Comed $355!!!

I think my meter is seriously broke. I got a bill this month for $355! 
I live in an apartment and I have asked many people about their bill. At the most people I know in houses are paying half of what they are charging me. Has anyone else had unusual rates?

the same thing is happening in my daughters apt.  They said when she moved in that the bill never got over 90, It was 190 in the first 15 days.  I spoke with a girl at the electric company, she tried to tell me that it was an electric heater causing that much pull.  (Think not)  It's a new heater and she only used it a few days.  My daughter isn't even in her apt. that much.  So they suggested turning off the breakers and then turning them on 1 at time to see whats pulling so much juice.  I think that there is something that her apt is connected to another apt and she is paying for that.  Like the hot water heater or something.  Check the your hot water heaters bottom element it might need to be replaced.

There was a time when I was in an apartment where one of the neighbors would host parties in the basement, and setup exercise equipment - and plugged them all into the outlets in the basement that were attached to my apartment - so I ended up paying their bill.

May want to check the basement to see if there are any outlets down there with your number on it, and see if anything is plugged into them.

I hope you figure out where the energy sink is.

If the apt is wired wrong then you could see the bill go sky high. It may help turning off the breakers on the rooms you aren`t using. Is this apt own by a person or a company, maybe even go to them and tell them about your bill. maybe they will give you some kind of insight.

i agree with everyone else so far, it has to be an electrical mistake, most likely wiring.... you should ask for free months rent for the hassle

My bills are always high...i seem to always have to make phone calls for something that is screwed up on my bills!!

Ours use to until we bought a couople of units that cools our house that runs on water and ice.  Paid under $100.00 for them I now have 3 of them and I love them.  They burn only 4 watts to run them and keeps you very cool.  We are saving over $150 on our electric bill.  Last year our bigest bill was 174.00 that was the first months bill before starting to use these portal air coolers.  We have also changed all the bulbs in our house to those squiggly ones that are lower watts as well.  We unplug anything that is not being used and turn off lights that don't need to be own.  But these portable air coolers also know as swamp coolers are like hitting gold.  All total I have bought 5 units 3 mine 2 for others.

Wow!  That is crazy.  Mine is $180 for a house and I think that is ridiculous.  Something must be wrong.

I've heard that sometimes Pot growers tap into other peoples lines to run their lights and such. I imagine it would be fairly easy to do in an apartment building.

I don't know about Com Ed, but this happened to me with TXU and the bill was higher than my rent when we lived in an apartment. The told me I was in a hot zone, and we had vaulted ceilings. I didn't believe it, I looked at my meter and it was spinning faster than everyone else, turned everything off and it still shinned at the same fast speed. We moved.

For an apartment, that seems completely outrageous.  If I got that bill for my 1100 square foot house in the winter, I'd crap a brick.

You definitely need to have someone come out from the utility to take a look at things.  While it may not be an illegal hook-up, this is becoming more and more a problem nationwide.
