had.  Best wishes to you.

Julie, I hope you will be feeling better soon.  I hate having a cold in the Spring, when the weather is getting nicer.

Julie,

I did speak with the school about the absence and they have agreed to take it off my record.  I will double check later to make sure they did and if not I want a letter added with my official complaint.

I will be glad when this intern is completed...a week from this Monday.

I won't have to give that graduation speech other than in our Communications class. Everyone had to write one.

I had to write a Children's story too so I wrote it about my daughter's new puppy.  The title is My Dog Daxter.

I managed to get through the day sufficiently yesterday.  I go in later today so Bob and I left the house at 7 for a half hour walk.  I need to hop in the shower and get off to school now.  I managed to get two pages of the census transcribed this morning and another two last night.

Today I take my older dog to the vet to see about her skin condition then tomorrow I'm picking my son up, going to yard sales, delivering a lap top to my friend, taking some hostas, vinca and seedum to my daughter and visiting with her for a while.  I decided I just needed a day for myself.  Sunday will be studying for the last pharmacolgy test for this semester.  I'm holding a high B in her class and would like to finish off strong and pull it up to an A.  I have an A in all of my classes but hers!

Hope you have a good day.

Kim

Thanks!  I'm glad you were able to get your degree too.  Better late than never and something to be proud of for sure.

Hey Kim,

I'm glad you spoke with the school about it and I hope they follow through with what they said they'd do.

That's interesting you had to write a Children's Story - yours sounds cute and interesting.

I hope your dog is okay with the skin condition.

I'm glad you are taking a day for you tomorrow - you more than deserve it!  It sounds busy with picking up your son, delivering the laptop, and taking those things to your daughter.  Good luck studying for that last pharmacology test!  I hope you can pull it up to an A like you want to.

I'm doing odds and ends today.  Can't wait for this cold to clear up and go away - it's still awful and now I have a headache with it.

Take care!  Talk to you soon!

Julie  :)

Juanita

Hi Juanita,

Thank you very much for that.  I hate it, too.  I don't even get colds often so when I do it's tough with the asthma.  I hope you are having a nice day and will have a wonderful weekend.  :)

Hope everyone is having a good day.  I almost forgot to get on here today!  Now I can hardly keep my eyes open long enough to say more than a few words.  I don't know why I do this to myself but even on the days I could sleep in I'm up at 3:30 and 4:00 in the morning.  Now here it is 8 at night and I'm ready for bed.

More tomorrow.

I'm 72 years old, currently unemployed and plan to keep it that way. I'm hardly frugal, I love spending money and having fun, so that's why I spend time making money on the computer each day and pump up my fun money fund.

I'm not planning on going back to school, but who knows when I might change my mind? I like to take my wife traveling around North America and we make several trips a year. This year we had a week on a houseboat in Key Largo, a week at the beach, a week in North Carolina and we already have reservations for a week at Yellowstone next summer. That's why I keep clicking.

I also sing in Barbershop Quartets and play a little bluegrass guitar with my boys.

Any divorce plans in your future? ... LOL joking ....

Congratulations, you know how to treat a woman good  :notworthy:

Awww sweetie sorry it was a bad day.  Hope you got some sleep.  I fell to sleep about 9 and didn't get up until almost 5:30.  That's a pretty good night for me.

Have paperwork, laundry and a test to study for today so have to keep hopping.  Only 5 more days of interning with this site.  I'm still waiting to see where they are going to place me next semester.  Anticipation and anxiety of not knowing.

It's cold and rainy tonight here in Central Virginia.  They are having a Nor'easter farther north from here.  I guess we're lucky it's no worse here than that.

Take care, everyone.

Hi Kim,

I'm glad you got a good night's sleep.  Good luck on your test.  Hope everything goes well for you tomorrow.

I would be anxious, too, not knowing where I would be sent next.  Do they try to keep it close by you or the school?  I hope it's something you will enjoy doing.  Sleep tight!  :)

Julie  :)
