The Return of the Woolly Mammoth?
« on: January 20, 2011, 04:42:38 pm »
It has been 10,000 years since prehistoric elephants roamed the earth. Now an audacious band of scientists hopes to recreate a living, breathing woolly mammoth.

Probably not.  Most genetic experiments going on now aren't such great ideas.  Cloning isn't necessarily a bad thing, mapping the human genome isn't bad.  But some of the gene splicing going on seems to be bad idea (ie, combining jellyfish DNA with monkeys and lab mice as has been done).

I'm going to be starting the last year for my BS in Biology in June, and I think this is a horrible idea.  It's one thing to use gene splicing to help combat disease or genetic disorders caused by mutation; I'd even agree with using it to attempt to bring back species that humans have driven to extinction...but a species that died off mostly due to temperature/ecosystem changes (even though early humans may have sped things up a bit) should not be brought back.  I think that's abusing nature.

I think that this is such a crazy idea. Are scientist running out of things to do? Why don't they work on something that humankind can benefit from! What purpose would bringing back the woolly mammoth to a world that is over-populated. Besides, there are reasons for certain animals not to be in exitance. I believe that they are just trying to toot their own horn. There are so many animals that need help now just to survive that are still living. They need to work on the problems at hand and not ressurect an animal that has been gone for thousands of years.
