 :BangHead:

I rented a room and I forgot to ask before I went to look if they smoked.

She needed the money.

So she said Oh really when I said it bothered me so she said we dont have to smoke in the house.

Well im here a month now and they just light up in front of me.

well now we had a blizzard and they know I cant get out.

They are nice. They clean up the house. They have good floors and no carpet out where they smoke and vinyl washable furniture and rugs area that can be cleaned.

HOwever it really bothers me. My room is carpet. The old second hand smoke smell is so gross.

Its such a nice place why do they want to smoke in the house anyway.

they have dogs, and poor dogs.

but the worse of all is this.

They both have astma. They both cough. Sneeze and the air must be saturated with their throat skin cells.

Should I be able to tell them how it really is. Can they smell at all any more.

:cat:  That's a sad situation.  I'm not really sure what to say, though.  I have asthma/allergies (some of which the drs. attribute to my parents' smoking so much and me in it when I was small through teen years.)  I am allergic now to the smoke and it's a real shame they keep smoking knowing (with the coughing) that they are just making it worse for themselves.

As far as you living there, I would make sure to keep your door closed as much as possible.  Maybe a towel or something to tuck at the bottom of your door would help block the smell a little. If you are able to have your room carpet cleaned, maybe that could help some. You could always lay a large size carpet over that carpet (after having it cleaned.)  If you can stand the cold for a couple of minutes (now and then), you could open the window just to let some fresh air in.  Then there are also candles that can help pull the smell away some.

If you choose to talk to them about it, maybe you could have them talk about their asthma a little, as an opener. You would find out if they are open to discussing the situation with you.  I really hope it works out for you.  It's not always easy finding a nice place to rent. Please keep us posted if you would like to.  :)

I'm sorry to hear that :( I have rented rooms and never asked beforehand either to be honest. If you're able to move I say do it, especially since you voiced your opinion and they have no regards for you. If she really needed the money that badly she'd try to be more courteous

I am not saying 'Yay!' for people who smoke, but you are missing the main point here and it is one you cannot argue with. It is THEIR home and you are THEIR (paying) guest. Why should they have to change how they live just because you decided to move in and you forgot to ask about something that is important to you? I know this sounds harsh, but it is what it is. What if you were allergic to the smell of garlic and they cooked with garlic all the time, which also permeates everything? Do you have the 'right' to ask them to stop cooking with it just for you?
You are entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts.

I was thinking the same thing, it is their house. If you don't like it, you can find somewhere else to live, not trying to sound mean but you really can't ask them to stop, since you are just a renter.

If it was your house and a smoker rented from you, then they couldn't get mad at you for not letting them smoke in the house.

we rent out rooms for our rooming house. we are non smokers, however when somebody moves in they almost always smoke. a few times we've even gotten people that smoke crack and meth. i think its plain rude considering we have children here, i am pregnant and i dont even feel safe walking through the hallways because you never know whose smoking what.

Wow Brianna thats crazy. You should not allow people in that smoke that awful stuff.

These people told me they would not smoke in the house. That is why I gave them the money and at times they do go into their bathroom.

The guy is rude. I am looking for another room. They spent my money soon as I gave it for second time. And then had no money on first so I gave them extra bonus. They went a day of smoking in their bathroom.

I have talked about astma to them. They think its great. They get disability for having asthma.

So folks goes to show you. You can hurt yourself and get disability for hurting yourself.

I think I answered questions except for the rude ones. Smokes need to understand what they do to people. But if they are only educated enough to say its great we get disability. Then they most likely think if they harm you you can get it too.

They are nicer to the young man whom they get to do things for them. They will not smoke when he is home.

They would love to rent to another young person.

I did mop all of their floors for them once and did everyones dishes but when he started getting rude because of the snow storm and having to pay a clean up man, he had used my money. I ended up giving them 345 that month.

Users are different then home owners the actual home owner, the woman is nice.

I do open my window. I use my own heater and block off my room.

the  :cat: and  :cat: :dog:s love me.

I am looking for a room. If I leave this ice packed over snow driveway up hill I wont get back up.

have nice day.

The Key words here, even if you agree with it or not, are this....
"............I forgot to ask before I went to look if they smoked."

...should be first on your list of things to ask about, even if you are helping out a friend! Its not worth it for both of you to be miserable about each others habits....Duhhhhh!!!!1
