Who taught you how to drive?
« on: December 06, 2010, 07:04:24 am »
In my state, kids have to go through a drivers training class.  But, I am of the older generation.  I can remember when I was little, my dad used to put me in front of him in the drivers seat and I would steer.  He then taught me how to drive on the roads around our cabin.  By the time I got my permit, I was a pretty good driver.  My mother kept a license, but didn't drive until after my dad died.  With my permit, I would then take her to the grocery store, etc.  It gave my dad a break.  I lived in a few different states and had to take the test all over again when we moved.

I learned how to drive almost all on my own. We lived on a farm and I would drive the truck, tractor,ect.. around the farm to deliver things and to complete different daily chores. Then when I was of age to get my permit i would drive with my dad on the main roads to "get the feel for real traffic" he would always say. By the time I was able to get my license I was pretty good at all the different traffic reqiurments I passed the very first time.

One of my 7th grade friends, Jim Watson (who went on to become an all-star stock car driver) taught me stick when we took my dad's car(he was out of town.  I learned how to drive automatic by the time I was 12 by watching my parents.

I learned from an instructor. He picked me up on a few different days and using his car, he had me drive on the roads. On the final day, I had to wake up early. He picked me up, had me practice, and then I went to do the test. I passed, obtained my license, and he dropped me off at my home.

Before this one, I business I went to wasn't very good and didn't notice at the time. They had me practice just by driving around a parking lot area on three different days, and then I was suppose to take the driving test. I failed it twice here.

Technically, I was supposed to learn in Drivers Ed in High school. However, my family is a bunch of ranchers and live out in the boondocks. My dad taught me how to drive. We'd drive on backroads while I sat in his lap. I was probably 5 years old. I could drive by myself when I was big enough to reach the pedals. Then, my step-dad was a racecar driver and he taught me how to maintain control while hydroplaning. Needless to say my drivers ed teacher was shocked and a little scared that I could drive as well as I could.

I went driving a couple of times with my dad and learned the basics from him. Then when I was 16 I had to go to driver's ed. I hated driver's ed, my instructor made me even more nervous.

I had to go through a class and at the end you take a test. If you passed you then have to go through 6 hours of driving with an instructor when you turn 16. After you complete the 6 hours you get your permit. That's how i learned.  8)

When I was in High School I took Drivers Ed, so the Driver Instructor taught me at the age of 15.5.  We always had a lot of fun.  In my home state you had to be 16, so my Dad signed the papers for me to get my license.
