I don't eat oatmeal but I would think anything you cook yourself is going to be healthier.... especially if you eat the heartier steelcut oats.  I wish I liked them because they are great for you but I can't get past the smell and the texture of hot cereal.

Does anybody like steelcut oats?  We tried them once and they were really nasty.  If that's what it takes to be healthy, count me out!  I do agree that the regular oatmeal that you cook yourself is probably better for you and actually, pretty good in general.

:dontknow: I'm not sure...but I think the regular may be healthier cause it's not processed like the instant oatmeal.

hmmm, not sure. I will have to look into this one more closely, but I do use the instant more frequently. Just so easy to pop into the microwave and eat! :dontknow:

I had the instant this morning.  I add some dry milk powder to the oatmeal before I nuke it- makes it creamier and gives me some milk, which we should all drink.  This morning I added a handful of blueberries after it had cooked.  The blueberries went in cold, but came out hot.

The instant oats that have flavors added are less healthy because they tend to have extra sugar.  But as far as soluble fiber and complex carbs and such, I think both types would be pretty equivalent - assuming you're talking about Quaker-type oats and not fancy steelcut.

By the way, what IS the deal with steelcut oats?  What makes them different than regular Quaker oats - both processing-wise and nutrition-wise?

instant oatmeal may also be higher in sodium.... however if you choose either type of oatmeal over many other breakfast options you will be better off than if you had no oatmeal at all!

I always prefer regular old-fashion rolled oats.

I think both are good and healthy to eat; sometimes I only eat the instant oatmeal for a quick breakfast.

I always eat regular. I think the oats are thicker then in instant.

Im guessing regular because usually there are more instants with sugar and additives unless of course you purchase sugar free. With regular you can add your own ingredients to make it as healthy as you like.
