Thoughts about TV shows and Racism...
« on: February 24, 2011, 01:44:49 pm »
There are plenty of shows out there that show racism in some respect but not as many that might occasionally show racism but it is always in a really harsh this is not the way things should be light.

There are plenty of comedy shows that make off color comments that can be funny but racism is never really shown in a bad light but more as something to laugh at.

Crime shows show how racism is bad and people that view the world in this way are bad people but there is always the underlying current that this is the way things are and that it will never change.

Then you have the Sci-fi shows (mainly the different Star Trek series coming to mind here) that will come right out and say that this is not an acceptable way to behave....not even the we are all human but more we are all sentient life and are equal etc. But in it's own way it still promotes stereotypes (there are exceptions of course but the main stereotypes are there) examples: A Ferengi (spelling will probably be atrocious here sorry Trekkies) will try to sell you salt as some rare mineral and are always trying to cheat you. A Vulcan must be serious and logical at all times. etc etc. Although on the other side a view of embracing these "stereotypical" differences as everyone has something to bring to the table.

I have noticed that "preschool" cartoons will try to be as "non-racist" as possible by the characters all looking different and having different skin tones etc. (This person is yellow with purple hair while this person is peachy pink with green hair.....) But it seems like as the cartoons get "older" the characters begin to all look the same.

So to make this more debatable (besides people just coming out and telling me that I'm wrong LOL)

Do you think that we as a society make an attempt to create a non-racist society but then just allow everything to fall into old habits??

And if you have children do you as a parent try to watch and try to have your children watch shows that promote acceptance and celebration of differences?
