I'm a american indian myself and I would like to see America give our people's land back. Its not right what they did to our people. I'm sure we won't get anything back. We will most likely be dead before we get anything back.

You were weak and you lost it.  Quit whining.  Instead of crying about it, put your efforts into trying to make the lives of Native Americans better in the US.  Native American rates of poverty and alcoholism are far higher than the national average.  The US government gives Native Americans free money and tax exempt status... advantages that the rest of us do not have.

You are wrong.  Not all american Indians get grants and free money.  Matter of fact sme of us are not recognzied as Indians because of the assimilation process of the past.  Some of our records were destoyed so we have no way of proving who we are to the government.  Therefore myself and others cannot get "free money".  I get no tax exemptions.  I was given a hideous last name and was subjected to slavery by racist radical parents who wanted me to be white as a child.  So before you speak like that on my people you better learn the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

What land specifically are you referring to? The U.S. bought most of the land from France. Other lands were traded for beads and other goods. Also the "Indians" were not just one group but several tribes where there were already disputes as to who controlled what areas.

I am part Choctaw and honestly don't know how you expect anything to be "given back" at this point. It is a little late in the game for that. It is just as bad as the mexicans thinking they are owed something. And I for one am sick to death of the coddling they are getting from the government.

You can get a DNA test for proof.  It happens all the time.  Then you can go get your government moneycheck.

Well sure! As long as both peoples treat eachother with respect and prescribe to the same basic laws. I hear horror stories of americans going through indian reservations and being terrorized by the natives, but at the same time Walksalone is always posting detailed stories here on FC of present-horrendous actions against natives (usually by the gov't), so there's obviously major problems and misunderstandings on both sides.

But what land are you referring to? All of the land? Because...yeah...there might be a big problem with that.

Slavery? What happened? I'd like to hear your story if you're willing to tell.

Its hard for me to say which land because I wasn't born at the time when our land was being taken away. I believe its most likely the land that they used to build railroads. Of course, there is multiple tribes out there and I'm a Cherokee. I can't prove it since I have a family member who refuse to give me and other family members access to the info needed to prove our self.

There is a difference between sitting back and half-heartedly starting a thread about how the US should give NDN's the land back and actually getting up and doing some good.  Take a look at what is going on in the rez's, participate in the Longest Walk, take a look at your history.  Its rich and beautiful.  I have NDN blood in my genetics, but I don't claim to be NDN or to be owed anything from the government, other than equal treatment.  I'm a privileged white chick who is trying to research and learn something about history.  I urge you to do the same.

No a dna test will not make the government recognize me as a american indian.  There has to be written records from the past from my family with the race identified as American Indian.

How does one give back that which no one can actually own? Amy is right people who want to be NDN just for what they may or may not recieve from it are embarrassing to me and my Relations. There are ways to prove whether or not one has legit, NDN heritage. I have directed Amy to this information in the past because I felt her heart was good and she came in a good way with the request. I may or may not present the info again, however if I do it will be as a result of something I have yet to see here. Not knowing what "The Longest Walk" is is further evidence supporting my opinion that while you claim you are NDN, more likely you are simply American. There is a huge difference.
